Thread: Attention All Doctors who don't believe we should charge for our services: Discussion Within

From my own point of view:

Within Combat:

(As stated by others) Each member of a combat group should be expected to contribute towards the group's success in a manner appropriate for the situation, without any expectation of payment from other group members for their services ( unless agreed to beforehand ).

As a result, I frequently provide buffs to my party before entering combat, heals during combat, and possibly /revives as needed after combat, without thought of compensation. The XP / mission rewards should be sufficient for my services, much as the Rifleman receives no extra rewards for dealing out the most damage, etc.

However, I still have full liberty of deciding how my contributions can best effect success. As a result, I don't re-buff during combat, heal wounds on seriously Battle-Fatigued members, or /revive in the middle of a protracted battle unless there is no alternative. Just like I expect the party Riflewoman to choose actions that she believes benefits the interests of the group (and herself), she also should expect that I will act in the manner that I believe best benefits the interests of the group (and myself). As a result, I gladly listen to requests, not demands, for assistance.

Outside of Combat:

I see no obligation to provide services -- for a fee, or otherwise -- to other players while I'm "off the clock" ( not adventuring ). It is my normal habit to cure wounds and provide buffs to local adventurers on a free ( tip only ) basis, but it's due to my own generous nature, not from any obligation. Occasionally I still try to stop by and spend a few minutes at the medical centers, in the faint hope of providing simple Civil Service to the community.

If other doctors feel it is appropriate to charge for their services ( particularly in cases where they have to do extended travel or encounter personal risk ), then I applaud them for their industriousness and diligence. I just have had good experiences with a tip-only basis at this point, and don't see the accumulation of wealth as something I'm very interested in doing at this time.
