Thread: Droid use and the common man: a solution to the foreseen overuse of combat droids
Droids should be usable by everyone, regardless of skills. Certifications should not be required, as anyone who can communicate with a droid should be able to order it around. However, droids should consume power every time they are called from the datapad. If you don't have the power, you should be unable to call a droid. An advanced combat droid might consume 1000 units of power whenever it is called and 100 units of power every minute it is out, while an R2 unitmight consume only 10 units of power whenever it is called and 1 unit of power every minute it is out.
This power consumption will ensure that droids are not free to use, and that newbies will be unable to maintain them, and thus put them to any good use. It is also highly realistic while enforcing the fact that advanced combat droids are not usually constantly seen everywhere. They are expensive to maintain. Best of all, this method is entirely organic and does not implement any artificial restrictions.

I like this idea MUCH better than certifications, because I am absolutley 100% against droid certifications.
But instead of making it power, maybe they require more Droid Batteries to recharge? Maybe 2, or maybe even higher depending on the level of the droid.
Droid Batteries aren't expensive to make or anything, but if you don't have a steady supply, your droid can drain power fast and not usable anymore, and it's more realistic, in my view, that a droid might use more Droid Batteries depending on it's size, and capabilities (Like a CD boombox takes more Duracell batteries than a Sony Discman, for example).
Maybe there can be different types of Droid Batteries that a Droid Engineer can make, more heavy duty ones. We can have regular ones for crafting stations, or med droids or something, that don't do much, but maybe the inherhent function droids (or what I think they should be, ie. Surgical droids healing players and pets, repair droids repairing droids, weapons, and armor, Protocol droids being mini vendors, Binary Load Lifters being whatever they might be, and combat droids of course) could require a higher level battery that needs to be made, that provides more power for that droid, but also requires multiples to be used, and could cost more resources, hence upping how easy they are to make, as well as the cost to sell them, making it a bit not so easy to just command the strongest combat droid ever made.
When I think about it like that, with droid batteries, and advanced droid batteries, I like your idea a lot more. I don't think it neccesarily needs harvested power, just as much as some advanced droid batteries that are a little more complicated and expensive to make.
Batteries are no good unless you charge them with power. I'd prefer we make batteries into a storage device. Different sizes of batteries can hold a different amount of power. A larger battery would be more convenient as a) you would have to fill your droid up less often, and b) the more powerful droids consume power at a vastly increased rate.

no thanks....im not sure but this 2nd topic ive seen (one from commando board) where people want to make it cost more to maintain the profession not everyone is made out of money watch the SW films you didn't see a droideka just run outa power in 5minutes (which would be 5000 units of power) thats too much money especially just simple artisans who have to manage ther harvesters, factories etc and want some protection have to worry about there droids as well just to call them out? mine as well just give pets a hunger meter and have to feed them every time you call them and everytime there out
no thanks but i see where your coming from
Actually, 5000 units of power would last for 50 minutes under the sample numbers I gave above, not just 5. I see nothign wrong with this. A Droideka is extremely powerful and should require an extreme amount of maintenance. If you want something just for protection, bring along a standard battle droid instead. A Droideka is powerful enough to keep a Jedi at bay.

I still think advanced droid batteries, screw using power. I can't afford to have extra wind harvestors to split my power up between my resource harvestors and some droids.
I just think we should have to make advanced droid batteries that actually take a good amount of resources to make, and the really powerful droids (like a Droideka) should take multiple advanced droid batteries to charge it.
But other than that, you're the man Raystonn. You have the idea laid out perfectly. Droid certifications is unacceptable in my opinion. An idea like what you laid out needs to be implemented. I just think it should be advanced droid batteries.
"Can we say... Power Droids?"
But when a person can only have 1 droid out at a time, this would require you to be grouped with someone who has a power droid that can have it constantly power your droid while you are out hunting.
Now, I do think that power droids should be able to do that. But your point actually only betters the idea, because it shows that SoE wanted all along: Player interaction.

Maybe we can finally use the POWER DROID for something?
Whats to prevent starting characters from getting some Super Advanced Droideka of Oblivion? The exact same problems will continue as did from the Pre-Nerf Probot days and now with the Cowardly Gurrek... This method doesnt make much difference. If you can get this Droid of Death right off the start, then you can probably get 100 000 units of Droid Power to run it.
Why have the ability tocraft anything else other than this Droid of Death also? There wont be a market for anything else.

If you have access to 100,000 units of power and a top of the line combat droid, you are not a newbie. The street value for 100,000 units of most any resource is about 500,000 credits. Newbies start with 250 credits.

Example: Im a Master Bounty Hunter whos bored of the game and 5 Trillion dollars. My friend chooses to join... He's not a Newbie but, a Novice cause hes starting a WHOLE NEW CHARACTER. I choose to give him the Droid of Oblivion and 100 000 units of Droid Power. Wow, sound familiar? Hmmm Pre-Nerf Probot? No? Same problem, different pile. Well, I can't say more about that.
