There a certain things I always wondered about reading this forum.
I would like to know what you see in cantinas. What are cantinas, why did they choose the word and so on...
I sure have an opinion about that, but I would like to here yours first, partly because I don't I am no tin the mood for becoming flamed...
So let's here it, masters of grace in all galaxies.
Curious greets,
Sharven

Yep, some dive bar. Sums it up nicely.
Give me real theatres to play, where I can light the stage, and add set dressings to. Then we'll be out of the sleazy dives...

I think it refests to Episode 4, a new hope, where the bar setting, Obi-wan and Luke meet Han Solo, was called the "Creature Cantina". from that point on, all Bars in the films were "Cantinas". Guess it stuck ingame.
In German, "Kantine" is theestablishment you eat/get snacks from, when you work/study in a Firm or University.

Which is annoying, really. Just because the Mos Eisley spaceport bar was called a cantina, that doesn't mean all drinking establishments across the galaxy are called cantinas. Just once I'd like to see a pub, or a tavern or something.
Star Wars is full of this kind of typecasting. Greedo was a bounty hunter, so all Rodians are bounty hunters. Jabba was a gangster, so all Hutts are gangsters. For all we knew prior to Episode I, the Hutts had a beautiful and elegant culture centered around fine art appreciation, and Jabba was a big disappointment to his mother.

hmm... I hoped for some more feedback. I wasn't so much interested in the word but far more in your opinion.
Well, I agree with Xyrdre mostly. If you compare NPC cantinas to rl places the first thing that comes into my mind are sleazy night clubs or even brothels. I don't know any other place where so many people, dressed in erotic suggesting dance in an erotic suggesting way, each and everyone looking for their own tips. The dark atmosphere enhances this impression even more. You can almost smell the sweat, beer and lust, a smell that your character surely drowns in. Off course I am only referring to NPC cantinas. Player cantinas off course are different, since they are whatever you make out of them.
I don't get why so many of us give in to this. If we behave in the the why that fits to these establishments, we must not be supprised ig we get treated accordingly. And there are so many other possivilities, the Universe that was given to us is huge. And the cities are for the entertainers to take.
If you consider placed that "that work like a cantina" there are hotels and theatres. Most theatres have a huge stage, much more useful for dances like lyrical, formal or the new dance (theatralic). The atmosphere is still "dark" but at let's you think of nobles in tailcoats and gowns, of nights of glamour. Hotels on the other hand arn't a very good place to dance, since there is even less something like a stage than there is in a "cantina". But it's a light place of game and fun, and if you're more the playful type it's definately a better place than a cantina. Who knows, if enought people are there even the wheels of fortune might be fun.
If you look a bit further there are a lot places that do not work like cantinas, but where dancing still might be fun. I mean we still are dancers, not heal- and buff vendors. One of the most funny dances I ever had was when I set up a camp in the middle of the krayt graveyard on Tatooine. Hunters who wanted to win the worthiest trophy a hunter could ever have passed by, watched and talked a bit and soon we had a real hunting "party" of about zwo dozen people in the desert. Other possibilities are the Vreni Island theatre. Or, why not the most beautiful place to dance there is in this game, the palace in Theed? And, if you look even further, there are other places of atonishing beauty in cities outide of the main traffic all over the galaxy.
So why do we humilliate ourselves to dance exclusively in cantinas as, if you excuse the provocating phrase, taking up the roles of whores and gigolos within, if we could be true artists? The only reason why people don't dance in such places often is because noone else does it, if there is not accidently an event. To change this it would require just one thing: Do it. When more master dancers thought that way and would be willing to, say, not dance in Coro cantina but in Coro theatre, for a few hours even if noone is around word would pass and the place would be established within to weak. All you need is about a dozen master dancers convinced. People will come. I've seen this before. There are always bored players in the large cities who just look around, and enter even a theatre when they see a blib there, just beause of curiousity.
So that's the thought I actually wanted to share. If you feel like me, that the cantinas are actually the cage we locked ourselves in, then just walk out it.

Ages ago, the cantina was the place where people would hang out if they had nothing better do do, wanted to brag a bit, spread rumours, push drugs or harass the dancers. Because everybody was there people also came to the cantina if they needed help with anything in game or just wanted to form a hunting group.
These days cantinas are filled with spamming zombies, a couple of die-hard ATK entertainers and the few patrons who still value such things.

I'd wish they'd change the layouts of the different cantinas. It would be nice.

I don't know how it is on a lot of other servers but on Starsider we have all of the above.
I was only referring to NPC cantinas, and they are not all kinds of bars. They are just two kinds of bars. pirate outpost bars and normal bars. First are actually a storage room, latter are well... dirty dive bars.
Even though small exceptions, like the Lucky Despot which is of a different design exist.
A player cantina, off course, is whatever you make out of it. But this does not explain, why many people in this forum, seem to be completely focused on cantinas, when we can have more fun in different places. And we don't need to betray what we stand for there.
