Thread: A strange thing happened on my way to kill some pickets

It can happen, Ikewe. It happens a lot more often than I think we realize, but still not often enough to give us any comfort.

I've decided to hold on to master entertainer for the time being but my dance and music career is in serious jeopardy. I've picked up medic as part of a grand but impossible scheme, but I think i'm going to keep it (going to try for 2/0/4/2 overall) and master pistoleer. I will never master dancer or musician but will go 0-0-4-0 in both (for the songs and dances).

Funnything occured over the weekend. I was hanging out with a friend of mine in her PC city cantina. I've been wearing my apprentice gunfighter tag for about a week now. I had some bf to get rid of and rather than watch the buffbot, i pulled out my mandoviol and got rid of it myself. After it was gone, I went into the main room to ask her where to get buffs at. One of the patrons in the cantina noticed I had my apprentice gunfighter tag on and I was toting my mandoviol still. He said something about a gunfighter carrying a banjo. I told him I like to play "Dueling Banjos" right before I kill something. A round of laughs resounded through the cantina. He said if hears a banjo playing somewhere outside, he's running away. More laughter erupted inside. Granted, I got respect for my pistol skills but I think people are going to think twice about seeing me as just an entertainer.

It was nice to get respect for something and not cast aside for my entertainer profession choice.

I believe people appreciate us, too, I always have. The problem lies with 2 things. First, the uber leet combat doodz who enjoy harassing people in an "anonymous" environment. They are jerks and always will be. It's just that they can be very loud and vocal about it, so it tends to drown out the silent appreciation. Second, because the bots are so prevalent, noobs are being taught that this is how the game is played. Right now, I don't think our professions are salvageable, not with afk bots in existence. If...When they are gone, things will change, and more people will appreciate us. They don't right now because either they don't have to, or they've been taught not to do so.

Made me smile a month or so back, was on dant and popped into the Cantina. Soon realised there was a live dancer (who when I checked her badges was also a master musician) and got a buff off her (which naturally I paid for) in less time the lemmings on their buffbots .

Some of you may have noticed that my recent posts have signaled my surrender in the battle to bring honor and recognition to our profession. This past weekend I was spending my time hunting pickets. I stopped into the Mining Outpost very early in the morning to heal some of my mind wounds and battle fatigue and a very strange thing happened. There were 4 buffbots set up and spamming their services inside the cantina so I picked an open spot along the wall and started dancing. Although I was not there to entertain, I found myself greeting and talking with people as they came into the cantina. Many ignored me and simply proceeded to their personal favorite bot but 3 players asked (and yes they asked! rather than just /invite) if I was mind buffing. One person used the /invite but when I declined and explained my policy he accepted. All of them tipped. /boggle So instantly I'm wondering if I have entered a twilight zone version of Shadowfire. Then to top it off, 4 players were so shocked to find a dancer who was actually at the keyboard that they tipped me just for being there. I don't know whether to laugh or cry that finding a live entertainer is so rare as to be shocking but I was pleased to find that there were indeed people who were appreciative of live entertainers. I do not think I can go back to the way I was... but I have decided to hold on to my dancing career for at least a little while longer. There's even a discussion going on on the server about how entertainers are a needed yet unappreciated class.... It must be the twilight zone...

here's to wondering what the future will hold.

The other day I was wandering around the Dant Mining Outpost with a friend, waiting on a resource delivery for a crafting project, and we stopped in the Tavern for a quick break. As with you, we were greeted by four buffbots. I set up off to the side to dance basic2 for a few moments while we waited, and immediately saw two lines of healing xp coming in. Fairly soon, I had two or three people watching me while we killed time and chatted about nothing in particular. It was only for a few moments, but I'd managed to catch the attention of a few incoming players with wounds. None wanted buffs from me (or asked, anyway), but all joined in with the conversation rather quickly.

We are appreciated, and this is why I don't think our position in the game is completely compromised as of yet. It's still salvagable. We can definitely find a way to gain respect again.

I'm always glad to hear things like this.

My personal experiences are so different from the norm. I must just somehow attract the players who do appreciate live entertainers, because they're always around when I'm out dancing, and they actually speak up to me about appreciating us. Stories like the above are a common thing for me. That's probably why I've been able to stay so optimistic all this time. Well, most of the time...

We all go through frustrating times, when we question whether or not it's all worth it. And if we're lucky, something happens at just the right time to remind us that it's not all for nothing.
