Today i was playing my new male twi'lek character on starsider. Well i figured being a twi'lek and all i should try my hand at dancing. I stroll up to the local cantina (in a player city mind you) and start dancing. Well after about five minutes the first customer a rather large male humancomes in and sits at a table right in front of the stage. I start talking to him and it went something like this...

Me: Hello welcome to the (insert cantina name)

Him:Hello how are you doing ?

Me: just fine and you?

Him: great now that your here.

Me: /nod thats good (this kinda freaked me out a little bit but i just ignored it and kept dancing)

(about 5 minutes later)

Him: so do you come here often babe?

Me: well... im not a "babe" and uh no i dont come here much

Him: i come here all the time but i never see anyone as nice looking as you

Me: thanks but no thanks i dont uhh do THAT type of thing

(silence foranother few minutesminutes)

Him: ohh god....

Me: what?

Him: your a guy!?!?!?!?!?

Me: well ya ive been trying to tell ya

Him: What are you gay?

Me: No not at all

Him: /shout watch out for re'es he's a guy!

he proceedes to start talking to the customers who showed up more recently about how gay i was and how i was coming onto him. needless to say i soon logged off and hid in the corner.

First off, this is a roleplaying game, which means people play roles. This might not have been getting through his PvP/CS attitude, but it's the case nevertheless. He did not have problems with you playing the role of an alien with tentacles potruding from your shaved head. But he had problems with you playing another gender. Says nothing about you and all about him. He was either to young to recognize a roleplaying game, or a CS style player who never thought about this as something else as slow CS in space, or he plainly was an idiot ( I heard that happens, too *g* ).

That said, you might have reacted a bit smarter. As a female dancer, people will try hitting on you. This is the role you play and the mostly male populations reaction on this. Don't freak. He's playing a role as well. And his role is hitting on your role. Which is perfectly legit.

If you freak when someone is making you compliments meant for your female avatar, don't be surprised when your non-role reaction provokes a non-role reaction from him. If you are uncomfortable with your role and the reactions of the other players, people will notice and be uncomfortable around you as well.

If you don't like people hitting on you, correct them in-character: Slap them if they kiss you, be shy, don't act on compliments. Flirty ? Why not. But stay in character. Smile at him. Tell him you're not to be called babe if he needs service.

Noone cares who you are behind the character. But if you hint at it, you will get reactions to it and you might not like them. So the simple truth is: don't. You can be a perfect female dancer without cybering with guys. And without telling them who you are.

He said he was playing a male twi'lek, though. The other player just assumed he was a female avatar because he was a dancing twi'lek, and then assumed that he must be gay for choosing to play a dancing male twi'lek. When your brain is primarily wired to push buttons quickly, there's not a great deal of room left for concepts like "tolerance" or "wit" or "common sense."

I swear, though, we do seem to take more grief than any other profession. I certainly never get harrassed when I'm playing my fencer or my creature handler. I'm tempted to start dancing with a curved sword in my hand just so people will think twice before trying to pinch my caboose. Maybe I could hire one of the local musicians to fall over and play dead after I pretend to stab him. I could even have a neat Chinese martial arts shout, like "Spear pierces babbling brook!" as I jab the sword!

Guys, read a little closer. He was playing a MALE character. The guy who freaked didn't realize it was a male character at first. Sounds like he could use some new glasses.

LOL, ok, I see, my own stereotypes caught up on me

Then I suppose it was type #3, the plain idiot.

Hint: don't hide. You were right, let him show his immaturity to the world outside.

Sorry this had to be your very first customer. Don't let him hinderyou though! Shout "Slander! Lies! I have screenshots of who was hitting on WHO!!!"

Some people will never crawl out from the rock they were born under. Find one good cantina and stay there. As people get to know your character's personality, they'll come to expect you there and they'll be happy when they find you. Keep in mind, some people think any high school male on the drama team is gay but they still pay big bucks to go seehim when they're starring in a movie 10 years later.

Comments that demean a specific gender, race, or sexual orientation really irk me! (ie in grade school, bully to president of the science club, "you run like a girl!" as if running like a girl was an insult!) There are alotof things one could be. Things like being petty, rude, insensitive, unobservant, stereotypical, and unwilling to apologize when one makes a mistake.

The most disturbing thing that ever happened to me was once I was dancing in a player cantina (not an actual player cantina, this was before cities were out). I got a tell by a guy there name "But-Loven", he said I was the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen. I was a little creaped out but kept on dancing

Great anecdote. Little incidents like this lend a depth to MMORPGs that you just do not get with a single player game.

Ha! Sounds like the ignorant fool felt humiliated that he was lusting after a male avatar and tried to cover it up by claiming you're to blame. Classic moron.

I wish I was in your shoes, actually. Oh, the fun I could have.

"Re'es is a guy!"
"Thank you for noticing. I'm sad that it took you this long to figure it out. Was it because I no longer stuff my pants with a cucumber? Maybe I should rethink that."

"He's been hitting on me!"
"That's a coy way of putting it. On your planet, do people hit on you by listening to your pick-up lines?"

"Are you gay?"
"Oh, sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not. However, I have a wookie friend that may be your type. I hear he keeps himself trimmed, if you get my meaning. I'll send him a mail and tell him that you're asking around."

On one hand, I hate idiots. On the other, they provide so much entertainment for me.

Sorry he ruined that experience, though. But you do have to laugh at someone who just blindly hits on dancers. Come on, laugh. Please?

Love Star Wars, but the few role-players I could find on the servers were outnumbered by powergamers who wanted only l337 l00t and mad skillz. I can't justify paying $15 a month to play a game by myself.
Still cares enough to interject an opinion, though.

*laugh!* You're my hero! That's almost enough motivation for me to make a male dancer. Or better yet, a flamboyantly homosexual male mon calcommando.

LOL!

I am going to remember this quote the next time the whole "males playing females" issue comes up. That's just perfect.
