WE ARE NOT SOCIAL PROFESSIONS!!!!

CHEERS!!!!!

I am a performer. I perform. I don't give a damn about your kids, your job or what color nail polish you are wearing. I think Friends was a stupid television show & I never watched more than one episode (and that was only under duress). If I spend any length of time talking to you it is either because I genuinely like you or I'm telling you what an ass you are for contributing to the destruction of my professions. I have plenty of friends in& out of gameand I enjoy socializing with them. I enjoyed socializing with them when I was playing a TKM/Pistoleer/Smuggler. I enjoyed socializing with them when my main character was Architect/Artisan/Tailor. I know how to make friends. In fact, I'm pretty good at it. People seem to like me & I don't know why as I think I'm quite a b!tch. But I don't dance or play music in SWG to be social or make friends! It is a challenging creative outlet for the performer in me in the context of a game that I can get up & walk away from whenever it freakin makes me angry! I'm sick of the devs & other players thinking that we all just want to sit around and chat while our avatars flourish aimlessly through tables. I've had it up to my ears with combatters thinking that we have somehow coerced the devs into forcing them to go to the cantinas so we can bore them to death with chit-chat. And the last thing I would subscribe to a game for would be content for a virtual chatroom!

I love that whole "freakin chocolate orgasm good" thing..can we (tm) that?

Ok, this may not be jonny on the spot...my wife is a master dancer and musician, and is working on ID.....but I think that if you want to make the social aspect more appealing, factor in some kind of mind bonus that would require pushing a button every 10 or 20 seconds or so. Like with crafting or surveying, this could work by encouraging people to be at thier keyboards, and combat players would prefer to get the 250 bonus from you since you are at the keyboard. Just a thought......

I just think people have no idea exactly what the phrase "social profession" means.

I've actually been thinking about this lately, weird..

I think when WE think of "social profession" we think of it as simply a foundation to encourage socialization. Pretty much like Panthu described, and that while we aren't necessarily talking ourselves we facilitate other people to socialize with our game mechanics. The "social" part referring just to the fact that it's people and service oriented versus blowing-crap-up oriented.

I think when non-entertainers think of "social profession" they think like what Esharra said. A bunch of giggly, annoying teenage girls standing around the bathroom gossiping.

I don't want to be the latter, yuck. But I do want to use performing as a basis for the former.

/shrug, I don't know how to make people adjust their mental definition of social profession though.

Sociable
1 : inclined by nature to companionship with others of the same species
2 a : inclined to seek or enjoy companionship b : marked by or conducive to friendliness or pleasant social relations
Social
1 : involving allies or confederates
2 a : marked by or passed in pleasant companionship with one's friends or associates
c : of, relating to, or designed for sociability
3 : the interaction of the individual and the group
4 a : tending to form cooperative and interdependent relationships with others of one's kind

I think it's the name "Social" profession that does it to us though.

We are not any more Sociable then others playing this MMORPG simply because we are an ID, Entertainer, Dancer or Musician.

The main thing that all MMO's try and do is listed under the meaning of social. If you have friends/associates, relationships or have common allies in regards to goals in the game. Then you stick around longer.

Now I do agree that part of our design was with the intention that our game content and mechanics and environment and tools should have made it easier to socialize. But we can see how well that worked.

I just think that the term "Social Professions" carries certain notions and ideas with it that only build up barriers and the whole graphical chat room image.

I am a Dancer, a Musician, merchant, and Entertainer. I just want to be looked at, treated like, and thought of like I am those professions. Instead of the label of "Social Professions" and the negative image that places upon our great and very unique professions.

When I think of the term Social Gameplay, the things that come to mind are anything and everything that is not Combat Gameplay, Crafting Gameplay and Vending Gameplay. (This is not to imply that the four cannot be mixed up...)

I think these four sum up all different types of gameplay.

Also, for the record, imo, Social Gameplay does not necessarily mean positive gameplay... a character may be anti-social and still partake in Social Gameplay.
