Thread: State of the Dancer Profession 10-31-03
Go Raven, go Raven! ![]()
Heheh...
What I found amusing in her confused post was this:
"Did it ever occur to any of you that a player with double accounts can post 2 votes or post several replies to the contrary of an issue they dont like? (Or for an issue they desire?)"
Yes... she has a point. Someone with two accounts can vote twice. However, they are entitled to two votes, because they are PAYING for two accounts. Whoever pays $15 to SOE gets one vote. If they pay $30 to SOE, they get two votes. Regardless of how many accounts they have... the votes still go to the number of paying customers. In any case.... I think people with multiple accounts make up a very small minority in this profession, or any other really.
Ravenmist,
I don't mean to disrupt your discussions. But I would like something else. I have been a master dancer for a good while now. But I noticed that Exotic1, Exotic2, Exotic3,and Exotic4 have much less than 8 flourishes each. It has become more difficult (not impossible ... nowhere close to that. I am too good, you see?
) to please seasoned customers. I would like to have them so I can introduce more variations to my performances.
If this has been mentioned already, I would like to be noted again.
Thanks,
Qui'lu of Chilastra
Flame me if you must, but please don't repeat the arguement that AFKers annoy you so they should get "nerfed".
Yeah, definately on our wish list. The devs know we want this and hopefully it will happen soon. I'm not sure what all they did during that last mo-cap but I'm pretty sure some more flourishes/dances where included for us, tho we may not see the dances until the expansion but hopefully we'll see the flourishes for our existing dances soon.

Thanks Ravenmist!
I absolutely agree with you that the dancer profession is looking good as compared to some of the others out there. Most of our stuff actually works.

That said, the feature that I would like to see most for the dancer profession is along the lines of what I'd like to see for just about every non-combatant profession in the game. The ability to be truely creative.
I'd love to see a set of very basic moves (step forward, step back, leap forward, spin, etc.) that we could macro together to create our own dances.
The second feature that I'd really really like to see (and I know that there are technical hurdles involved) is couples dancing.
Anyhow, thanks for all your hard work!
Cheers,
Alya Benere (Starsider)
Thats pretty much my dream too. It would be soo awesome to be able to build your own flourishes from the ground up and couples dancing would be so much fun.

I do apreaciate you responding to my ideas, although I think I may have an interesting perspective that you may not have considered. Personally I would like to see the dancer evolve, perhaps granting some bardlike abilities, but that is not my point. I feel there are probably at least as many people who would agree with me but they save their discussion for other forums, in my opinion this forum is dominated with, and please don't take offense to this, "touchy feely" posts with all the /giggles, /hugging, and such. The roleplaying aspect of being a dancer pales (to me) compared with the roleplaying aspects for my character as a whole. Personally I couldn't care less if we get some more flourishes, couples dancing bores me, and constructing ones own flourishes also does not interest me, now I am not disrespecting anyones opinions on how the Dancing profession should evolve over the long haul, and these asthetic features would be a nice addition although they take a distant back seat to granting additional abilities. A very large chunk of this board is interested in the roleplaying aspect of this game, and that is great, but for me to consider the Dancer profession complete it needs a lot of work.
Some quick ideas off the top of my head:
1. Some sort of inate mind wound defensive bonuses as one climbs the wound healing tree.
2. As one climbs the BF healing tree, they gain an additional skill mod that allows for healing BF in Ranger camps.
3. Seriously, let Dancers buff their own mind!
4. Some sort of way for the Dancer to contribute to the GCW other than mind buffs.
5. As an alternitive how about reduced skill point costs, or perhaps a rebate of sorts when one reaches master.

Well first off I'll start out by saying that while it may be true there are many more like yourself out there that don't post on these boards, the fact is theres not much I can do to help them if they aren't posting here which I'm sure you can understand. As far as the rest goes.
1. I like this idea, don't see it as being too bardish.
2. Issue is too divided. The devs and a lot of the entertainment community both want to keep it the way it is.
3. Should be happening eventually, not this next patch but perhaps one or two down the line if/when they get around to changing the buffing/dancing system to allow for it.
4.Any ideas in particular?
5. Devs would never agree to this. ![]()
How about if there is a dancer actively performing in your group, you are partially immune from aquiring BF, this gives us a more valuable role in the GCW and is a comprimise between being able to heal BF outside the Cantinas and Player Structures. Also, I think the answer is known but what does BF do anyways? I have never noticed any drawbacks from having BF, and I have had approx 150 on many occasions. It may be possible to, especially if an active Dancer can shield their group from BF, to increase the drawbacks of having BF. Also, it would seem apropriate to grant this shielding ability mod at (novice +10) (BF healing 1 +10) (BF healing 2 +10) (BF Healing 3 +20) (BF Healing 4 +25) (Master +25) where the mod is the % prevented BF. If this makes sense to anyone please let me know, I realize I am not presenting it in the most straightforward way.
Any takers?

Thank you for posting the state of the profession. You've always done a wonderful for us Ravenmist and I thank you.
I think the AFK debate is given entirely too much verbiage when I'd rather have a "this is good, this is broken this is getting fixed this is what we'd love to see in the future."
I don't like AFK'ing anytime, grind every painful second at that keyboard or do it the right way and live a life with a dancing career. I'm still not a master but I would argue I'm one of the better dancers on the server and choreographers witha lotof theotherbetter dancers and best choreographer in my troupe.
I would have liked more space for how the dancing profession could be more entertaining and have the developers work on that. Perhaps if the profession was more fun and developed the old masters would stay despite griefing, AFK bots some of them MIGHT actually stop AFK'ing, private cantinas would be more supported and we actually start filling out the profession in a way more like musicians.
This last patch had nothing for entertainment barring player cantinas. I'm okay with that and hoping next patch will then give us something good.
I dance ONLY because I like it. I have not regularly danced in a public cantina since August. I do practices and gigs. The fallrate is embarrassing anti-entertaining, has not game mechanics and is just awful. We did a duet on stage with a pirate mermaid song and I danced exotic2 every single time I tried a flourish I fell. Every time. My partner is master entertainer, master dancer and falls too. Its ridiculous and not at all entertaining. And when you do are trying to do a bandflourished choreographed dance and everyone criticals out of a lyrical set then I believe the Dancing profession has failed.
I consider falling to be a much higher priority for me then AFK because it affects anyone trying to perform, because it makes the profession itself look bad, because it is an obviously unequal effect when musicians have no criticals, when there is no game mechanic reason for it since the exp still is there and since its unrealistic to the dancing profession as practiced in real life.
I'm desperately looking forthe commands that will help us choreograph smartly to get away from lag:
/startbanddance
/stopbanddance
/changebanddance xxxx
/bandtechnical spot 1
We try very technical changes, dealing with drifts, lags, technical signals and cover ups etc. These tools would help us and really would do nothing for AFK'ers so it only makes the profession as a whole more appealing and professional
Lack of distinctive dances, we have fewer dances than musicians have songs. The dances we do have are either incomplete with flourishes or have poorly done non-motion captured ones. You addressed this in your post, those of us who follow your hard work at getthing them Ravenmist know we have been promised these. We'd love to know how far in advance to look for them.
Developers need to rework the base dance for Formal and Lyrical which makes us look drunk and inept. All dances should have a base dance with a finished appearance.
Dancing with props, repositioning while dancing, couple dancing, working out flourishes without chopping into our current ones with changesdance command would all be a nice thing to look forward to months down the road. And personally I wish the developers would put their energy into them instead of worrying about balance issues, buffing issues, mission issues and afk issues. But that's a personal opinion.
Thank you again Ravenmist for not only your hard work but your patience with explaining things, collating things and dealing with thread hijackers *wink*
You have got to be kidding if you think AFK dancing is the biggest problem with our profession!!!!
How about fixing the rate of actions costs!!! A person doing music can play for 2 to 3 times longer than a dancer sometimes even more!
How about the fact that most of the higher level dances don't even have all the flourish done!!!
What about the fact that the only dancer who commands the bandflourishgets xp!!!
What about the fact that every other profession can do their craft outside of a cantina or camp!!! Why do all the profession get crafting stations in droid but US???? A doctor or medic can do everything they need anywhere!!! How about a stage show droid with a sound system and lights????
YOU had better take off your high heels and get something done for the this profession!
