I have been a Master Dancer since March on Shadowfire. During that time I have never AFK danced for any reason other than to briefly check on my child at night, get a snack/soda or use the bathroom. Since becoming force sensitive in August (?) I have struggled with how to avoid spending years advancing in force sensitivity. Then I realized I could hide in my home and put up my AFK tag and grind exotic 4 while I am working or sleeping in RL and I have advanced towards my goal a bit more quickly.

Question:If I am not affecting anyone elses game or livelihood (by afk healing in cantinas or spamming etc) should I still feel the "AFK Guilt" that I do?

You're NOT affecting anyone else by AFKing.

If you look at the math of dancing AFK, unless you're AFK buffing in a crowded cantina, you're actually helping the other entertainers in the band by providing another active member, so everyone else in the band gets a little more xp.

Now if the band you're in turns down a non AFK dancer to keep an AFK dancer, then you're hurting the profession. But I have never seen a band do that, and I've been an entertainersince launch.

Now I know that's not the 'popular' view, but frankly, no one has been able to explain where AFK dancing hurts the profession EXEPT in the case of a buffbot.

There is a LOT more to dancing than exp.

Dispensing the mechanics (either heals OR buffs) 24/7 with no active participation on the part of the "player" cheapens and completely devalues the only resource entertainers are requried to use -- time. You can't say "It's okay for heals but not for buffs!" just because you want the convenience of levelling AFK.

If you're locked in a house by yourself, you're not really dispensing mechanics. Yeah it still technically contributes to the devaluing, but not in the same way and technically no one but the person who does it will ever know if it's kept appropriately quiet.

Go back in time. Look at the history of the profession. Try to take note of when tips for healing declined

Other negative effects of the AFK players aren't illustrated in economic terms, but in social ones. Peruse the AFK thread stickied at the top of these forums, and you'll see both sides of the case repeated several times.

Maybe that's one of those problems that I was talking about that sunrunner just doesn't experience.

In the past week I have recieved almost 100k in tips when I was at the computer.

not a thing wrong with it. the force sensitive XP rate is completely broken for crafting and dancing/music so doing it AFK is not something i have a problem with.

the exchange rate for all professions should be on the same order as combat. one 3 hour play session a day should net you enough XP over the course of 21 weeks to finish the village. if you use that method for dancer/music/crafting you will finish the village sometime in the year 2007...

one other thing... if you plan on actually being a jedi then your better off taking up the combat defense lines and learning how to fight. jedi is purely about combat with creatures and other players.

You know, the main thing i REALLY want out of the whole dang thing is a "free" alt on my server of choice. I wouldn't mind if I could be some kind of combat-able but primarily "support" role Jedi, though. I mean, that is what I do now: support mainly. Even in my elite combat master I am a mainly support position. Carbines, as designed currently can be a make or break role in a team oriented assault, throwing down great suppression fire and laying states on a vast number of foes simultaneously and even setting up dizzy for the melees to KD with. My master marksman just helps that, but my real pleasure derives from my mind healing and buffing abilities as a dancer.

I made a point a long time ago on these boards as to how musicians and dancers should be able to perform in a limited way on the battlefield (think the bagpiper, bardsor drummer boys), and I still think that could be true. I simply do not feel like being the uber "point-man", tank style Jedi. I need to look up more information on Jedi skill trees to see if this kind of back-up support role style of play is even tenable with the current system, but if it is, I'd feel comfortable playing that role. All in all, I am no stranger to combat and definitely have seen my share of cloning stations around our little Galaxy.

I want to commend you on your decision to limit your unattended play to your home. Thanks for taking responsibility for your game play and thanks for choosing to avoid the venues where unattended play contributes to the destruction of our professions. I wholeheartedly applaud your efforts. Good Luck on your Force Sensitive path! (& get a doc to help you out with phase 1 if you can, I did it on my Doc last week and the plant is a blast!)

QFE!

I agree - your private residence is for you to use as needed. Thank you for being considerate of the rest of the ATK entertainer community! Good luck on your path to FS! I'm sure you will make a noble jedi if you are already so considerate of others!

you probably want to go master healer then. healer and... oh i forget the other one that is very support oriented. The grind to GETTING those skills will be all combat (those poor huurtons! LOL) but on one of my servers there is a jedi knight who is master healer who almost NEVER PvP's - she is always in groups using her force skills to heal her comrades and those on the same side of the GCW as her and surprisingly doesn't get attacked much. People really respect her style of playing Jedi because she DOESN'T want to be the "uber l337" pvp she wants to be a REAL jedi that helps people. I say go for it. LIke you said if you don't end up liking it you still have the free 2nd slot!
