play smart, use your ranged support skills and poisons, and you're actually quite viable as a MD/MCM

hehe not a bad choice

but...another option would be CH 1-1-0-0 so you can handle a grand wrix and some carbine/pistol skill

Any melee really. I enjoy one-hand sword so far. You buff yourself and go go go. I'm not even up to fencer yet, and I can take out red peko-peko's reliably.

Currently I am working my way back to Master Doctor, after dropping all skills to try some other professions.

For backing up a Doctor in combat I find TKA to work really well. I am currently a TKM.

This allows me to run to the front lines, and due to the melee defence, unarmed toughness and ranged defences, mean I take less damage when getting hit. And can use meditate to heal my wounds if they get to bad in a matter of minutes, without having to find somewhere to camp or find the med droid that got lost.

Usually my tactic to heal and incapped player is to run up to the mob and hit it so I gain agro (this usually stops them DB the incapped player), I then hit the mob with debuffs, and knock them down, then I usually get the player back on their feet and finish the mob off.

So far it has worked really well, then again I have not really tried ranged weapons in the same situation. But so have I have not needed buffs or armour or pets myself and have survived a long time this way.But really only tested this out in Fort Tusken so far.

I'm torn between two schools of thought.

Go melee and heal pets/people in the middle of combat or go rifle and sit back to clean up the carnage.

Since my comp can't handle city based PvP the choice is easy, Rifle. When cruising around in raid groups I'll heal pets after combat is overor drag incapped peeps at 30m for a quick stim otherwise I sit in the background spaming specials.

I used to be a master fencer/master doc. But i found that fencing special, with buffs applied, use alot of mind. So much i was didnt have enough mind left to be a effective healer. I find carbineer to be a little better less mind cost.
