Thread: Who Wants To Play A Droid Engineer Who Can't Use All His/Her Droids?

That's what it comes down to for me, folks. I can appreciate the "pure crafter" camp's perspective and preferences for playing the kind of DEs they want to play. But for me the ultimate question comes down to whether we, as droid engineers, will be able to use all the droids we make. Personally, if I can't use all the combat droids I can make I am gonna be pretty ticked off.

I'm NOT talking here about BH droids. Nor am I speaking of medical droids. I think any droid that requires specialized skills such as medic or BH skills (or, hopefully, in the future slicing and other skills) should only be useable by those DEs that have the correct skills. However, the natural implication in my mind of the pure crafter camp's desires is that some non-skill based droids -- combat droids -- would be off limits to the very people who create and know those droids best: droid engineers.

I can appreciate the need for balance. I myself am a proponent of droid certs for other professions. But I think in the end, all DEs should be able to use all the droids they make that are not skill-based droids.

Can I please get a show of hands of how many droid engineers would like to play a droid engineer that cannot use all the droids he or she can make (not including skill-based droids like BH or medical droids)?

If any in the pure crafter camp think I am mischaracterizing their perspecitive, pls correct me here. But please explain under which scenerios you think droid engineers should not be able to use the droids they make, not including skill-based droids.

I have no problem with the idea of a Droid Engineer not being able to use their own droid, it is just another facet of the game. Its not because I want to hold everyone else back. Its not because I want to see CH's fail, its because I want to see a good balance and a diverse game. As it is the precedent has been set that crafters do not get combat bonuses when using their crafted items. By taking a crafting profession and adding that to it (as well as adding more to the crafting side of the profession, which is what I wish they would do) creates a hybrid combat/crafting profession. Fine, thats been done before, except if your going to have a hybrid profession you'd better include some tactical skills (ranged support 4) in the requirements for DE. As soon as you've got a full fledged crafting profession with combat benefits you get a mad rush for everyone to become droid engineers. Don't kid yourself by saying they'll be discouraged by the grind, it can be done in a short amount of time, all it takes is money (which can be obtained easily enough). Now, the devs aren't stupid. They see everyone and their brother becoming a droid engineer do to the most efficient use of skill points for the most benefit. In order to restore some diversity to the game, they "rebalance" the DE profession. This ends in one of two things. Either they take away the combat benefits they gave us to start with (which means we wasted the months it takes for this process to happen) or they take away from some of the crafting aspects of the profession (Which is the opposite of what needs to be done in my opinion). Call it far fetched if you'd like, but its happened before and it will happen again.

This is getting rather tiring. Why do you have to keep bringing the same topic up over and over again? Do you like the sound of your own voice or something?

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I appreciated Drashk's recent poll on combat droids. However, I felt that one thing missing from that discussion was the implication of going with pure crafter. I think its very easy to say DE=pure crafter, but what if DE=pure crafter also equals DE who can't use their own droids? Not sure this was considered since "pure crafter", "combat DE" and even "hybrid DE" were no defined. And given that we had a recent poll on combat droids, I felt it was ripe for discussion. Do you disagree?

How do you feel about it, Sox? Are you ok with some dood with a flamethrower commanding the droids that you build, when you cannot do so yourself?

Sodan,

This is, in a way, the same discussion I've tried to have with Kollos.

I agree that we should be able to use EVERY non-skill-requirement droid that we make. Every one.

It only makes sense.

Whoever gave me the one star, thats your opinion, but at least post some feedback. If you think my ideas are crap, tell me why.

Funny Blue, I didn't see you say the same thing in the other threads, are you selective on who or what viewpoint you want to silence?

Frankly after 6 months, I'm sick to death of this discussion, "debate class" sucks the freaking life out of this game. I'm tired of the ppl in the jar arguing Incessantly over the same things, but I guess since we get Crap for timely responses from the Devs who introduced this broken profession into a live Beta, that's all that is left to do while waiting... argue some more.

Sodan,

It is this very question that a Dev should address (here in the forum) and the 'strike team's' justification for whatever opinion they take.

Maybe this would be better posed as a poll (by Drashk?)...

I think you very tidily summed up the issue in question with regard to droid certs and logical usage of crafted items. While the question is simple, the ultimate answer (I'm sure) will be far more complex, unfortunately.

If someone does go and start a poll, I would say the question presented here is a bit biased, something more neutral such as "Do you think DE's should be able to use all non-skill dependent droids" would be good.

I would add that we should define "non-skill dependent droids" so people know what we mean. I'm all for accurate fact gathering. And while I think the previous poll was very helpful in that regard, this is a "sub-issue" that also stands to be polled.

I think its ripe for discussion because there are up-coming DE changes and plenty of new DEs, but I also agree with Rialia and to some degree Sox that these issues have been thoroughly picked over.

I firmly believe, and suspect that many DEs agree with me, that DEs should be able to use all non-skill dependent droids that we can make. It would be really demoralizing to wait all this time merely to be able to sell and not use my beloved droideka.

My only concern for this question would be what constitues a non-skill ? (I do think this sounds a bit pedantic but .....)

Weaponsmiths cant use all thier weapons without getting the certs for them from other trees I think , to be fair to them droid engineer would have to become more of a hybrid class if they could use all their droids without gaining certs or skills from other classes. To balance things up we would have to stay with about the same earning power from our DE plus the cert for the DE usable droids

None of our oppinions matter here. You people still dont get it do you? This whole forum is nothing but fluff. The same regurgitated topics for near 7 months now and still no results. Our oppinions and Ideas here have ZERO effect on the game its all nothing but talk of DE day-dreams and fantasies. SOE has proven, for 7 months now, that they are going to do what they want to do with this profession reguardless of what any of us think.

This Profession has been fed so much meaningless jibborish by SOE, that the DE players have nothing else to do but start in at eachothers throats. Its been pathetic and nothing has changed.

carry on....
