Thread: Help! (Advice needed)

First, I am not a dancer but I'm turning to the dancing community for help/advice. I am a musician and I hang out at the dant MO primarily (that's where the customers are after all).

All this week I have had trouble with a dancer there. The person is running a macro that causes him to smile at me every few seconds. While this is easily corrected with /ignore, the real problem is that no matter where I am, he slowly drifts/dances his way over to me. Every time I move, he turns and very slowly manages to follow me and ends up dancing right on top of me until I move.

I have tried:

1. sending tells but that doesnt help cause he's afk.

2. sending emails explaining the problem.

3. leaving the area so he cant have me targeted. (somehow he still targets me and keeps smiling at me)

Last night, I was in a group and everyone noticed the problem so it wasnt just me. I decided to try something... This is where it gets bad. I stood by the door till he danced over to me. Then I stepped outside and he danced his way outside. Then I stepped off the porch and he danced his way right off the porch. I then returned to my performance in the cantina and he couldnt follow me back in because he was down the step from the porch.

I emailed the person explaining what I did and why and he replied with an apology. Problem is, (you guessed it) he was still dancing right on top of me again today. I repeated operation "Pied Piper" and helped him dance his way outside again. I don't think he's doing this on purpose but it's really drivin me nuts!

Is there anything in the dancing profession that would cause a dancer to follow someone around like that?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sholto

/smile causes you to face the person you are smiling at. Depending on which dance he/she was doing it could cause him to drift that direction. There are several dances that moves you around between flourishes. I try to time my flourishes to keep me in the same area but I doubt this person does that if he's running and AFK macro.

You can try explaining to him that it's the /smile that's most likely the the problem and removing it would help (not only cause less unneccessary stupid afk retard spam... *deep breath* *exhale*... ok I'm better now). If it doesn't change though I'd keep moving his ass outside until he learns his lesson

Wow learn something new everyday I guess …

I don’t know of any follow_while_dancing macro, but then I’m not too good at macros. So very sorry but can’t help you there. I know in old days more sophisticated BoTs used to use a macro to target closest person for group invites, but that only works on the closest target I believe, that’s why they used to have the “sit in so and so chair and wait for invite” as part of their spam. As for being able to target you anywhere in cantina regardless if you are the closest target or not, not 100% sure, but he would have to have /target_you_name in his macro. Like I said I suck with macros but if he actually has your name in it then you should be able to report him for harassment.

I hope someonewith Macro PhD.jumps in and explains this phenomena

I would lead him down the steps, out of the MO, and towards the nearest spawn of voritors or near the water... but that's just me. *dons her horns and smiles*

Targeting you and setting a macro to /smile constantly causes him to turn and face you. This in turn causes him to drift towards you and dance on top of you. I believe that this would be considering harassment or griefing, since he is dancing on top of you where ever you go.

You should report him next time it happens.... or take him out to feed the voritors, hehe. *tries her best to look innocent*

Wow that is some really annoying AFK macroing. I would report him. This is clear griefing.

I agree. And if other people in a group notice it, have them report it, too.

Thank you so much for such quick and helpful responses! I knew if I asked the dancers they would know the solution.

I actually thought about the voritor thing but it would take too long and I wouldn't last a second (CL1).

I'll report it next time it happens.

Thanks again! '

What's really sad is that this "dancer" probably doesn't even know the macro has a targeting command in it. I've met quite a few people recently who were given macros by others (obviously non-entertainers)and when I ask them why they are doing X bizarre behavior their standard reply is....drum roll please.... "I didn't know I was doing that. How do I stop?" About 90% of the time I have to fight the urge to tell them that the way to stop is to surrender the entertainer skills and try combat instead.

There has been, in my opinion, a significant increase in the number of people in the cantinas who although they are actually ATK, the macro they run makes it look like they are AFK. I don't even know how to combat this new "disease" and honestly I don't know if it's even worth trying any more. For every one player I convince to actually be an entertainer 10 more show up with the same annoying macronized behaviors. It makes me long for the days when people would kite DJK several thousand meters to a cantina...

Yeah..I agree with Goldy..it's the /smile. Tell him to remove it and any /targets from his macro. Explain to him in detail..best to put it in an email..that he doesn't need to emote or spam to keep his avatar in game. In fact..if he just can't resist leaving his char in game, tell him to please make himself as unobtrusive as possible. He sounds like he's at least congenial about it..just clueless.

If they are doing it on purpose, they could have it in their macro /smile yourname that way they will smile at you and eventually move towards you without having you targeted. Could be a sick joke, or they really don't know what's going on.

There is a line command for targetting the nearest character and that is probably what is in the macro. I've gotten smiled, winked, waved to death by those before. Very annoying. And the only way to get rid of it is to move out of range, then return and make sure you're not near that avatar.

Well, finally got an answer from the dancer. He took the smile line out of his macro. He says he doesn't know how I kept getting targeted which supports the above theories that he doesn't know macros and probably got his from someone else. At any rate, we're both entertaining in the cantina now and hopefully all is well. He even tipped me for the trouble caused. A very nice gesture. I love it when things work out nicely.

Thanks again for all the suggestions here. You've been a BIG help!

I'm glad to hear it all worked out ok. Btw..musicians are allowed around here anytime..several are permanent residents. Care for a cookie? *points to warm cookies in the plate on the table*
