I have attempted to read the entire thread, but I'm a busy man. So I apologise if I'm repeatingsome issues here. But I do like what Flatfingfers wrote:

So let's look at this from the ground up: What are thekinds ofmeasurable forum actionsthat should be rewarded (and thus encouraged)withcool forum titles? Here are some suggestions, ranging from easiest to implement to hardest:

  • number of posts (higher is better)

  • length of forummembership (longer is better)

  • star rating (higher is better)

  • number of posts receiving an Official "Good Contribution"Accolade (higher is better)

  • average number of views of all posts (higher is better)

  • number of new posts started (higher is better)

  • number of forums posted in (higher is better)

  • number of forums regularly posted in (higher is better)

  • average length of posts (higher is better)

  • number of posts linked to by other posts (higher is better)

  • averagehelpfulness of post content(subjective -- more is better)

  • average friendliness and courtesy (subjective -- more is better)

I do think the ratings system should account for a poster's dedication to the boards and therefore the community. The above suggestions are all a good example of that, but one I think is missing is the number of posts the account holder has read and the number of hours within the forums (although I can see that last one being abused). Certain rankings such as Community Leader should, in my opinion, take into account what they have read - not specific posts, just a total number. This will make us readers have a certain trust in what people above that rank actually say as they have a proven record in reading the boards generally.

Ackis also wrote:

And there should be a rank for those with over 10k posts.

There is a point here, there are those that have really dedicated their time to the community through these boards, perhaps the higher ranks (Warrent Officer onwards?)require a greater number of posts?

Finally, and this may be a bad idea as it'll attract a certain kudos to some, but Mawie posted:

Can you make it so that people who abuse the one star system get the title "Village Idiot"?

Thinking about my first point above a little further. Having the number of posts read and amount of time online together with number of logins could assist those who never post to gain one or two rankings alone aside from your proposed tree.

So right around the time we should be seeing JTL beta start one might happen to hope if one believes in coincidence?

Right, I'm back again with a more detailed description of my idea to incorporate how many posts one has read to affect the title one is rewarded with.

We could be rewarded with a prefix to our title if our Total Message Views equalled the following:

<100 = Nothing (no prefix)

100 - 250= Student

251 - 2500 = Graduate

2501 - 10000= Scholar

10001 - 50000= Academic

50001 - 100000 = Wisened

>100000 = Cultured

Of course that's just a rough list, I'm sure others can think of more imaginative titles, but you get the idea. My reasoning behind this is for those who never or rarely post they are able to be recognised to be the silent listeners they are. Of course they will have to post at least once to be recognised.

You need to become a Veteran to edit. You need 6 months to become a Veteran.

And this is once again why I suggested putting something on the initial post answering this type of concern.

GarVa is Forum admin, not game dev. The devs work on the game, GarVa works on the forums. So there are no extra resources or time being taken away from the game to do this.

You will be morons of the highest calibre if you implement a ranking system based on the number of stars someone gives you.

The key, in my mind, is to mix in the giving rankings too ... Folks who 1star consistently should have their rankings lowered to griefer/troll.

If you are gonna have a star system, then you have to report/reward/punish on both the giving & receiving side.
