Thread: Dancers to be rendered superfluous to game play

I started SWG when I heard I could play a dancer. A dancer, not a fighter who dances. When dancing becomes a hobby, when anyone can master dancer and still be the ultimate combat monster, then we will not have dancers anymore. Then we will have crowds of people who dance "for fun", yet consider it a hobby or a diversion at best. And the content, especially the player made contetn, for dedicated dancers will be very scarce - why hire a dancer if you can just ask your master commando/master BHto dance at your birthday?
Removing SP costs from dancers just means that the people who were not willing to be a dancer, but preferred to fight or craft can now have their cake and eat it. And the dedicated dancers can now play second fiddle, or become some combat/crafters who dance as well.
Now, I play a dancer for fun, not some fighter who dances (not to mention that with 144 SPs and pilot I can enjoy a heck of a lot of content for fighters anyway), and I don't want our profession to become some hobby.
These are good points and I do agree but we have to face the facts also in that many of the dev's obviously don't agree.
In the beginning I was very optomistic also but after dealing with SWG a while and how things come about, you learn that unless it goes into test or live, all talk is just that, talk.
This idea that making it so people want to see you instead of having to see you is all fine and good but its a new concept that isn't in the game. It doesn't exist any place else. Combat people do things because they have to. The visit armorsmiths, weaponsmiths, shipwrights, etc because thats what it takes to effectively fight.
In the past there were the big buffs that made fighting pretty much a cinch but the CU made that go away and there is no way that is coming back. The big buffs also were the main cause of buffbots and any big buff will bring them back. Knowing that, how do you make someone want to see an entertainer?
The system in the past of mind wounds and BF were quite effective but it was always a passive system and once again, that one buff bot could service the entire server.
I really hate having to be the voice of reality here, but you have to take the history of our professions into perspective here. If we are going to be reduced to an RP profession, mainly to provide a SW feel in the game, which truthfully thats what I do anyways, then you also have to realize that it serves the combat people no benefit to pick up these skills. They are not going to stop what they are doing togrind out entertainer so they can beentertainers unless they really have an interest in the field. My guess is that quite a few of the RPers may learn some dance for parties over time, but they are not going to stop what they do for it.
Of course my perspective is from Kettmoor which has a fairly healthy RP population and our band is pretty much booked up. Irealize it may be different on other servers where a limited amount of entertainers are sustained on the current BF and inspiration system. I don't spend my time in city cantinas or do buffs, but I do see the handwriting on the walls with the elimination of BF. I can't help but see that this is going to make an impactby the amount of people who will never enter a cantina againafter that goes live. When this does occur, the company of some combat people who may want to learn a little dance or music to play around with it, if SP is eliminated, will be very welcomed company. They would also be there because they want to be there, not because they want to grind out a jedi or a buffbot for their guild. Well at least on a server with a good RP population...

Also.. superfluous..means in excess..being more than what is needed. I highly disagree with that statement. At the current moment there are way too many dancers. The new patch will do just the oppisite. The profession its self is will not be superfluous, it will become an extra option but entertainment IS needed.
Yes, superfluous does mean that and that is exactly what we are becoming. Pawns are needed in a game of chess. A monopoly race car is not needed in a game of chess. We are being changed from a pawn to a monopoly race car in the game of chess called SWG.
My observation on the Tempest server is that dancers are becoming rare. I go from planet to planet whereupon opening a planetary map zero dancers are registered. I register, I dance, I have no customers. There are very few players seeking out dancers. You really need to see my act before you can determine that I suck; I am not even getting customers in that one time to boo at me. This is more a result of the near zero BF in the CU than it is a comment on entertainers. Now what little BF there was and hence our need as a "pawn" in the game is going away. While I agree to the deepest corners of my heart that entertainment and dancers are needed in swg (for that truly is the primary reason I play) from a game play aspect we are becoming as useful as that monoploy car on the chess board.
i agree with this im a level 80 pure fighting toon battle fatiuge is sometimes the diffrence between winning a hard fight and loosing it as it can have a heavy effect on my heals and although its a anoyance sometimes i like it this way as it means i have to come see you guys every day
now while some of you are happy with the idea that you will get new buffs etc i dont see it in wrighting anywhere from a csr or even dev so for now it is still an idea
so lets just look at it.. from patch 20 till what patch 23 maby patch 30 knowing soe what use are dancers or any entertainer to 70 percent of the playerbase who are full template fighters and require no more xp ... er well i cant think of one sure ill come in on the first day of patch 20 to see you all playing with your glowstics and new animations but what do they amount to there going too pull as many customers as the dancer bots did
all in all in my opinion your being screwed [sorry couldent think of a nicer word] and that this is compleatly the wrong way to do it battle fatiuge should stay in my oppinion permanantly as its one of the things that currently works and the rate of getting it should be increased
the thing i realy dont get is why are you sitting back and not making a fuss about it battle fatuige should at least stay for your sakes till they give you your new buffs to stop you becoming useless for an unknown amount of time
just my opinion and how i expect most fighters will see it
soho

The proposed upcoming changes to Dancer is that the only thing a dancer will be able to do is perform an inspiration buff. Beyond that they will serve no purpose in the game. They will not be able to heal anything (BF being removed from the game).
Oh, yes the toon will still dance around the room and it will have some new prop's etc., but there will no longer be any game play reason for players to watch us dance (except for the near wothless buffs).
Oh, well, sounds like a sad day in toon town for dancers.
