If i hear another person say "hun" or "hon" i'm going to scream!!!! Why do people say this!? I'm a real life girl gamer and I have never had the slightest urge to say it to anyone in any way shape or form, is it a roleplaying thing? I cannot remember them saying it in the movie...I usually call people "nerfherder". /endofmeaninglessrant

I'm a girl gamer too, but I say it in real life as well so it just carries over naturally for me. It might just come from growing up in the south *shrugs*. I do see a lot more people use it in game than I would normally see though, and, I think its used a lot for a couple of reasons:

Partly because a lot of these names in game are a pain in the backside to type or even try and pronounce in your head, and "hon" or "hun" works a lot better than "hey you" lol.

Another reason for someis due to the closeness of any friendships. Even if you know it(either from being told it or from knowing the person in real life)you aren't going to regularly use their real name in game. So "hon" is just a more personal way to greet the actual person, not just the character.

I'm sure there are tons of others, I guess maybe its just somehow turned into a regular thing. I just know in my case, I use it in game and out

Much anger I sense in you, dear (see? I didn't use hon:smileyvery-happy. But seriously, I think the reason some of us use such terms is a combination of roleplay, an effort to show those we meet that we want to be friendly, and plain old force of habit. I probibly could do rather well without those adjectives like dear, hon, or darling. Then again, I play a socialite, and to me, that's the kind of way I want my character to talk. Not only because it adds some flavour and quirkiness to my character, but because of some real high barriers that we as dancers and entertainers must surmount to do our jobs grief free.

We work in a very hostile environment where tempers flare. Somebody gets killed at the starport, or talked bad to by other players. Often times they end up in the cantinas to heal their mind wounds. They are already in a bad, bad mood. So I try to craft my dialouge in such a way as to be as charming, quirky, and inviting as possible in order to get their minds off of what just went on. Often times, we have to be as charming and cordial as can be with the limited tools we have available. After all, there are enough baddies and potty mouths that these people meet in the simulation, which may make us work that much harder to show people that we aren't out to grief them. After all, we are in the hospitality business. It pays to be hospitable. Could be worse, however, they could be saying, "Listen b1tch" instead of "listen hon." When you think of it in terms of that, wouldn't you prefer being called hon if you had a choice between the two? I would. Can it sound patronizing at times? I imagine so. However, its such a benign and saccherine gesture that most players won't think anything of it.

So all I can say is that I enjoy usingthe terms I dowhen I play Sirii. It is often well received, or at least chalked up to the quirkiness of roleplay. Many ofmy girlfriends and relatives talk this way. Some of which are what you'd call "empowered," and some not so.

And I can also relate to you in terms of speech flavours that irk your ire. I was an 80s girl and I HATED the whole "like totally" mentality.

Southern girl here too... I say hon/hun, more often sweets or sweetie. I've been known to publicly call male guild officers "daddy"... occasionally people get a "pooks" or "pookie" out of me (usually just Dragul).

*hangs head* Maybe my most annoying Southern female saying "You boys have fun!"... I think I might be channeling Scarlett O'Hara sometimes. ><

Diminutive or demonstrative terms are just so common in the South, it's a really hard habit to break and has always just poured over into my gaming/chat conversations. I hope the people I'm saying these things to don't dislike me, I'm certainly never trying to be uppity or snippy.

The terms that tnd to slip from me are 'sweets', 'sweetie', and the occasional 'baby', and that's only if I consider them a friend. I'd never say these things to a relative stranger.

There is one person in my guild that I call 'Daddy'. Actually, I call him 'GooseDaddy' since his name is JGoose I always joke that if I ever needed a pimp it would be him

Then there's one female in the guild I call Sis.

So really, only close friends get pet names from me

A lot of girls have called me "sis" in game. I've never been called that before and it was kind of new to me, but I found it cute. Kind of like saying "bro" I guess.

Whe I first heard how often "hon" gets used I had a good laugh. I live not too far from Baltimore and if you're familiar with the area you know there's a certain type of lady around here who always ends every sentence with "hon." It's pretty hilarious actually. And I was quite surprised how many GUYS use the term in SWG. I mean, it's spreading or something! LOL

I think it's become kind of an SWG slang. I bet if a bunch of us started calling everyone "daddy" or "mommy," and really kept at it, within a few weeks EVERYONE would be calling each other "daddy" and "mommy."

I say hun to everyone in every game I play, I doubt I could type without it. Never had someone make an issue out of it though. If someone doesn't like to hear hun then there is always the /addignore option, although I would only use it for someone being rude or a spammer. This is so much a part of the way I speak, I've never given it a thought or would of guess someone would have an issue with it.

I'm a girl in real life, too... I use "hon" in the game just as much as I do walking around a real city. For me, it's a cultural idiom, I guess...

[Editor's note: I had to delete the "hon" I automatically put at the end of the first sentence. At least I caught it before I submitted the post. ]

I can't stand it when people say "hun". Drives me INSANE. Not because I find it offensive or patronizing... just because it's SPELLED wrong. LOL

I have an alarming tendency to use pet names. Usually it's darlin', sweetheartor love. Sometimes lovey, which amuses people.

I also call EVERYONE "kids". Whether they're older or younger.

When I want to patronize someone, I call them 'sweet cheeks'. LOL

I don't remember using Hun or Hon.... I don't use darlin' etc. I MAY have said Babe, but I dunno.

Most of the issue would be because I'm a northern California girl. Not Sacramento... further north. That whole chunk of state that southern California is unaware exists. :ies:: REAL close to the oregon border on the base of that lovely Lassen Volcano. ::sage nod:: So I be a mountain girl through and through. small town (1500) too. I can my fiance stuff... I know I've used pet names with him without thinking because he does it and I guess I picked it up.

For a long time I used Luv. But I picked that up from a friend too. Drat... I use drat, but that's no pet name... hehe.

Gosh, I can't think of any pet name that I might use..... .... huh. Ah well. I suppose it's not all that big a deal.
