LOL, and we thought the patrons were confused now, just wait!

This is nice for the musicians though - I know many people like to listen to the music. I prefer to listen to the musicians/band and base my dance on the song the are playing.

Wow I was excited to actually be asked for a buff again last night. Now I think I'll decline as failure is a far more likely outcome when publish 24 hits. I didn't sign up to provide complex instructions, tell people "oh don't listen to me I'll overwrite your buff", or tell people "run away, don't stop listening and watching!".

This is absurd, thanks again SOE for thinking things through in a thorough manner.

it does seem overly complex. I like that they get to listen to musicians while getting a buff from me but my experience has been 1 in 5 crafter actually will sit and craft in the cantina. Mostly because they're clicking a billion windows, can't see anything and have trouble keeping up with conversations. Not all of them mind you justsome I've talked to. Most prefer to stop in, visit with me for a bit, chat while they get what they need and then zoom back off to their house where they keep all their resources, their vendors, etc.

This could be good for entertainers who like the idea of a paid gig. Run out to a crafter's house, visit dance and chatter with him while he crafts. Leave after gig is up giving him his inspiration to run on and credits in the dancer's pockets. Or it could be good for those with second accounts to just leave their dancer going while they craft and not worry about losing their buff.

I do not know how happy folks in the cantinas will be.Yes, listen to him but don't stop listening! Yes, watch me so I can give the inspiration but don't stopwatching. Ok you're done now run away! Going to be a lot of reteaching. People use the stoplisten and stopwatch to apply buffs. It was like this for mind buffs too. Its what they know. Others had great ideas of making it so that passive buff doesn't get in the way. Make it ask the crafter if they want it overwriten. Make it so it can't be overwritten unless the entertainer actually applies the general buff. Etc. I'd prefer something like this than reteaching every crafter how to properly get a buff.

I don't even know if I like the idea of a musician and dancer working together to speed up the buff. I like that we can work together and not limit the crafter to one performance but it seriously doesn't take that long in the first place. Do we really need a way to make them get what they need and out of the cantina faster? I have not heard a single complaint about the length of inspiration application. Is this a problem on other servers?

*sigh* You know, no offense to PoetDancer but I had pretty much started saying "yadda yadda yadda" whenever she talked about how complex the buffs are. Given what Red-Dwarf is describing for Publish 24, I'm beginning to agree with her instead.

I know the odds of the devs justifying their decisions is practically nil, but I really wish they'd talk to our correspondents (if not to us plebes) and explain why the stinking general buff has to be a passive one. The entire problem would be easily solved if the entertainer who /inspires you is the only one able to give you a buff.

What Slick said...

They need to make it so the general buff cannot accidentally clobber an active one. The active ones need to be the trumps.

Senom..thanks so much for documenting these changes and explaining them so thoroughly.

So guys..is this more than you want to deal with? Or would you rather keep it? (consider that everything that has changed about us is requiring re-education of other players).

I have a bad cold and am just wrapping my brain back around it all after a couple of days of avoiding anything that requires thought. Let me down some more caffeine.

Slick..I've asked re: the general Inspiration passivity issue. Haven't gotten a response yet. It isn't something I'll be dropping though.

Passive/active... I couldn't care less about that. What needs to happen is, they need to make it so that by just listening or watching, someone can't accidentally blow away a buff he wants and replace it with one he doesn't want. I mean, this should just be common sense.

These changes are more than I want to deal with.

The last thing I want to do is complicate a patron's time in game by having to explain “Yes, I know that it used to be easy as /watch and /stopwatch, but now you shouldn't use /stopwatch, and you need to run away from us to get it to take effect, and guess what, if you think your time is being wasted here and want a faster buff, you can listen to a musician and watch a dancer at the same time, but if either is in a devious mood, you'll either lose the inspiration I just gave you or it'll be replaced by one you don't want, and I know this is complicated and you're getting aggravated because you just want your buff, and I'm sorry, but no, I don't know why they made it this way.”

Speed buffs are unnecessary. I've yet to have anyone complain about the length of time required for an Inspiration buff.

People are used to /watch and /stopwatch. Why make them change?

Ideally, some control would be given to the person receiving the buff so she/he/it could choose what buff was desired or at least choose to accept or deny it. Ideally, a crafter would be able to /watch and /listen to entertainers and choose whether they were listening just for entertainment or for a buff, and not have to worry about that entertainment messing up a buff or vice versa.

I see a great potential for grief, confusion, and hostility inherent in this system. The changes proposed for this are absolutely absurd.

I'm kinda on the fence.

Pros:

  • I do want to be able to work with musicians. I don't know if speeding up applications is neccessary but able to listen to a musician while I dance is better than hording the crafter to myself.

  • I do like that the buff is applied and stays so someone wanting to sit around and chat can feel free to do so.

Cons:

  • Seems easier to mess up the buff you are looking for. Multiple ways to end up with what you don't want.

  • Re-training of customers to not /stopw but run away.

I think I would rather these changes don't happen if its really going to make things more difficult for those wanting to utilize the inspiration buffs. Could leave a sour taste on the process, cause people to skip us or obtain a second account to avoid us. So far I've had very positive experience with the crafters on Kauri. They're excited to try it. They're happy to have found me and come back for more. I think making things more difficult now could put a big wrinkle in this.

I've tried reading Red-Dwarf's notes in the Idiots Guide and I'm just plan stinking confused. Is there like some sort of list of what exactly was changed for me to read instead of trying to scroll and figure out what he's talking about. I know how they work now, I just need to figure out what's changing.

The patch note is:

  • Inspiration buff effects will now be visible as they are applied instead of after you stop listening or watching.

In practice this means that as soon as you start listening then the buff icon appears and it is active - if you have a crafting buff applied that means you can start crafting with the bonuses applied.

I think what is going on is we /inspire someone and they get the buff immediately and can craft from the start.

Yes

They shouldn't stop watching or listening because that does something bad.

Correct

I dunno what.

If you are listening to one musician and watching one dancer then by doing /stopl on the musician the dancer will begin applying a buff automatically and wipe out the buff you got.

Something called a "Speed Buff" is happening somewhere.

If you listen to a musician and watch a dancer you get the +10mins from each performer, so it takes half as long to get the buff (hence "speed buff") but if you want the buff to stick you can't /stopl or /stopw (see above) and have to run away from the performers.

And you can enjoy multiple performances but it could screw up the crafter's buff?

This gets a bit more complicated...

Scenario 1:

You watch one dancer and they /inspire you with a chef buff. As long as they keep dancing and you don't /stopw and stay in the cantina the buff will last forever (or until the hamster's coffee break)

Scenario 2:

You watch one dancer and they /inspire you with a chef buff. You then /watch a second dancer as the first says they are leaving. The second will continue to top of the buff forever (or until the hamster's tea break)

Scenario 3:

You watch one dancer and they /inspire you with a chef buff. You want some music so /listen to a nearby musician. The buff will top up and last forever (or until the hamster's Pepsi break)

Those are the good ones.

Scenario 4:

You watch one dancer and they /inspire you with a chef buff. You then /watch a second dancer as the first says they are leaving but the new dancer is nasty and changes your buff to a BE one (as the /inspire is totally controlled by the performer). You have to then have someone reset you back to the buff you want (which will require another dancer).

Should never happen, all dancers are lovely

Scenario 5:

You watch one dancer and they /inspire you with a chef buff. You want some music so /listen to a nearby musician. However the musician and the dancer are engaged in an "inspiration war" so the musician gives you a Shipwright buff. The dancer then promptly sets you back to a chef buff, the musician retaliates with a Weaponsmith buff and the war continues until the hamsters go home...

Should never happen, but some musicians can be sneaky

Someone help!

Any good?

If I am giving an Artisan buff, and the Artisan /listens to a musician, while I am still giving the buff, does the Artisan Buff turn into the general buff?

As long as all they do is /listen to the musician (they haven't done anything silly like /stopwatch on you) then the musician will build up the buff you are already giving.

It will NOT reset to the general buff unless they use the /stop command.

What we need (and bad time to ask this as TC just went down for some internal testing), is for a number of musicians and dancers come over and play with it:

do you actually find it tough to get the buff you want? Is it actually that easy to lose it? Are you mean enough to spoil someones buff? (ok, the last one probably is no)

I have a feeling that reading it on the forum makes it sound worse than it is.

From my point of view as a performer and a crafter I found it very nice to be able to listen to a performer (ok, so it was my alt playing funk on a mando)while crafting which is something you just can't do on liveif youwant thebuff.

The key is for people to try it out before you pass judegement on it, as long as performers aren't mean and patrons are simply told not to bother with /stopl then I think it'll all work in practice. (to be honest they should figure it out, in the past you HAD to use /stopl before you got the buff, now you have the buff already so you don't need to do it)

And of course - while you are there you could come on my Y-8 tank and we could take down another ISD

I'm happy to do this, if I know where to find people. The couple of times I've visited test center recently the place has been completely empty. I even tried visiting the waypoint I had to the old correspondent's PA hall from way back when, but it was a bare patch of ground.

Where's everyone hanging out at these days so that we can find other entertainers to test with?

The best place to find people on TC is tcpa. It is the server wide chat channel that most people listen in on. the command to join is "/chatr join swg.testcenter.chat.tcpa" (watch the spelling, there have been numerous chat rooms created recently because of mistypes)

The most popular cantina remains the one in New Unity (player city 2km NW of Theed) but there have been more hunting groups recently running out of Tombstone on tatooine (near bestine) but I haven't heard of as many entertainers setting up down there.
