Thread: Am I just being mean, or is this not that far off base

I play two accounts on Eclipse, and recently my second account a Doctor/CM, has been getting me a little frustrated. Based in Moneia on Naboo, I get frequent requests for heals and assistance. However, in a weeks time, I'd recieved 1 tip for 3k from a character who needed his hunting party healed up.

I don't run an Artisan character, so I make money primarily through missions and tips, and 3k in a week isn't squat. When you're talking about running 2-4 harvesters (Flora/Chem/Water/Mineral) to make meds, beyond that the quality of resources needed, that's just insane.

So I started saying things like "No" or "Are you paying" and some players started to get angry. I'm just wondering if I'm unusual for puttin a no case = no healing policy in place. It's mostly out of frustration, since I don't mind helping people. But when I have to run a handful of missions every day just to pay for the harvesters to make those meds, and I don't get any recompense, I don't feel very nice.

Back yet again, for another round of SWG... um... fun. Yeah, that's it. (It's not just a diversion while I wait in the queues for WoW BG's)

The only time I will heal for free is if I need med xp. Other then that I want some cash. I never do pets for free. For a Graul Mauler or Rancor with 8-10k ham I want at least 2k up front. Groups are another storey. If we are not doing destroy missions groups gotta pool together and pay my ass for rezing them, cure poison and some serious healing action.

Its just not worth it to using a bunch of rez kits and 50-100 stims on a group and get nothing in return. I know it sounds harsh as you said but just like you said, I got my own bills to pay and probono dont pay the bills.

So no its not harsh. Its reality.

My favorite lines.

"I'm not a vet." or "I don't know how to heal animals go see a Bio Engineer."

For some reason an abused cred stick usually flys my direction and I call upon my skill to heal the flea infested kitty.

Role play healing. It's really fun when other people are watching the conversation and they explain to the poor sod what to do.

Another way to encourage donations. "My heals range from 900 to 1800 per shot. So unless you buy my buffs I'm wasting a huge amount of healing potential. Waste is bad buff are good. It's so much easier to heal someone who just dropped a few thousand creds on buffs and more effecient.

I've performed a few exceptions myself. A member of a rival guild was hurt and I took the oppertunity to glaze over some of the hostility. For me, there's an added risk, since I'm a Covert Rebel as well. There are circumstances, such as during a raid of some sort, when I'm more than willing to heal. Those are actually the times when I can get the most donations. You'd be amazed what heal poison can get you.

Roleplaying is something I'm hit-and-miss with. I don't mind roleplaying, to a point. If someone is in character, I'll try to keep it in character as well. However, under those rules payment demands are standard, since no one does anything for free. Role-Playing bothers me when I see so many people with so many lame names, or just basically powering themselves through their respective trees.

I've started to say no cash, but I haven't decided on a minimum yet. 500c for a large healing doesn't seem outrageous, since anyone that's been fighting for a few hours probably has between 40-100 of various wound types. 6 healable categories for me, at 1-2 application a shot (Doctor 3/2/1/0 right now) can add up.

One of the leverage points I have is the two main areas I frequent, the Rebel Base on Rori and Moneia on Naboo, are usually very light on the healing types. You'll see all sorts of Commandos and Creature Handlers there, but healers aren't that common. So when I say no cash, no heal, waiting in the Med Center can mean a long time of waiting for that 10-per-tick heal.

I generally don't ask for money up front for healing. For enhancements, yes. But I do use my instincts to tell me whether a situation is likely going to be a money-maker, and "just say no" if it looks like a big loser. For example, last night I'm on Dathomir in the outpost. A guy sends me a /tell wanting to know if I will come heal him while he's working on missions. He was already out in the wilds somewhere, and refused to come back and get me...which would mean that I would be out there alone with my weeniecombat skills, until meeting up with him. Instinct told me, if he wasn't even courteous enough to give me an escort so that I COULD HELP HIM OUT, there wouldn't be any money forthcoming.

Compare that to a guy I met on Endor earlier. I was looking for xp, he had a pet with major wounds, so I agreed to heal it. And he tipped me 5k right away. Now there's someone who's going to get good service

Excuses are good too. Don't say "I'm not going to heal you because you're not paying," just mysteriously disappear instead. "Oh, I'm sorry, I'm going to have to log off" and run away. Or, "Hey, something came up with my guild, gotta go" and run away. People who don't want to acknowledge your value as a healer with money and/or thanks are not going to learn the tipping lesson anyways, so don't bother trying to teach them. That way you don't take their flak.

To be honest, its all about your approach. If someone comes to you and asks for a heal and you ask "are you paying?" it makes you sound greedy and cheap. Your best bet is to say something a bit more friendly like "Sure! Donations are always appreciated. Harvesters dont run themselves... =)" something like that will generally get you a happy person. This approach as often gotten me 1-3k tips sometimes but generally people often ask how much it takes to make the stims. So I tell them.

For wounds I use /diagnose and calculate how many heal doses they'll use, then charge 100c a dose. This way I tell them up front how much it will cost. I've never had any complaints. Except for rare cases, I can fully heal anybody for 600c. I heal player injuries for free, since its just one dose anyways, hardly worth the trouble of asking for money at this point. If someone wants me to heal injuries on their pet, I'll calculate that out as well. I don't heal wounds on pets as feeding them is much cheaper and instantaneous.

To the original poster, heck no, you are not off base at all. I have even gotten to the point where I have thousands of adv. components stacked in my house, so really the only meds I make are for my own use, the occasional stim crate order and buffs that I readily sell.

I have shut down nearly all of my harvesters and am giving up artisan skills altogether so I can pursue other dabbling, while still maintainin my Doctor status at this point. I am also very fortunate though that I have a friend in the game who has graciously agreed to help me with waypoints when I need them for harvesters.

To the poster who had the nut from Dathomir ask him/her to meet him in the field, what, was that guy nuts? When I went on a quick survey mission to Dathomir, the ranger met me at the starport, escorted me while I was surveying and not paying attention to all the red on the radar, and even told me at one point when to run, 'cause it was too many for him. Found him his waypoint, cha-ching, he tipped me the 25k we agreed upon, and an extra 1k to cover cloning costs. Meet someone I don't know in the field? Puh-lease! I have only met someone I didn't know in the field once. It was only Rori, and she was only ten seconds away from the three harvesters I was tending to anyway.

Not off base at all. Par for the course, actually...

Think we've all been there in one form or another, at one time or another.

My stock reply is now "I do not heal people" unless there is an offer of payment, offered up by them, first.

I am tired of all the bitching and bieng called names because they want their wounds healed and I want paid for my skills and med packs.

I make more money healing no one, because I dont lose money.

It's a educational thing. Believe it or not, many players do not understand Docs need resources to heal. The most common argument I hear is 'Well entertainers do not charge up front!'. I have to laugh. Entertainers have it hard too, but their healing does not require a number of strange crafted items all requiring specific components, and time to make.

So, my standard rates are 3 creds/wound, up front. 1k per buff. Take it or leave it, no sweat off my back. I'll happily put those who whine on /addignore list. Not to say I don't heal/buff for free once in a while, when I'm feeling friendly- but to expect it of me, is another thing

I usually just tell themi'll heal them for a minimal tip of 500 credits and if they don't want it they can go look for their friends. i buffed 6 stats for a minimum of 1000 ( C/B) but now as master doctor i'll raise it by alot. enhances would make you alot of friends.

Ihad someone tell me " why pay when i can get healed free in the med center" i told him "ok" and hoped that they usuall medics are there ( the ones that useWound A ) .

and anyways i heal people as a friendly gesture sometimes. if i see someone getting clobered in the wild i'll healthem.being a nice person is a good idea overall. I may heal someone just to show off my skills.I sell spare resources sometiems but currently i'm mostly harvesting for myself. call me selfish but i'm not going to sell hq resources for profit because i want them for myself.

and healing pets i usually don't mind that i sometimes get tiped well.

to make money heal those people first : anyone with "Master Commando" and people wearing a full suit of composite armor , anyone in a big famous guild and anyone that tiped you well before.

When I made Master Doc, I turned off any title that had anything even remotely sounding like Medic/Doctor.

I don't heal strangers unless they intrigue me, or ask politely, using full words. I'm an elite snob, I know, but I refuse to deal with anyone who forgets there are vowels in the word please.

To date, 3 months in the medical profession, tips made so far, 12k. You do the math.
