Thread: The new flourishes, what ever shall we do about them?

I was busy with my harvesters last night so I only took a minute to look at the new flourishes. I'd have to say that while they're not as fluid as the previous set, they aren't as bad as I was imagining based on the initial reports.

I'd agree with bn-ny, that the biggest problem is that the frame count of the animation is off a bit. My complaint was not that they looked bad so much as it looked like my toon was hopped up on Caf. I can't see doing a /flourish;/changedance;/flourish series with these new flourishes, but I wouldn't come down hardand say I'd never use them at all.

Oh and falling and action reduction. I'd like to see that eventually addressed.

It was addressed in my first letter actually.

I think the mission payout nerf is worse than this and needs to be fixed ASAP

Good point Mivora, this will definately be something I'll include in the next letter as well. I'll rank importance based on what the community feels, but thats going to be a different thread I'll post after I get a response on my first.

For this thread please everyone, stick to the 2 questions I asked, and also feel free to add any comments, good or negative about the new flourishes. Thanks again everyone!

I meant by the developers, Ravenmist.

I read your notes.

I'd like them to eventually redo the new flourishes so they look like a person has the anatomy to do them and I'd like the "developers" to address falling and action cost.

Keep up the work Ravenmist, thanks.

I actually like the new flourishes, just need to work a bit on the timing.

Ahh, Gotcha. They keep promising to post the response (once they do we should know where we stand on both of those) .. maybe Holo will today since Q is out of the office. Some big holdup from the people up top apparently, dunno what this crap is about but its getting old waiting.

I also really liked the new flourish 5 for formal. Performed it in the cantina last night and actually received a few compliments, like "ooo, that was neat" or "what was that?". As for the other flourishes...hmmmm...I'm undecided. They're not as bad as I thought but they do need a motion capture or something to make the moves more fluid. But, I would prefer the devs to work on the other issues that we've addressed right now (i.e. action pool especially at master level).

Thanks Ravenmist for all your hard work for addressing these issues and our concerns as a dance community.

P.S. Just out of curiosity why is formal 2 only given to Master Entertainer and not Master Dancer? I really enjoy performing this during slow songs but just wish the "basic" formal between flourishes was a little more fluid.

First off, pretty much every dancer I know on Ahazi is severly disappointed with the new flourishes, but I think that's getting redundant..

The only flourish that seems workable is the twirling-ballerina flourish for Formal. All it really needs is to be slowed down just a tad. The new Poplock flourishes, however... people beg me not to show them off for the curious newcomers who haven't seen them yet. At the least it gives us entertainers a chance to cry together. The most unfortunate part is I've heard dancers say that because of them they're thinking of giving up the profession, which hurts me to no end.

I think we just need to change our Top 5 list to "New motion-capped *good* flourishes". That might make it specific enough for the devs!

And Jennith, good luck!!

Thanks Priall!!

I submitted my offer to them via the feedback form and checked it off so that the person in charge of reading Dancer e-mails gets it. We shall see. Probably nothing will come of it, but at least I tried. I know there's probably worse things in the game to fix, put I offered in case they want to do future motion captures.

I have barely started with my dance character, who I thought would be my main. Instead my chef is my main, mostly because I made my dancer Avatar look like me, but I couldn't handle watching myself bumble around with the newbie dances when I know I dance better than that IRL. It's very disheartening to think it doesn't geta whole lot better. I still think a dancer will be fun though, I'm just going to make it a Rhodian or something that doesn't look like me.

And what's with master dancers falling almost as much as newbie dancers. I know from real life dancing that you actually don't fall as much when you get better, or at least you are better at covering it up when you do. In this game, I seeadvanced dancers in gamefall down almost as much as newbies, and they have no chance of making it look like they meant to do that.

But I suppose that's a whole 'nother thread.

Roll back to the flourishes that were implemented at launch.

The new formal flourish isn't bad.

The new poplock flourishes? All I can say is my stomach churns each time I accidentally hit one of those flourishes.

To see why I don't like this, do the first four flourishes. Watch where the feet (Or other body parts) contact the ground. Notice the character's movement matches this, even through all the funky moves. Now do the new flourishes. The feet move, and the body moves, but the movement of the feet doesn't seem to match the movement of the body. In essense, the character appears to just slide across the ground, like in games where the walking animation isn't synced up to the movement speed. Compared to the look of other dances, it looks awful. The worse is new flourish 5 or 6, I think it is. They are trying to do a sideslip move it looks like. There is such a move in that dance style, but they missed all the subtleties that it just looks awful instead of impressive.

Ravenmist,

By all means keep the new flourishes!

The chief complaints about the new flourishes are "they look robotic" and "they do imposible moves with the body"

I played with them a lot and I belive the "robotic" look is due to the fact the flourishes are playign back to fast, prime example flourish 8 on formal looks like swan lake in a mosh pit. I also belive until this isue is resolved we can't truely judge the quality of the flourishes when we are watching at the wrong speed. The second thing I see is it almost apears that the legs are positioned like we are dancing on a slope leading to the odd apearance of our bodies. Once the tempo is corected we can critisize such things. For now please do push the tempo isue as it seems the root cause of most of the problems and until fixed we can't move forward on anything else.

Sultrina, you hit the nail on the head. I can't really evaluate the moves myself because they don't match the tempo of the dance. Some of them might actually be really cool were they performed at the correct tempo by a real person.
