Thread: A small piece of advice

To all those jamming away, waiting for the day when they can pull out their nalargons and point to their master musician title, I urge you to offer your buffs (if you plan on buffing as a musician) even as you start out as a novice musician.
Too many times do people walk into cantinas and ask "is anyone mind buffing" only to stare at silence (as long as their AFK filter is on). I've made it a policy now to offer my buffs, 10% though they may be (though they're 30% by now), to whoever asks. 90% of the time, they say yes. Our 'weak' buffs are still much better than no buffs.
But the real reason I urge you to do this is, buffing's tough. There are bugs with it. There are techniques to it. You need to learn this as you go along if you plan on doing it as a master. I'm slightly saddened when I see someone pop on the boards proclaiming they just made master and wanting to know how to buff since they haven't done it before. Learn as you go, and you *can* get customers and tips from it, as well as appreciation.
That's all for today .

To all those boogie-ing away, waiting for the day when they can do the jiggly on exotic4 and point to their master dancer titles, I urge you to offer your buffs (if you plan on buffing as a dancer) even as you start out as a novice dancer.

I've made it a policy now to offer my buffs, 10% though they may be (though they're 30% by now), to whoever asks. 90% of the time, they say yes (your mileage may vary, especially since there are more dancers than musicians). Our 'weak' buffs are still much better than no buffs.

Actually, this was advise given to me when the buffs (and my novice dancer) were new in the game. It did give me a chance to test the waters, so to speak. However, those were different times (back at the end of last year- lol). I don't know if it still holds true these days, but it certainly can't hurt (much) to offer a reduced buff. I just wouldn't request or expecta tip . . . . . . .

Eh, no, not really. People buff as a non-master very rarely. I'd like to see more of it occur, especially at Tech III and IV. That level of buffs is still quite useful, even though the 3 minute wait seems to be a bit much for a 10% Novice buff (for me, anyway.)

Scip has a good point. People should be learning to buff as they go along, so they mighthave a mastery of the process by the time they complete their profession.

I have been actually approached for buffs in the Theed Cantina at Tech 2...and when I told the player that they were looking at a 25% buff (20% + EDL), I usually get "It's better than nothing."

Doing it early is only going to make you better at it as you progress through the Tech line and reach Master, when the expectation is usually that you should know what you are doing and not have the risk of messing it up. And, even though it's a light buff as compared to the MD level buff, you can still get a pretty healthy payment for it. (Mine have ranged from 3-10K for the 25%)

I'm actually strongly considering never buffing again. I'm a musician for the fun and entertainment factor of my own game. That doesn't include trying to be courteous to some 15 year old leet who just wants to know when their turn is and then walks away without even a thank you.

I got to Theed last night and set up off to the side to play with my friends. Suddenly I got a rush of people wanting Buffs. I was managing each and working through them, a task that isn't simple when you are playing the Nal and they all have 15 character names that make no gramatical sense. Of 6 people I got two tips, 1 for 7k and 1 for 500. I stopped playing and went out to find other things to do. So I'm not gonna give silence I'm simply going to tell them I don't do buffs. Let them have their buff bots I'm not in the game to be an NPC, if someone else is willing to pay SOE to be a game service let them.

I continue to be completely baffled by how people will stand in line for long periods and pay 20k for a doc buff or go to a med center and beg, plead, and bribe for a heal but think entertainer services are a god given right.

I always offer my buffs (75% now) to those that ask, and usually they're happy with that. However, along the lines lytefoot was going on, if they're rude or inconsider it all they get is a /denyservice, and possibly /addignore if they don't stop bothering me. I hate to do that to people, but some people just don't get it.

Buffing. Hum.

First: Fine advice, by becoming master you should know what the hell you are doing.

Second as I read this stuff:

If I'm buffing people have to banktip _before_ they get an invite or setperform. If they are not willing to pay

I'm not willing to play ( Hehe this rhymes...good start for a "Buff song" lyric ).

From time to time I also offer buffs for "Tip as much as you want". This usually reaches from 5k - 30k per Buff per person. This is only Focus/Willpower without any BE.

With this "Buff Policy" my outcome is quite good, the customers get what they want and me isn't feeling like the crap of this virtual society.

Just my way to do it.

Have fun.

Bye

I think its excellent advice for all skills and can't be pushed enough.

The difference between those people who started dance day one of server and many coming up now is that we all had to fiddle with things the whole way up the tree. And we did. Most people these days grind to master one way or another and they say "now that I'm master I'll learn to actually dance [or fill in other profession]." In doing that almost nodody will ever gain mastery over less used dances, familiarity with lesser known combinations, feel inclinced to spend the time working on timing, drift, moves and playing aroundetc.

This weekend while dancing in Coronet on Bria the band leader told me I should be dancing my highest dance. This was after I had explained I was going to fiddle around and try to make some dance combinations moves involving the less used flourishes of Rhythmic and Footloose. It was nice he cared about my progress he was a cute bothan, but should any of us be too consumed about progress or how well we know and feel comfortable in our profession? If you fiddle with buffing from the beginning you'll probably have a nice routine or two with flourishes and lights or effects by the time you're master, and a customer base already.

Of all the times I"ve mastered Dancer....(um 5 total) anytime someone comes in and asks for a buff....I wait a moment and if no one else answers I let them know that I can buff..but it may only be 10% at the time. I still let them know this and I have had tons of people take me up on a 10% buff paying nearly the same price as a full buff. Not all people...but there are alot out there that will take whatever they can get. I mean a 10% buff is better than nothing at all.

I often volunteer to let dancers and musicians test their buffing on me. Now thatsome of the cantinas are less busy, it's not always easy to get a patron in need of a buff. Since I'm always ATK, I tend to get questions from the other entertainers about how buffing works (or doesn't work as the case may be).

I was fortunate in that I had friends willing to sit through my many attempts to get my buff timer working so that I could figure out how to give the full 2 hour buff in as little time as possible. On my server that's what the patrons want: a speedy, full buff. So I have a different "dance" that I do for buffing. It's not pretty or interesting but until either the process changes or the patron preference changes...

Well said. This also lets people looking for buffs know that we ARE live, and we're not so hard to find as they think. Thus, reducing their 'need' for a buffbot.
