now the star system do mean something because someone can grief your ranking away.

Your concern is answered above, and while its possible it is likely not to happen. Because 1. We can tell (and may make it so others can) when people are doing nothing but one starring others. and 2. It is a community thing and while At first some people will have the urge to do this it is something that over time, will even out. The more ratings you get the less each individual one will have.

This is also why we have made the 2 trees for the rankings, and they will both have similar privileges for both trees. You will still get those and lastly, yes we know that the last few star ranks will be hard to achieve and if they do become impossible we will make the necessary adjustments

Who are you and what have you done with the real Garva? Someone slipped something into your Cheerios if you actually believe mass 1-starring won't happen. You've been around long enough to know better.

Making it so other posters can actually see who the 1-star bandit is won't make a dramatic difference. Action will need to be taken on your end, something along the lines of listing all character names w/server belonging a 1-star bandit's account would be nice.

You mean like it's evened out over the last over the last 14 months?Unless the powers that belet you wield the perma-forum-banstick with a vengance, the number of 1-star bandits will only increase.

Sounds like a push to move forum posting more to a popularity contest.

Being popular doesn't have any bearing on whether or not you're right. Penalizing people who are right but unpopular would seem unwise.

The people working on the forums are not the same people working on the game. Moreover, the forums are a great tool for community feedback and new publish testing, and are very important to the game overall.

I like the system. Very nicely set up.

My question is for those of us who were blue glowie at one point in time. Is there anyway that a 'special' title could be given to us, to represent time served as CommunityRepresentative

Anything would be cool, just as long as its not hawt pink.

gotta say I dislike any idea where forum rank is tied to how many stars you get...

The popularity of someone's opinions shouldn't weigh on how they're ranked in the system...

Actually some of the most popular people (in a good way) do not even qualify for higher ranks in the star ranked tree, so no... thatidea is incorrect, it is not about that. It is meant to reflect post quality, some people will never like it but it will happen in some form or another. Your concerns are the exact reason that the system was made, it is a means for the community to voice to each other how they feel about one another. If you see your self getting lots of low ratings you may go "oh wonder how I can post better to keep that from happening", or you can just choose to ignore it.

Editing will be at the rank 2 mark (for those that asked)

Honestly, it's time away from the game. I like the forums, even appreciate them, but all I want is basic functionality, logins to work, and exchange of words/information.

2. What about one star bandits (eq: those that go through one starring every post)

A: Contrary to popular belief, these are 1. rare and 2. have very little effect on the rating or ranking systems. The only thing it hurts is the bandits wrist. It takes 20 1 star ratings to cause a post to be hidden by the default system. Additionally we are putting measures in to be able to track and even "title" these posters so everyone will know who they are. When we findsomeone who abuses the rating systemwe do lower their "rating" weight to prevent abuse.

Hmm i have mixed feeling about the ranking system. On one hand i like the idea we are rewarded for out time and our rating are taken into account. However on other and this is what concerns me, there are many immature people out there who simply abuse the system on a regular basis because they dont agree with your post.

Saying that one star bandits are rare is incorrect, it just depends on the forums board you visit. I have recently had two attempts at posting in the jump to lightspeed forums for a prolonged time. Both times i have been more or less 'forced' to head back to the relative safty of the ranger forums because people were 1 staring me just because i brought up alternative however constructive points.

I dont like the fact that many many people use the rating system as a tool to agree or disagree and this needs to be addressed. A good example of this is from3 past discussions about what playstyle you would be using most in jump to lightspeed. The majority were discussing about making people allways attackable because their gaming experiences would be ruined if this wasnt the case, a valid opinion. However the problems came when myself and few others posted that our opinions differed in that we prefered PvE. We provides for and against points for the two perspecitves and kept our post constructive at all times, yetwithin the space of 30 minutes i had gone from a 5 star poster to a 1 star poster on ALL my previous postsin those threads ultimatly moving my overall ratings down from a 5 to a 3.

This is not acceptable that immature behavior like this can be taken into account.

Alternative Proposal:

I propose that ratings are only taken into consideration and thus can effect your overall star rating if they are with 1 or 2 starts of the mean value for that post. For example:

I post a long winded proposal on a ranger revamp. I get 10 '5 stars'. Someone comes along and thinks it would be funny to 1 star my post because he/she disagrees with it. The mean for that post would be 5 at that time so this one star would be classed as 'abuse' of the system so wouldnt go towards the ratings.

This solution allows people to spend the time and effort to post constructive feedback and discussion points whilst at the same time limit and even remove the abusive and immature behaviour found common on these forums.

Does anyone have any points or opinions to add on this?

as stated a few times now... the ranks have similar privileges, just the titles and colors are different, but yes... your opinions will determine how the community views you as a whole in your post rating.

Also note that I have updated the regular rank post counts, I accidentally copied them from the wrong column in my excel

At first I was against the use of implementin' such a system based on Stars; but readin' further on, Am glad I came upon that Q/A.

Such a rankin' system looks good as so long as those control features be inplace.

Somethin' in which to help reduce the abuse of the one-star bandits.

A good plan indeed.

I like the proposed changes in concept. I'm a little skeptical about whether it will work in practice, but am certainly not opposed to seeing it in action.

I did appreciate the Q&A section of the initial post. It helped answer some of my questions/skepticism, but also got me to thinking...

I haven't seen a big value of the ranking system to date and as a result, I don't use it much. I *do* use it whenever I see "first" posts (1 star). If I were to only uses the ranking system to 1 star these "first" idiots, would that brand me a "1 star bandit" in the system?

I'm also curious about other enhancements to the forums. While I think the ranking system changes are interesting, I regularly have problems staying logged in over 30 minutes and as a non IE user (I use Mozilla and more frequently lately Mozilla Firefox), I don't get the pretty post composition tools IE (aka the security hole browser) users get. I am not suggesting that the ranking efforts be abandoned, but I do recommend that any announcements about this new system include a Q&A about other forum efforts in progress to avoid the inevitable flames/rants.

You might also want to state in any announcement for people that don't understand it that forum development is a different set of people from those actually working on SWG development. This will help deal with the people posting about their pet peeves in game being more important.

Sounds cool. I know I (and many others) have asked about ranking on the boards and it's good to see "the list" of ranks etc. Now, to work on my post count...

I think it'll do. Although I believe the 1 star bandits are more prevelant than you lead to believe. But maybe they just lurk certain forums. For example I doubt they check out the development forum much, but you better believe they are lurking in the jedi forum.

P.S. Garva I missed your home show last week. Were you just buzy or did you have no good homes to show?

Actually in the reset the other day the login issue was fixed for most users, unfortunately lithium does not 100% support browsers other than Explorer but they do take those browsers into consideration in their programming.

do you really think that people will really use good judgement to rating posts. if everyone here is uses good judgement about posting and rating, there would be no need for mods. not everyone rates posts.

maybe you should allow yourself to be rated, to test your theory
