Seems to me that if you feel that you have to go AFK to get this skill it's not something you will enjoy.
Why not play the game as it was intended to be played and get the experience as it comes?
Or if you really want to "g4rind" out the xp get your self buffed up and farm combat xp?

Thanks for all the input folks. Reachwind, you pose a valid question, but I am not sure I have communicated well what my situation is. In my case I am not going for a specific "skill" that I would then turn around and "enjoy" or not enjoy in actual gameplay. It is the Force sensitive skills that will advance me toward my eventual goal of becoming a "support role" Jedi (concentrating on healing etc.). These skills in and of themselves are not very helpful overall, with the possible exception of the combat related skills which are more like permanant "skill tapes" and not of much interest to a non-PvPer such as myself. Nor do they really enhance gameplay so no, I would not "enjoy" them anymore than someone going for that next to last skill box in any profession will enjoy the particular box as much as they will enjoy the status that having achieved it will bring when able to be a Master in that profession.
To differentiate myself more from the average Jedi toon seeker (if this is the "skill" you refer to) I am primarily a Dancer and Entertainer. While it is true that I have picked up some ranged combat skills to help defend myself in a dangerous galaxy, it is also true that I have perhaps chosen one of the most difficult combat classes to farm FS combat experience in. Carbineer is by it's nature a team class and fits my style of play very well, but it is not something I can solo very efficiently with. This is in addition to thefactthat only around half of the available FS skillswill let you convertcombat experience to FS experience. Persuasion, for instance (regardless of its actual gameplay usefulness), is something I am interested in picking up and cannot grind combat experience for its conversion. So, I suspect from your comment, that you may be a combat oriented person who had not really been interested in getting any of the non-combat FS skill boxes, or you would have probably realized that to be the case.
Anyway, I have answered own dilemma, partly in taking this much time to post a reply to your very helpful comment. Obviously I have already been doing the at home afk grind and the fact thatI felt a need to "defend" (I do not mean in a confrontational way, really, your comment has helped immensely) my position means I have landed on the side of "as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, it's OK" side of the issue.

Actually, I have just never bothered with the new quest based jedi system. I did the old method of mastering professions. Didn't enjoy it, noticed that every single friend of mine that got to jedi quit because they hated the game at that point they actually got the jedi.
I still say that if you really want this skill set (jedi FS whatever...) you'll play the game to get it and not take any short cuts.

I pretty much agree with this. I wish afk were not possible in this game. Because, despite the whole "propoganda" about 3rd party programs and how they disadvantage most people...the fact is, allowing this without 3rd party programs is just as much of a disadvantage. By saying, "you can do this too, so it's not a disadvantage" is tantamount to expressly saying, "everyone should just play afk." Because, the truth is, if you don't do it, you're disadvantaged. It's Bullsh**.
However, despite this, I generally don't have a huge problem with the people that do this, especially if it's not around me. Even the afk'ers in the Cantina are not bothersome to me. They only become bothersome when they ruin the atmosphere of the Cantina by spamming or take away the livelihoods of the real entertainers by botting. If you're not doing something that actively negatively affects my gameplay, then I honestly could care less if you do it, nor would I think any less of you for doing so.

I have been a Master Dancer since March on Shadowfire. During that time I have never AFK danced for any reason other than to briefly check on my child at night, get a snack/soda or use the bathroom. Since becoming force sensitive in August (?) I have struggled with how to avoid spending years advancing in force sensitivity. Then I realized I could hide in my home and put up my AFK tag and grind exotic 4 while I am working or sleeping in RL and I have advanced towards my goal a bit more quickly.
Question:If I am not affecting anyone elses game or livelihood (by afk healing in cantinas or spamming etc) should I still feel the "AFK Guilt" that I do?

It's your game. Do what makes you happy. If people have a problem with that; then shame on them.
I don't see a problem with you doing it. I'm sure other may feel differently, but your not bothering me.

I personally wouldn't do it, but the xp conversion rate sort of sucks for entertainers, so I can see why you would. I say go for it. (It's not like you're cheating to gain some humongous edge over other players. The healing mods available for us in the FS line are fairly useless anyway.)

I want to commend you on your decision to limit your unattended play to your home. Thanks for taking responsibility for your game play and thanks for choosing to avoid the venues where unattended play contributes to the destruction of our professions. I wholeheartedly applaud your efforts. Good Luck on your Force Sensitive path! (& get a doc to help you out with phase 1 if you can, I did it on my Doc last week and the plant is a blast!)

AFK is da debil!!!
LOL just kidding Tabi.
Seriously Tabi, I don’t see anything wrong with you dancing in your own house, behind locked doors.
You not healing anyone, you not buffing anyone and no one knows what you are up to in there.
But I think the only way to ensure this wont harm anyone is if your avatar dances with hair rollers and wearing an ugly moo-moo dress.
It’s definitely not my kind of play-style but I also see no harm in it.
Kind of actually reminds me of the old-style AFK before AFK did became the debil, when people used to hide in their own houses or dark corners of cantina hopping no one would notice them.
As for your question if you should feel quilt doing it, well you’re the only one who can answer that question dear.
But please remember, this is a game. I know at times it’s almost hard to believe but yep it’s just a game and as long as your action in there doesn’t negatively effect anyone you should be able to play the way it makes you happy.
So put on some fuzzy house-slippers and dance away.

Traditionally towards this I've felt that if no one other than you can see it or knows it, then I'm keeping my mouth shut and blinders on. Is it a bit hypocritical? Yeah, I guess, because how can you say "it's okay in this location and bad that one." Same thing as the people who say "well lets just let buffbots operate in player cities and not NPC cities!" We know they'll still be just as bad in NPC cities...Though I guess the comparison is slightly different since those bots would still be "public."
But if AFK wasn't so abused in public would anyone ever care or ever suspect? No, of course not.
I've always felt the harm to the profession comes from people seeing and knowing, and if it's just you.. /shrug
But I agree -- I won't stop wanting the ability to do it to go away.

Your membership card to the Shadowfire Entertainers Lounge has been revoked! hehe obviously I am kidding Tabitha. I have never once danced while afk.. not even to go to the bathroom...so my stance on the afk issue is pretty cut and dried. Basically I don't want to see it. Since you are in your home just racking up the xp then who am I to point the finger and say "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"? I've been in groups where other dancers went afk and I didn't point the finger at them.
Now if you become the Jedi Vending Machine
then we'll have to talk.

I disagree with the whole concept, yes, and won't re-hash what everyone's already said on it.
But I can't really find any fault with doing it in the privacy of your own home. I dislike forcing the grind for FS, of course, but I also approve of choosing something out of the ordinary, too.
I say if it doesn't interfere with anyone else's game play, go for it.
