Free buffs are great, they are free. But here is one situation that has happened to me in the past where it is a real problem. I just found out that my allie's base was under attack and I gathered a crew of several people together to rush to their aid. We went overt at AH and shuttled in to Bestine where there was minimal resistance so we then flew to Talus where the raid was at. Our guild doc was waiting for us atthe starportto buff us with his janta packs to allow for us to have our edge against the supposed AT-ST's at the raid.
Well what do you know? The shuttle is about to leave and I have to grab a ticket to fly out and I ask the doc to come with us and buff us on talus. He then informs me that he can't buff me and yet my ham shows that I am unbuffed. 1300 health and action...w-t-f? A newb doc ninja buffed myself and my crew as we loaded in to gain his much needed xp, he didn't know any better since he was new and I talked to him later. But now my friends are losing turrets and a base is about to be blown and I have to have all of my crew get DB'ed and rebuffed.....ohh...but wait.......now some of the guys are covert because they cloned instead of getting a rez. So now I have several peeps asking me if it is ok to be a gtef player. Several people didn't want to wait on the DB/rez/rebuff so they took off ahead of the group. I opted for the DB/rez/rebuff and showed up with several of my guildies and low and behold we were too late.
This is one of the main reasons as to why ninja buffers are not welcomed. At least ask for concent to see if the person wants a buff. Would you like it if you just spent millions on the latest and greatest weapon and some newb walked up and sliced it for 1% speed? (if the game worked that way of course) I would not be too happy if a smuggler could just ninja slice my currently held weapon in my hands and give me a crappy slice on a multi million credit gun just so that he/she can gain xp. Just ask the people first, ask me and I will always say yes if I am not trying to get janta/high end buffs in the meantime. What if an image designer rearranged your face while you shuttle loaded in?........now I have your attention...hehehehe...or an SWG IRS tax auditer readjusted your bank account and took what he thought was his without even asking.....
Buffing != slicing or image design, so don't make that comparison. Buffing is temporary and 99% of the time it's useful(the other 1% being tumblers or unbuffed duelers).
Are you aware that you can overwrite alower buff with a higher buff? Maybe your story is from before that fix was put in.
The guy who was stealth buffed and said "please don't do that again" was being perfectly civil, and the stealth buffer should have said, "okay, sorry about that."
I don't see anything wrong with ninja buffing, but I can see how it would bother others.
Perhaps a better solution would be to go to the new player city on Tatooine (Mos Eisley?) and buff all the newbs for XP. They don't have money to pay, and could use any crappy buff you give them, although they may not understand what you're doing. Maybe if you do this you should type up and hot key a macro that spits out an explanation of what you are doing.

As others have said, the image design comparison is a very poor one since ID is permanent, buffs are not.

I actually think that the ID comparison is a great one. In simple terms (ignore the duration) both affect your character - and therefore should not be done without your consent.
Try another view on this, imagine your character is someone who refuses buffs on the grounds of religous beliefs - from a RPing perspective you would be violating a character's beliefs...
Or perhaps a real life paradigm - if Doctors went round providing drugs and medicine to any person they would soon be struck off the Doctor's list...
Whilst a buff may not seem like a big deal, it's not that which is the problem - it's the act of affecting another character without their consent. That's the real issue here. And in that case that's why I say ninja-buffing is bad.
It's also the reason why I don't heal wounds without being asked - for all I know that person may want to keep the wounds for some reason or other.
