Thread: SWG Forum Ranking Changes...

I agree with the "my opinion"-rating.

People use the 1/5 stars just for "agree/disagree".

I always told, take this stupid system out, or give the starsnames.

I use only 5 stars for people, who write a good quality of post and 1 star for people out of control (agressive/offtopic/etc).

For the rest i am lazy too. If i have no guidelines for the system, i can't use it as intended.
Everybody has another point of wiev, what he/she wants to rate with the current system.

I like it. As long as you take into account the bandits, it may encourage people to think before they post.

I do like the idea of somehow incorprorating messages read into it somehow though.... but that is only because I lurk much more than post.

I haven't used the Star System in, wow, a long time... since beforelast Christmas maybe? I have it turned off in my Options, because I find it more annoying than useful, to be bluntly honest.

I won't be turning it back on either, it's just not a Forum feature that I feel is conducive to a positive forum experience.

I love this new forum change, but not the idea with stars, because I know of ppl who just go through the forums and one star anything and everything. I've read awesome post and tried to put a 5 to get their rating back up because some moron gave them a 1 star without reading it probably. =( If you guys can keep a tight track on who's doing 1 stars then I think it can work

For those asking, the same star ranking type system is used on EQ and EQ2 forums as well as the forums of other non MMO communities. The EQ and EQ2 forums did adapt over time and the one star bandits were ultimately defeated, not by us, but by the community.

As the post above stated however you can choose to just ignore the star ratings, it is after all just a community feature and has not bearing on your ability to make posts.

This is a pretty cool idea. There's obvious flaws, though, with the fact that no one will ever be able to get a 4.9 post rating. Also, would it be possible to be able to see our average post rating in the dashboard? All we are able to see now is a round number of stars, whereas the coming forum titles deal with fractions of stars. So for me, I have an average rank of 3 stars, however I don't know if that's 3.0 stars or 3.3 stars, etc.

Another thing I think would be neat is to give some titles based on minutes spent on the forums or posts read (however I think there's an option to mark all posts read somewhere without actually opening them in a browser) or total logins or something. Add a little more stuff to the mix rather than stars, longevity, and post count (especially post count since that just leads to people farming/spamming).

This is definitely a step in the right direction, though!

Edit: Also, one more thing to the people who are reading this: the forums are a great place for the community of the game to get together, however a lot of people in the game either choose to ignore them or don't even know about them. What is being done to get the word out about how integral the forums are to the well-being of the community and the game?

You know what would be nice? If you guys over at SOE gave a brother a warning right b4 he was gonna get suspended from the boards b/c of flaming and trolling so he can cool it down a bit.

The community policies are that warning

GarVa, again, you can choose to ignore it but, in practice, I don't think everybody will.

It has no bearing on your ability to make posts but it might make you feel unwanted when you are really a great contributor.

2. What about one star bandits (eq: those that go through one starring every post)

A: Contrary to popular belief, these are 1. rare and 2. have very little effect on the rating or ranking systems. The only thing it hurts is the bandits wrist. It takes 20 1 star ratings to cause a post to be hidden by the default system. Additionally we are putting measures in to be able to track and even "title" these posters so everyone will know who they are. When we findsomeone who abuses the rating systemwe do lower their "rating" weight to prevent abuse.

this looks like the best part sofar, till we hear about what the rankings give peaople.

Ok not meaning to sound like a broken record... we know that it will take time for people to adjust but we are willing to give that time, because the system does work well in our other forums. Regardless of how bad you think one star bandits are they are not that big of an issue. Its just a matter of perspective, when it happens to you of course it seems like its the biggest problem with the system. But the system does work itself out, if that was not the case then we would not have people with 3 and 4 star post ratings that even have over 1000 post. I am waiting for the metrics this week then I will post the final "proposed" star ratings on the star ranked tree.

This sounds great. Hopefully posts will become better and there will be a lot less flaming.

Yeah, if I am looking at this right, I am already at 9 of normal ranking and am clearly not going to get 4.9 average. Lol!

Looks interesting. Hopefully it'll work well to defeat the recent rash of one star ninjas who have struck the Architect forum in full force.

Not bad.

Im guessing that the star ranking system will be abused more then it is now though.

Im sorry I didn't read all of the previous posts but is it going to be an average of given rankings and recieved. Otherwise this may keep people from speaking whats on thier mind for fear of recieving a low rank even if they do have a valid point.
