Do I like the jukebox? I can't lie. I love the jukebox. It is just the thingfor my academy on class days.

What I don't enjoy is the position the developers have put me in regarding it. Because as much as I love the jukebox, the fact of the matter is, it is a symptom of the very disease my academy is hoping to combat: the undermining of the performing arts in SWG for the sake of "progress."

So to tell you the truth, I really don't know how I am going to handle the jukebox at this point.

If I met one of my musician friends in the cantina and they said "I just got one of those holodancers for my guildhall...." I don't imagine I'd be very happy. I wouldn't carethat the holodancer couldn't heal or buff. My first thought would be "great. one more lifeless box to replace another role of mine."

Do I often wish I had music to use while practicing dance moves, of course I do. But I want that music to be played by one of my fellow entertainers so that it can have the heart and emotion behind it that I try to get in my dances. Last night I spent 2 hours trying to fix one of my dance routines. I finally decided to take a break and try it again when I am refreshed as I was just getting frustrated. Now imagine I'd just spent 2 hours working out some new songs and then I find out my friend went and got a jukebox to listen to. I'm pretty sure the first thought that would go through my head would be censored and the second thought would be to send that friend to the cloning center.

The jukeboxes are a great thing IMHO. They supply much needed background music (I know I have a CD of SW music playing whenever I'm not in the cantina just to kill the silence) and they also increase the "star wars feel" of the game. It would have been nice if musicians had got the songs, but if you think it through you'll realise _why_ they didn't. Flourishes change the nature of the song. I can take a song, and because my flourish pattern is different it will sound completely different to someone else playing the same song on the same instrument. This is good and to be encouraged. There is however this niggling little thing called copyright, and it means that if you take a piece of music not specifically designed for this purpose and change it things get sticky.

Which would you rather? musicians with no choice but to play the SW themes all the way through, with flourishes just being animations and not changing the sound? Or music that can be unique to you?

I think the jukebox is actually going to improve things for the musicians, I have plenty of friends who turn off al the game music (including the player music) and run their own stuff on top. With more ambient music to combat this maybe they'll start listening again rather than typing /listen.

I'm sorry you feel "singled out" or that I am pointing the finger at you - it was not my intention nor were you the sole figure of my focus. I apologise.

My comment was aimed at the general cynicism that constantly and continually permeates these boards. I have been a dancer since launch, and am also sick and tired of the lack of support we get from the devs, and just as weary fromthe issues that are constantly being ignored. I don't beleive we as entertainers should ignore them for the sake of being nice or give up our right to voice our opinions or fight for the improvementswe deserve. But this thread was intended to be a creative brainstorm, to look at the positive uses of the jukebox and how we might be able to turn something like this to our (all entertainers included) advantage. Again I apologise for any offense to people, but my frustration comes from the fact that the original poster was merely looking to start a discussion on creativity, and was subsequently shot down.

I don't blame people (especially musicians in this case) for feeling disappointed and let down by the devs - given SOEs track record, they have trained our cynicism well and we are getting burnt out, if not already. However, it would just be a refreshing change to actually discuss ideas and imagine what we can do without turning innocent questions like the one started in this thread into a hot, contentious debate. Given the heaviness that many real entertainers feel in regards to the number of issues we face- and whilst they are no less important - it would just be a good change to counterbalance all the crap we endure withsomething more positive and constructive to keep our spirits up (or even inspireeach other) bydiscussing/sharing our dance creations and ideas more than we do now and try and keep the fun alive by trying new things.

Bah, I really should have clarified my original post. Live musicians are the VERY best to dance to... but alas, not many exist on my server The only really good ones I know of are in CoE, which I love jamming with them!! They are the best!!

So... the jukebox is my only companion while I wait for another CoE event.

PS - If anyone knows of any other good live musicians on the Radiant server, please send me a PM. I'd love to do a jam session with them.

As a Long time Master Musician, first mastered fully ATK as a Trandoshan no less, back around launch (Took three months,) I feel the jukebox is a nice addition to the game. It offers more variety than the players can, THAT is a who other can of worms, but the loops are short and annoying enough to keep them from replacing player music. In small entertaining groups it frees up entertainers to dance that would otherrwise be babysitting entertainer droids or sounding pathetic without enough musicians. My wife and I have been experimenting with them and have found them to be perfect as part of our entertaining package. We can turn on the jukebox and dance then turn it off and perform live (as a quartet with our droids) and back and forth. It allowsa small 2-3 person group to provide quality entertainment. And as for the holodancer idea, I would welcome that as well. Not as a replacement for player dancers but as anaddition to them.

Additionally the lifespan on the jukebox is so short as to make it not be a permanentmethod of replacing musicians. Those who try will quickly find themselves getting sick of running down to the hotel everytime they turn around to buy more. They lend themselves to situations where player musicians are not appropriate such as malls and other buildings where mood music would be nice but a player would quickly become bored playing music all day with only a few listening and those few demanding free buffs or walking off with their Nalargon/Omnibox.

Just spent last night hanging out with friends onmy Yacht and it was a blast. Took a Jukebox up and my wife and I danced while talking to our friends. Pulled out our entertainer droids and set them to doing foam and dancing jawas. The droid effects are stuck in an absolute orientation so manuvering the ship moves the foam. We placed one near the front of the large room while I piloted the ship through rolls and loops at minimum speed and managed to fill the entire large room with fog/foam and laser lights. Really made for a neat environment.

Y’know what’s really bad? When you promise yourself you won’t post on a topic because you just know you’re gonna shove your foot down your throat…and then you go and do it anyway. So before I begin…

/slap self

Ok. That out of the way, I shall now proceed to shove my foot in my face, possibly make people I like become angry with me, and put my 2 credits into the discussion.

Oh ye, tormenting and tacky wannabe replacement
for a good thing, thy name is "Jukebox."

While I was on my non-entertainer alt, a friend and I went and she purchased a Jukebox. She placed it in my house, switched it on, and we went through all the songs. I liked it, it was neat, it had that “bright and shiny” that most new things have that attract you and make you want to try them.

Two days later, after I had time to think about this new thing in my world, I went, on the same character, and bought one myself. I placed it in my house and set it to “Chamber Music” which is one of my favorites. Many, many times I have sat behind the counter where the merchant trainer is in the artisan guild hall in Keren to grind while listening to this tune. It was nice to have it in my house while muddling about with emails and such.

It did grow a bit old, so I switched it to “Naboo soothing” which I have decided I would like a recording of for my bedtime since listening to it did indeed sooth me and make me a bit sleepy. Ah…running water and ambient music…I was quite happy to sit and listen to it.

That’s just it though. Ambiance. This is what the jukebox provides and it was absolutely wonderful to have on as background noise while RPing with friends in my house. I later went to a friend’s cantina to hang out, wanting very much to hear what other deem as “noise,” that of the sound of live entertainment played by live musicians in a cantina.

She had a jukebox...

I was not happy...

It is her cantina though, so I listened and told myself, “that’s ok…it’s our cantina night tomorrow…ah house band…ah live entertainment…ah no ambiance trying to pretend it is the real thing.” And then I got asked this, this afternoon:

“What do you think of using a jukebox tonight?”

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING, NO!

At least…that’s what I wanted to scream. I realized that the person asking me probably hadn’t used a jukebox, so I tried to be more genteel in my response and explanation. It was after that, that I realized my response to that question was EXACTLY what I wanted to post here…so I am.

They're great for ambient music in a house, but in a place like the Green Room...that'd be like Louis Armstrong saying "hey, instead of me play, lets listen to the radio." There's just something bout a live band you can't replace. Maybe it’s just me, I think it’s pretty tacky to use a jukebox in the cantina instead of a live musician, ESPECIALLY if you have a live musician available.

The concern on the part of the asker was that the usual house band may not all make it and/or would possibly be late. I tried to explain that there are many people out there that actually don't like the jukeboxes, a big reason why I am reluctant to use one. I had one in Deri's house, it does add a VERY nice ambiance, but that's all it is, ambiance, background noise.

It is not and should in no way be a substitute for a band. I'd sooner see one person with an instrument and a playback droid on stage. I don't hate them, I just believe that there is a time and a place for them, and a cantina social event is most definitely not it.

At a wedding? Ok, sure, but use a live band for the reception cause otherwise, that’s just tacky. As ambiance for a private party at your house? You betcha. In a cantina? NO WAY, JOSE.

*tosses 2 credits into the thread and steps off her soapbox*

Thank you.

Just my thought here, take it for what its worth. How about during breaks when the band would like to interact with other people for a few minutes. I have been a musician virtually non-stop since shortly after launch and there have been numerous times where I would like to have the band take 5 so that we could stop targeting our Nalargon's and omniboxes and interact with friends that were on the other side of a crowded room. Don't get me wrong I enjoy playing ATK, just after the third or fourth set of our limited selections it would be nice to take a breather yet still keep some ambient music playing. After all even Louis Armstrong took a break now and then. He did not stand there all night playing "When You're Smiling, Hello Dolly, When You're Smiling, What a Wonderful World, Hello Dolly, Mack the Knife, When You're Smiling, Hello Dolly, Mack The Knife, What A Wonderful World, etc..." non stop fortwo to four hours.

I say these can be a valuable addition to the music and dance professions and not a detriment. And, thank the maker, are they ever an enhancement to Image Design.

Last night, my new guild hosted an RP event at the cantina in town. Someone in the guild chat suggested a jukebox. I said no, and asked that we use live performers. Long story short, I showed up at the event and immediately turned around and walked out when I saw that they HAD gotten a jukebox.

I wasn't going to say anything, because there are people in the guild who don't give a damn about afk macroing and buffbots, or other such things that irritate the blazes out of me. I sent a tell to the person that was running the event and told him that I would not be there because of the jukebox. He was surprised and I explained why I thought the jukebox was an insult to our fine guild musicians. He understood and respected my decision.

Thinking that the conversation went well, I thought I'd take a chance on saying something in the guild chat about it. The more mature members of the guild had a pretty good dialog on jukeboxes, the self-powered harvesters, the upcoming bunker houses, and some of the other changes that happening lately. I think that some people will not be including the jukeboxes in the future. As far as the less mature members... less said about that the better.

Perhaps the jukeboxes have their place, but that place should be AFTER the people who worked so hard and spent so much time learning to be musicians. And maybe those vet reward bunker houses should have their schematic given to the architects. Or maybe I can be given a vet reward of an LLC that's useable by anyone?
