I do the same thing as happymob. My vendor is on Dant and I have a standing buy of any Dant herb for 10 cpu for some of my regular hunters. At 10 cpu you can still make money making stims that are margin higher than a vegie stim. For example, if your vegie stim comes out 40/400 your stim using average herb will come out 40/420ish. The extra 20 or so in power may allow you to sell the stim for a bit more.
If the stats are good, of course, I pay more.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the hard cap for PE in herb meat is 700. You can't have herb meat with a PE higher than that.
