Thread: DE forum 'Leaders'
1) The guys on this forum who seem, to me, to be the most knowledgeable and senior all seem to have a problem with posting regarding frequent questions. Well may I just say this; people who want to learn their skill come here to read about it, i have read that engineering 101 thing, and to be honest didn't find it totally helpfull, mainly confusing and alot of skimming and searching for the adviceI required. As you can imagine this is very time consuming. So it brings me to my point. People who come on here not to read pages and pages of text, but for help....will just post a thread to get their question answered....and this doesn't help your profession grow if you get touchy when someone posts a FAQ and you moan about answering them.
You could make the stickie easier to search, or easier on the eye so people would sit there and read it, or you could just persevere with them and answer them, there are new people joining all the time and they are not going to want to rumage through endless archives of old posts just to get a simple question answered. Im not trying to sound like im ranting for no reason, but if youare as friendly etc as you say you are, you would have no problem helping these people out.
Forums are meant to be used guys, not used as a reference point.....would you just want a FAQ post? that people just read and left again? no of course not, you want to discuss and aid your fellow DE's.....this can be done by a simple reply on a post. Please dont cuss people for asking simple questions, we all do it, just answer thats all it takes.
Flames are (unfortunatly) a part of forums such as this. Best you can do is pose your question and try to be as objective as you can with the responses you get.
If *I* won the lottery, this would not be the place I would be hanging out, lol.
As to the thread author, hopefully you are getting a better picture each day you play of how complex this system is. You are right, to read up on enough guides to fully explain the profession would take hours of reading and re-reading, and in-game tests of stuff you just read. My advice would be to print out the Guides, and refer to them when you get stumped on a single thing. Dont expect to read a Guide, and then know all there is to know (or even half) about Droid Engineer.
A bit of advice.... dont spent too much time reading up on DE. Spend as much time as you can reading up on the resources DE use, and then tracking them down to buy or harvest yourself. You can know everything about DE, but not have the resources, and be SOL. After you have that going, then you can spend more time learning...preferably as you craft.
Be warned though, that the DE market is kinda slow. Dont expect to become a millionaire any time soon. But it IS the coolest crafting profession out there!!
Besides, if you think it's bad now, you should have been here in the old days....
I know that as you have been here for a long time you see these threads with FAQs, that can easily be solved by; looking for 5 or so minutes; reading the thread that has a particular FAQ in it; or by working it out yourself.
I also appreciate as you are all human, bad moods etc. do account for your hostlility towards to particular lazy people who want thier work doing for them. And I acknowledge that you du enjoy helping but patiencewears thin when it is obvious people are just lazy and want SWG spoon fed to them, with no work at all.
Another point I would like to make is I am not going to be a DE for the money, but becuase I like the fact I could be living in a fictional online Star Wars Universe, as myself...and I could be sat in my house tinkering with droids. It just captures my imagination some what.
Also I know that the guides take alot of time to produce, they are very helpful indeed, but as it is on a forum, with internet explorer....the pages and reems and reems of text are not all too easy to navigate.
I thank you all for all your imput. Thanks alot, and all you guys here seem very friendly and I would like to (if possible) form a friendship with you, as I'm sure your wisdom and expertise would come very much in handy and help me out alot.
I'm not a master artisan yet, I'm still very....and i hate to use this word as on other games i play i rule them.....but n00bish. I would very much like to get into a group or some kind of master that could guide and helpme while I'm ingame. As this game does has alot to it, and it quite complicated, I need guidence. I want to become a DE, but there is also other things I am excited by so it will take me longer to reach my personal goals if I have no-one to guide me along. Being an artisan is hard, with knowing which resources to get etc. and I need some help as to know which is the best way to advance so I can begin to DE.
Thnaks alot guys, your community here on DE forums is great.
Ocko,
For what it's worth, I made the exact same comment that you made a month or so back. Namely that if people want to use the canned "RTFM" response to questions, they really need a better manual with which to refer people. DE 101 has a lot of info, but it's outdated, poorly organized, and is not useful as a way to lookup answers to questions(it's notorganized inthat way). That's not a knock at it's author(s), these things take a lot of work to write and writing such a thing is a great benefit to noobs like us, but honestly, it's just not a good enough as a reference to merit the "RTFM" response.
