Thread: Grovewalking, dancing all over the cantina, on purpose !
Here are some of the tips I give people I was teaching:
- Learn to turn yourself without turning your view. You can use number pad 1 and 3 for this. That is the most important part. You can also do "instant" turns by going from 3rd person to 1st person, immediately turning to face the direction of your view.
- Make a dance card. Yes, I know someone posted a complete one, but make your own anyway. Making the card in a way is more important than having it, as it gets you to really watch the flourishes and learn how they move. Then you can come up with a description that will remind you how it moves. See Sultrina's Dance School for details on dance cards.
- Start with something easy. Formal flourish 1 is what I first learned on. It is just a leap to the side then a leap back. In truth you can use any dance except the exotics. Even popular allows for movement. Lyrical is one of the hardest to use, simply because the path you follow isn't anything like a straight line. My tip for lyrical is remember that no matter where you go in a flourish, a flourish always takes you back to where you started. So even if you do a spin, leap to the side, then step around, if you started 3 steps in front of you, you will end 3 steps in front of you. If you turn to the right, it will still be 3 steps in front of you, but that point will be in a new spot.
- Practice. I can use most flourishes in most dances now, but I've also been doing this for a long time.
- Spend some time doing hand flourishes. Truthfully if it is you calling the shots instead of a macro, it will be easier for you to know where the flourish will go. It's perfectly possible to still work with a macro of course. But at least spend some time hand flourishing. It's easier to pay attention to what you are doing and how you are moving if you call the shots.
- Don't rely on this as the only way to move. There are two others. I believe Sultrina covers them in her dance school so I will only mention them here. The first is intentionally drifting - using the cause of drift to your advantage to move. The second is switching dances mid-flourish. A flourish awlays takes you back to where it starts, but only if it completes. If you switch in the middle of it, the new flourish will take you back to the spot you were at when you switched, meaning effectively you just moved to the spot you switched. The easiest way to do this is do flourish 3 and switch to lyrical at the same time, then after a couple seconds switch to a different dance to take a couple steps forward.
Of course, the most important part is to have fun.
"Sultrina's Dance School" was the first thread I read when I finally decided to complete my dance studies. The information contained in those posts are a must read for anyone new or serious about the profession. While I've been dabbling in the dance profession for months, I didn't realize the steps for each dance had different timings until I printed out my dance card and started making notes. *boggles at her own stupidity*
Thanks for the tips!I'llhead to the theater and try them out tonight.
This is my favorite technique, and the one I work on the most. If you do it right, it will look seamless.

*grumbles* 'yeah yeah rub it in" and moves off to try the step again, and again, and again, and..... ![]()
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only dancer who can't do this properly. But I've set aside all of Sunday afternoon to work on making it look smooth so wish me luck!

Nah, you're not the only one.
I mastered dancer in Sept of '03, and am working on my third time re-gaining my title, and I never, ever could get it right. I was always insanely jealous of those who could.![]()
*great sigh of relief* you just made my whole day!
