A Padawan System

Why not get rid of this dependancy on NPCS and move to Players? The current player jedi should be instrumental in future jedi advancement!

Excellent idea! Could it not be possible for those that make it to Jedi to have a special option on a radial menu to generate random quests for the potential Jedi? Example:

---Jedi opens wannabe's radial menu and selects Generate Quest. The Jedi player receives a mail with a very briefly worded, randomly generated quest or task for the wannabe to perform. The Jedi player can then roleplay with the wannabe and explain the quest needs as he/she sees fit, thereby creating an active and dynamic quest system. XP rewards are of course generated by the quest, with the Jedi player being performed of the success/failure of the wannabe. Any items collected by the wannabe and given to the Jedi would of course be auto-cleaned from the Jedi's inventory in a server-safe way (apologies, I understand the need for practicality, but I am no programmer)---

Of course, such a system would be tricky to implement, but would indeed make it a lot tougher for people to become Jedi, as they would actually need to search out a live player, not a static NPC. Understandably, one of the prime concerns with such a system would be poor Jedi players having their names being spread in cantinas across the galaxy, and the fact that once known a poor Jedi would never have any peace. But to counter that, perhaps the BHs can be included somehow. Of course, it would be unwise for potential Force-users to go spouting Jedi player names, because a) they just mark themselves as potential targets, and b) they may find a rather annoyed Jedi knocking on their door. There may be practical ways of dealing with these concerns, such as context based enemy spawns for loud-mouthed players, or their names being listed on BH mission terminals.

These are all just thoughts of course, might be completely undoable, but you did ask

I have a request:

Go to Amazon, and first buy the DVD Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MEVQ/ref=pd_sxp_elt_l1/104-4757897-1899928

This is an EXCELLENT video series originally produced for PBS that discussesthe fundamental mythos that drive the many stories in the world.

Oh, yeah...this series was produced at SKYWALKER RANCH. You know...the place that George Lucas owns? You know why? Joseph Campbell was a driving force behind the original Star Wars 'mythology', and basically lays out the path that heros throughout history have taken in order to 'ascend'...or in our example, become a Jedi.

You guys really REALLY REALLY need to watch this, and then make the process to become a Jedi just like that...it will involve the player, and make them truly feel liek they are struggling against the oppressive forces of the universe to attain something worthwhile...not just grind a bunch of boring XP.

Even better, Actually BUY one of Campbell's books:

The Hero with a Thousand Faces

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0691017840/ref=pd_sim_books_1/104-4757897-1899928?v=glance&s=books

This will make your lives a LOT easier when if comes to making these quests, as they will be both inspiring, memorable, and FUN to boot.

Remember back to Ultima 4, the Quest of teh Avatar? yes, it was hella long ago...but that game followed the same principles, and it is one of the BEST games ever (even with the crappy graphics!)...and is exactly the kind of questing this game needs to breathe new life into it!

I'm not trying to promo Amazon or anything, just trying to make it easier for folks to acquire these really useful (and appropriate to this discussion!) books.

I assume that this is to change the system from the holocron "go master this, go master that" routine.. if not, well just /ignore lol.

I think that the best way to do this, would be to have multiple static NPC's. Each one covers a different aspect of the game.

I.E. One for the combat ranged classes, One for artisans and so on, that way people are not forced to pursue a line of play they cant stand... like the BH wanna be that is told to go be chef by the holocron... can we say EWWWW?

This static NPC would give you a long set of quests to accomplish. Upon completeing these quests, your character would be directed to a new NPC, a random NPC, maybe that noble on Tattoine, or jsut about any in game NPC should be usable. This NPC would give you a choice of say one of three proffessions to master, so that way you can choose what you want to do, not be forced into something thatyou would never use.Once you have achieved this, you are sent to the third and final "secret to you" NPC. This NPC would send you on the final Quest. This quest should require that you help someone, that you kill something, that you make something special, and finally that you acihve 25 location badges. All the things you are required to do should be within the lines of your characters abilities. Not "Go make a grand Hall... Uhm... right.

This would make getting to Jedi a journey, and not a grind IMHO. Each day you take another step to geting that FS char.

Thunderheart,

Is this In-Concept about what Jedi should do after they've unlocked their slot?

Or, is this thread about whatplayers shoulddo to open up their Jedi slot?

I'm confused.

TH,

My biggest concern with a quest based system is that I'll have to compete with other players for the chance. Make it difficult, I'm fine with that. But don't make me have to wait for some uber PA with 100 members to get all theirs done first.

Also, Please don't make me *require* a PA of 100 members to get me through it.

One thing to look at is the Intellect badge. Its a rare spawn, spawns in different places, and once somebody does it you have to wait for a couple hours to give it a shot yourself. So what happens is we get groups of players running around looking for this thing for days and weeks, they find it (cheer for joy!) and some griefer comes in and steals it from 'em.

The path to Jedi should be a personal journey, something that you predominately do on your own. Maybe certain tasks will be to help/interact with other players, but it shouldn't require or be limited by other players.

I don't want EverCamp EpicQuests to unlock my slot. Grinding professions would be better than that!

The main important thing I believe for the Jedi path is to give the Jedi a way to collect their own light saber components. Make it a really tough quest to find a krayt and/or crystal surveying device. Make the device only usable by Jedi and make it so this way of surveying can only be done like once a week or so.

I would love for there to be some randomness in these quests. This would keep me from logging onto www.BeAJedi.com and doing all the walkthroughs and becomming a Jedi Master at the end of the week. Yes, this is added complexity and such, but I sure beats cookie cutter Jedi.

I think it would be really cool if one of the quest sections of the jedi path involved an actualsearch for your FS character.

From the movies and books, jedi sought people with high metachlorine counts, but had to find them. They could not simply sense them.

I think it would be great to have a light (rebel)/dark jedi (imperial)from whom you get a series of quests to locate a NPC who is force sensitive. There would be rumors of a child with strange powers on one of the planets. Both sides would be trying to get to the NPC before the other.

As part of this quest, you would have to help the jedi/dark jedi gather the resources tomake a metachorine meter, make the metachorine meter, and do several fact finding quests to try to locate the FS NPC.

As the final step, you would get something with some kind of DNA or other signature, which you would then have to take to a player bounty hunter, and have the player bounty hunter use probe droids to help you find the FS NPC (this gives a market for player bounty hunter's services).

After you and the bounty hunter find the FS NPC, you would have to test his metachlorine count and convince him to return with you to the jedi/dark jedi (through a series of questions/discussions that you have to give certain answers/responses to). If you fail, you have to start over.

When you succeed, thatNPC becomes your FS character (subject of course to you changing appearance on the character creation screen) and your FS slot opens. This would be the finale of the whole FS quest line.

Also, I had one other thought...I think the FS patch should include a long line of quests that comprise locating jedi/dark jedi, and getting them to trust you enough to tell you who their fellow jedi and masters are. Basically to gain access to the secret circle of jedi/dark jedi that moves you up the chain, until you get to the final "go find your jedi" quest detailed above.

Quests:
Personally i think the whole crystal loot drop is silly. [edit: i think the Pearl uses in a saber is even sillier]

I think Jedi should have to suvery-like for their crystal. Allow them to "use the Force" to focus on a crystal in the area. You could then even spawn some defenders around it, or maybe just make them take a journey to the location to find the Jedi crystal. The crystal could even be only usable by that Jedi (make it a no drop).

As much as im agaisnt the huge amount of Jedi in this time frame, Jedi have a very Personal feeling around them. This feeling is severly lacking in SWG currently. In Star Wars, a Jedi quested for their crystal, the handle, the parts... some were made out of multi crystals, other lightsabers used a swoop handle bar for a handle. A jedi fought better with his/her personally crafted saber then with a borrowed one.

more on this later.

This is on topic, but off base.... Let me explain

When I first heard of SWG, I invisioned a world full of possibilty, I thought beeing in a cantina would be a great social event, I imagined running from swarms of Storm Troopers with some vital stolen material. I also Invisioned beeing on a remote location, near death from desease or poisens, and suddlenly seeing a ghost of a jedi... You know LIKE THE MOVIES. That is how I think ppl should start thier "Path of the Jedi"

Good Morning,

I cant understand for the life of me why they would change this? I have done everything in the game all profession but 9 and i have no jedi. There is no more in game content. I have over 80 badges and have done every NPC in the game includeing everytheme park. It seems really silly to me that you would make a player who has played every aspect of your game go through a bunch more trials and tribulations just to make the population that cant grind happy. By changing the game at this point it is taking away al thw rok i put forward. The tracking sytems have been so poor up to this point I have no faith that I will be given proper crdit twords anything. I have completed more things than any jedi in the history of SW. This games just trying to get people locked in for more unwanted time to get you money. I know i will finish the remaining 9 profession before the end ofmarch but its not fair for those folks that have been loyal and played your nightmarich system for the past year. I know all my in game contacts and freinds are quitting if they mess with the FSCS system. This change only benifits whiners and people who dont want to put in the time and commitment. If playing every part of the game and using all its content doesnt turn on FSCS then there is no real path to the jedi only a preset template for people to grind through.

Somewhere along the path, it would be great if the Jedi was sent to a cave of some sort that only they could enter. Inside would be branching paths based on decisions the player makes. If you fail (assuming you're trying to go for the light side of the force) and follow the path to the dark side, the instructor who sent you there would give you a talking to and require that you complete more training before you come back and try again.

It would be great if the trial in the cave was somewhat personalized. Like you might have to face the MOB or NPC that has db'ed you the most in the past (if that data is stored somewhere.) I don't know how hard it would be but it would be awesome to fight an NPC that looked exactly like your character with the exact same skills.

I think to keep it fresh, you're going tohave to mix it up a bit...

I think the idea of trainers or static NPC's giving missions is OK, but that is only the place to start. Who wants to go to more statics and get more missions, not me. Personally, i think it would be cool if there was a system in place that gave very random missions based on the concept of light vs. dark. It could be something as simple as an onscreen message that reads:

"You feel a disturbance in the force... Light-years away, the anguished cries of akindredspiritcall to you, (your jedi name here)... You feel the force urgently pulling you toward Yavin IV."

Shall you heed the call: Yes or No

As a jedi, you have the choice to ignore it.... or not... it's just randomly generated quest that selects jedi at random to perform these quests! Also, you can call more than one jedi to the quest at a time... if it's a particularly difficult quest, for instance, maybe you call jedi at random on a particluar serveruntil 3 respond "Yes". First, that's just cool because you could get player interaction... Second, you meet fellow jedi in your galaxy and fight together.

And then once you get there, who knows... This is where you have to get creative, maybe there's a temple/dungeon that spawns at the waypoint given to you or the group (depending if it's a solo or group mission), that is only jedi accessable. That would make things interesting and would solve the BH camping issue, as they won't be able to follow you inside.

As far as content, I think we're at a point where you can pretty much either read up on it... or just make up something cool. If you think about the era in which the game is set, Jedi are rare: they are in hiding, due to that fact that they are being hunted into extinction. This means no bodyguard/negotiation/knight type missions, due to the fact that the jedi are facing more danger than anyone else in the game. For example: You wouldn't be protecting the Queen of Naboo if you were the last of your kind, you'd be protecting yourself... and not for selfish reasons, so that the knowledge of the force can still be passed on. However, you've got to write in a future for these guys. Eventually the jedi will grow in numbers, and they won't always need to hide. Personally, I think that for the light Jedi... eventually, they should be given the option to form their own Jedi Council, this could be as easy as giving the Master Jedi the option to Place a Jedi Council Building, much like Dancers can place Cantinas... but there can only be one Jedi Council per Server or maybe you need 3 Jedi Masters to be able to place the Council, who knows. However, this means that eventually... Yes... Vader will have to fall...I mean, come on guys, you didn't think that we couldstop the clock andlive forever in Vader's era did you? Come on, the guy just stands there and breathes for crying out loud! The good side of this is that it opens the door for another sith uprising, thus allowing for clan type battles between jedi and sith.. much like overt faction PVP. The fact of the matter is that eventually we're going to have to get to a point where much of the content is created by the players... and we can't be held prisoner to a point in time where the jedi are rare, and there is already a sith master and an apprentice... not much room for advancement.
