Thread: Why I sometimes get disillusioned by being a Doctor...
SometimesI really wonder what goes through peoples minds when I help people.
I was zooming across Darthomir after grouping with a guildmate, when I notice I just ran over the corpse of a person. I stopped, wonder if it was a bug when I get a tell asking me if I can rez.
I look around. There are more bodies off my radar, seems aguild group of about 7 died while fighting a DJM.
I got off, started rezzing after getting tells from the group asking if I can rez, and one tell saying will you please rez me, I'll pay. I figure ok, no problem, I hadn't asked for money but it is nice for that person to offer some payment for services.
One person has been dead to long (thanks for the undocumented, unknown rez timer SOE).
I rezzed everyone up and gottwo thank you tells, and a tip of 1000 credits from the person who said he would pay.
I stood around for a minute after that and was ignored as they rested up, talking amongst themselves, and proceded to try to go after the DJM again.
I tipped back the 1,000 credits and left.
IdoubtI will ever help this guild out again.
typical
Is why I refuse to help randompeople 9 times out of 10 if I have never met them, or dont know people in their guild.
The tipping issue is so old...
Unfortunately, there are willing medics/doctors that are heal whores to get XP and they don't ask for tips.
So the populous thinks they are doing you a favor by getting all wounded and crap.
So, Master Doctors are the only ones that would be healing for the sake of actually helping and not XP'ing.
Luckily, I'm in a guild, and all my resources are given to me in exchange for me being there to buff and heal.
Other soloers who need the cash to buy meds, really are screwed.
I often will give noob medics free medicine so they can grind, I may even divert my tips to the noobs.
Bottom line, you can't force people to tip.
You can ask, remind, demand or tell people to tip you if you want, or you won't heal them...that's Ok, I will.
A Holes and **edit** heads will never get healed, period.
I also feel the same way. I got so fed up with all the BS that I just took my MD tag off. When people look in my Profile it says I'm a MD, so when they ask I just tell them I dropped it. I very rarely go out side of my guild anymore to help ungreatfull people. On the very rare occasion I feel like buffing the public, I do it very discreatly (sp). I always told myself I wouldn't be like this, but after 4 months of getting driven into the ground for little or no pay, what do people expect. Now I just sit back and laugh to myself as people scream for buffs. /shrug I guess the public does it to themselves. Oh well their problem not mine, its no wonder why so many Master Docs are so unwilling to help people. I never thought I would feel like this, but I guess it comes in time.
Just so that we don't get too jaded, let me share an old story with you.
Shortly after the Warren missions were added to the game, I went out there with a bunch of friends. Of course, since this was a new thing to do, the place was swarming with folks trying to make it through the warren. You'd pass them all the time in the hallways and could hear them jabbering back and forth.
At one point, we ran into a nasty pack of beasts and we, along with the help of another crew took them out. Shortly thereafter, that other crew lost a teammate in battle. Apparently, they had noticed I was a doctor and came running to me. They asked me to help so I rushed over to get her back on her feet. I rezzed her, but I didn't hang around for a thank you - I needed to get back to my own crew. I was swarmed with tells saying "thanks" for getting her back up. I believe they tipped me around 10,000 credits and were very grateful. I even ran into one of them a week or so later in Coronet and they stopped to say "Hi" and "Thank you" one more time. ![]()
So, you see, not everyone is awful - it just seems that a lot of them are. ![]()
There are a lot of great people out there, but there are a lot of jerks too. Unfortunately the jerks are the ones that seem to have a greater impact on how we feel.
I do have some advice though. You can be helpful if you want, but don't leave feeling that you were undervalued. You really offered your service for free.
If you want value for what you do, you need to set the price up front. Its not money grubbing or selfish, its a way to protect yourself from feeling bad. If you say "sure I'll res you for 5k credits" the onus is on them to accept or reject the value of your service. Not only will you get valued (at aprice that you feel is correct), you will be educating them that your service DOES have value. Maybe even help them remember to value the next doc that helps them out. If they refuse to pay what you set as your price, then they do not get your service, and you do not need to feel bad, as obviously they do not value you as much as you feel is fair.
Hope I made some sense, but thats how I do it. Its the same in many service-oriented businesses in RL, including medicine. People can't really afford to work for free, and want others to value what they do (be it in credits, respect, materials, or whatever).
I also hate it when that happens...
for example, I was wandering one dayand some people asked me to join their group and they said they'd pay me... after buffing/healing them for a while, with minimal thank yous, I figured that I'd get paid and that'd be worth it. I went afk for a min or so while we in camp and they all disbanded and left me lol
Never again ![]()
anywho, about that state your price before hand... what if they say "i don't have 5k, im flat broke or i have 245 creds" then what? do you believe them? or do you just say no sry go home
Right now, I generally tell people sorry, im in the middle of crafting them right now when they ask for buffs... but ill have to start selling as im rather poor now

personally, i dont care if they only have 245 credits, if they are asking for a buff they will pay my price or they will find another DR. now, to be fair, i do often buff complete newbies who dont even ask, but if they ask, they will pay my price. just the way i am, if i help someone out of the good will of my heart, thats fine. but if they ask for my help, there is a price
I didnt become a doc to help random people, although I do sometimes, with no expectations.
I became a doc to provide mobile hospital services etc to my guild during military exercises, and to be able to self buff myself for solo excursions.
You really shouldnt expect much from random people. You are just setting yourself up to be disapointed. Perform the service, and if someone demonstrates good manners, you possibly just made an ig friend ![]()
