I'm working my way to have resources to make my own good buff packs. Sell a few, buff my alt. that kind of thing.
while working on merhcant..i discovered something that i think is going to occupy me for a long time.
I recently had to start my alt from scratch.. and it was tedious..if it wasnt for themoney i was able to tip from my main, it'd have been a HUGE bore to do.. so i got to thinking..
i set up shop outsid emos eisly.. i have my alt advertising at the star port.. and i am making and selling low level items. I buy ALL resources in lots of 100 for 2 CPU. all those new characters now have something to do with all the resources they hand gather.. i dont care what the stats are..its 2 CPU. I then craft those same reosurces into stims.. armor.. weopons.. mining deeds.. clothes.. etc etc.. all the things those new chars need.. and sell it back to them cheaply. Its not costing me much money..its making NOTHING.. but its a great amount of satisfaction in helping new people.. i'm loving it..
While i'm doing this i'm stock piling my resources to make stims and buffs for the wealthy elite aswell.. i'll lead a double life.. selling buffs at 30K to the rich and wealthy to pay for me crafting cheap items for the new and poor.
I'ma regular Robin 'ood I am !

its the rare people like you that made me bother continuing past my 14 day trial (ie the helping out newbies with cash part)
Now i have millions myself but it all came VERY quickly after i was able to do cash missions on dant, i remember spending several weeks to even be able to afford a bike, wish i had met someone like you back then, hehe

First I agree with you as to this is what a doc should be like. However that doesn't mean everyone else thinks that same way. To some, just healing people seems useless. Yes you can still do combat, but probably not some of the PvP templates.
Posts on the forums are about buffing and prices because soemthing like this really doesn't need to be explained. If someone wants to take 2+ months being a doc, they already have convinced themselves that they want to figure it out for themselves(or at least look for the answers themselves).
After hologrinding started, people realized that professions could be done in a few days. You no longer had to work for weeks to grind a profession to start getting the benefits from that profession. One of the benefits for docs is the credits from buffing.
Many people will always look for the easiest way to obtain wealth. This makes the game fun to them. These nothing wrong with this at all. A goal can easily be to get 10 million credits and then drop the profession and do something else. That person will probably never have to worry about credits again. Other people want to spend their 2 hours doing different stuff each day. Some days they might need to run missions to be able to buy a new weapon. Some days they can do whatever they want to.
I would agree with those above that said those buffing outside starports are not the majority of doctors. 95% of the doctors that I know don't do this.

I think the thiing to remember is that there are several ways to play a character. There are tanks, ranged experts and so on. Doctors fall into this as well. I became a doc because our guild needed one, but then I wanted to craft. Well after crafting some decent buffs, I wanted to use them. I have an alt so I figured to get him started it would be nice to have the cash to buy some armor and weapons. Now that my alt is self sustaining, I am crafting other things like disease states and fire suppression blankies.
So I guess what I am saying, there are alot of ways to play it, which way works for you is ultimately up to you.
Have fun with it!
