Thread: My Definition of a Doctor

Well said!
We are NOT buff bots.
I find that more and more players are choosing Doctor as their profession, be it their primary choice or a secondary skill. But how many people really know about all the aspects of the Doctor profession? There is more to our skill set then just the /healenhance, and I hope that many of you that are against the upcoming CU changes that affect our profession take that into consideration.
And I have just as much to lose "financially" in this game as anyone else. But you know what? Losing some fake money in exchange for gaining a role in groups and combat again will make it all worthwhile.
And the doctors are not the only ones affected. For example, Blair mentioned:
All weapons will do a base damage of type of two possible types: "Kinetic" or "Energy". Several weapons will do additional elemental damage of one of the following types: "Heat", "Cold", "Acid", "Electrical".
Which means that some damage types are gone - no more stun, for example. This will effect the armorsmiths who have huge stocks of stun-layers for armor, players with stun resist armor and PSGs, weaponsmiths who craft stun weapons, etc. etc. etc. One change like that trickles down and affects many non-combat professions.
I still think it's way too soon to be throwing up our hands in disgust and giving up. Good or bad, we don't know the details on any specific changes yet, just some generic overviews of the system changes.

What is a Doctor? A Doc in SWG is the ultimate in support. We heal, we cure, we enhance our group. Our functions in healing and curing have been secondary as time has gone on, but we can't just ignore our primary function in this game.

It is great that you have made your def and that you apply it to yourself.
My def of a doc is anyone who has the skills and chooses to use them any darn way they wish.
What I disagree with, is combat medics tossing around poison and disease. They should have our new role out in the field.

I believe WAY too many of us are doing a literal translation of doctor in r/l and to doctor within this game...
Santos, EVERYTHING you said is noble and represents the truest definition of what doctor should be if we compare to r/l. However this isn't truely r/l so some things are different.
For example, what doctor in r/l makes medicine? Next to zero. That's all done by pharmaceutical companies...(greedy bloodsuckers).
However for those of us who have a taste of testing economic theories and the like via medical crafting, we are forced to take on the title "doctor" though in concept we may be anything but! Perhaps we are simply medicine brokers, which is what we want to be, but don't have a "pharmacist/drug dealer" title to hang over our heads.
For others, perhaps its all about the money. Again, they haven't sworn a hippocratic (sp?) oath or anything so they're allowed to be any form of doctor they want, (including buff bots).
Obviously the devs have decided that our role is no longer to craft, but to become the "walking ambulance" healers are in other games. So be it.
However to openly criticize another player's take on how he/she plays a doctor is bad form...
Now I'm not a buff bot, however if players want to be buff bots, so be it. They aren't wrong for doing so. That's the true beauty of our profession...we can serve MANY roles...

I just think that the doc community needs to broaden their views on our profession. If you are set and like the way you do things now, I understand and you have every right to your opinion on your playstyle. But, a lot of Docs seem to be losing hope already, and I'm just trying to point out that there is a lot more to our profession.
And in terms of the crafting - I love doctor crafting. I was one of the first Master Docs to commercially sell buff packs on my server, and I made a big business out of it for quite a long time. I still casually craft, but not to the extent of months passed. Sure, it makes me sad to see that Doc won't be the healer/crafter hybrid that it once was, but that means I need to adapt to the changes and find out which is more my playstyle - that of the crafter or that of the healer, or maybe a combination of both. We aren't locked in to one of the other, thankfully.
And I find nothing wrong with the Docs who buff, etc. for profit. Those players are doing a valuable and necessary service to their fellow players, and in my experience those players are extremely helpful and friendly. I meant no disrespect in my earlier post, so please do not take it the wrong way. I just want to recognize that we can do more then just buff our friends and customers.
