Thread: The Ideal Cantina
Aside from the size and sound thing, I've got my ideal cantina.
It doesn't allow pets, no AFK entertainers, bartender on duty, kinda seedy place, and any fights that break out have a reason instead of just because someone got "pwned". And theres a bouncer there to make sure people stay reasonable.
Anywho...
Battles yes. Sorry but it wouldn't be SW without cantina brawls.
Players ganking overt entertainers? Bad.
Suggestions for cantinas: Don't make them all the same. Why are cantinas different on the outside but the same on the inside? When I started I expected the Naboo cantina to be different from the Tatooine cantina and different from the Correlian etc.
Have a stage or an area for the band and/or dancers.
Have a /lean emote for the bar attenders so you either stand or sit or lean on that bar but don't sit on the floor cos no-one (unless your a student) sits on the floor of a bar.
Conversations outside should not be audible. Conversations inside a cantina - distance of audibility reduced. /shouts still audible to most.
Whispers can be used as /tells or have it as an emote but if you want to keep a dodgy deal on the quiet then /tell them.
All laser fights/brawls should result in a brief cut in the background chatter atmosphere. I would not stop the band/dancers because of potential significant disruption.
Lead entertainer of a group should have the option of banning pets OR pets above a certain size not allowed (cos it's getting stupid having a rancor running around the cantina and not canon as far as I'm concerned).
NPC singers /unique musicians available in certain cantinas to add novelty - under control of entertainer leader.
Drunk dancers to be encouraged!!!
Oh and definatly gambling ....
I mostly have my ideal cantina. www.nova-militia.com Glitter Pit
I have rules, I have a decent setup. I have amazing entertainers and a full roleplaying staff, a place of intrigue that isn't too popular, and a good server community to draw on for gigs and visiting talent. No Droids, no Pets, no military weapons. Duels are roleplayed only and have to make sense. No street performers, no afk, no macro, no underwear, no lapdancing, no cybersex. Seedy and classy patrons, floor shows, a great band and everyone has ideas. Cooks, bartenders, bouncers and servers. Limited hours and more than enough roleplay. I recommend everyone think about what they want and see it as a possibility, then try to make it happen. I'm very lucky.

About sitting on the floor...
When sitting on a chair, the back of the chair blocks the 3rd person view, so you can't pan all the way around. If you sit on the floor, you can get that 360, so I usually just sit on the floor- because usually the angle I want is almost directly behind me. I would sit on a chair if it didn't block my view....
combat in cantinas, i have to say i don't really mind it. it can turn out into some interesting RP scenarios. i remember the first time i saw combat in a cantina while dancing, i instinctively did /prone and crawled under a table, behind a chair, much to the amusement of several others.
My favorite RP moment: We were dancing in Coronet and the cantina was busy with adventurers seeking to rest up while a large group of entertainers did our thing. Suddenly, the sound of blaster fire echoed in the entry hall -- all eyes went to the entrance, where a fighter ran into the middle of the cantina, severely wounded, an Overt Imperial on his tale. As she finished killing him, she pronounced a very official-sounding sentence for his "sympathy with the rebellion".
Then, she turned to us and said, "The rest of you will report to Headquarters if you know what's good for you. It's time we cleaned up this nest of vipers."
Then she left. I don't know if she heard our applause at the performance, but it was fun to watch ![]()
Well, if you agree that fights should be allowed to be in cantinas then you might also agree that people should be able be hit by stray gunfire. =) Cenged (sp) clothes ... frayed hair. =) After all, that is realism.
Regards
We're not talking about realism, really, we're talking about roleplaying. Removing all possibility of combat in the cantinas removes certain roleplaying possibilities.
Witness some of the responses in this thread. The person who gunned down a person and then admonished the people in the cantina. The person who throws themself to the floor and crawled under the table. I want to see more of that sort of thing, not less.

Just a couple other thoughts...
Holo-Chess - Put a couple of these tables in.
Gambling - Why not allow a player to work for the Cantina. If there are a couple "interfaces" availble, let a player pluck down 100k and run a table of Roulette, or Cards (i.e. blackjack) and actually be the "house" or dealer.
Once a player puts in the "house funds", (/opentable blackjack 100000) they are locked until the game is over. It would work per table, and would not work if someone is afk. i.e. The dealer would have to "/deal" or "/spinwheel" or /givedice <player>.Patrons can come in and join the game.
The "dealer" can choose to leave at any time (/closetable), other then when a game is "in-progress". Once bets are made, the game must complete and the payoff completed as well.
I suppose it can be done with NPC "Vendors" run by players but I prefer the human interaction, and the chance to really win or lose, as opposed to a "house" with unlimited funds.
Ok, Ok, I am on a roll - someone stop me....
Clothes. We are tired of Underoo's performers, and we don't want "clothing decay" AND Holocron wanted a way for Entertainer clothes to take damage (since we don't fight) SOOOOO...
How about clothes give bonus to Performance XP (mentioned above). Players who buy clothes will eventually get a return on investment becuase they will get more Performance XP, and thus more Credits when turned it. The tailor will get business from the performers, becuase there will be a turn-over in clothes.
Make all clothes worth the same XP bonus though, so we don't have everyone wearing the same thing. Set the decay on items based on how many items are worn, so a one piece item will decay at the same rate as a 3 piece outfit. Therefore, a tailor could price itemsat differentvalues.
As the entertainer gains performance XP, the decay of the item goes down. This will generate a turnover in clothes, boost business for tailors and reward performers for using differant, new clothes.
Bye bye Underoo Dancers. ![]()
I liked your first post and the second one but you lost me on the third.
I am not interested particularly in any way to make the City public cantinas successful. I think they should always be considered of less importance and second rate to player run or owned cantinas. It is a player driven economy. Entertainers only really participate in that economy when they get out of the public cantinas and into private paying gigs with other staff generating and losing income.
I think the game is too convenient as it is, experience too easy to come by, gaining master of a profession (any) too quick, and goals too easy to achieve. And I don't play 12 hours a day, have mastered anything or have achieved everything I want to achieve. Right now I am a casual gamer.
I think the game is set up so that casual players can have tons of fun and don't need to worry about reaching uber anything. The game is not more fun at uber level. Linear goal oriented gaming for anything is always going to be ultimately a let down.
That being said, I find the suggestions Aartemis has made about the dependencies in the public cantinas complex and intriguing. I think that we need to support the Chef class any way we can. That it is a HUGE money sink and should be in the game. And his scheme has some good elements to it that I think would be interesting to implement in the public cantinas. Perhaps combined with good ideas others have as well.
For public cantinas: I think having an npc dancer you must pay to get healed by makes good sense. First of all its always there, so it takes away the "patriotic duty" argument of being their afk to heal their friends or town. Second it trains players, new players and non roleplaying players to associate entertainment with money. It forms an economic link in their mind through necessity, ease of access and repitition. That means when a live entertainer walks by them they will hopefully be more inclined to treat them with respect as someone who does something they "regularly" have to pay for.
So have a few npc entertainers scattered around in the bar with the other npc patrons (appropriately dressed I hope...)The entertainers will have a credits for time and dance option so if there is a lot of healing to be done it will have to be used a lot. That solves the issue with everyone needing healing at odd times. It also solves issues with players that do NOT want to interact and roleplay. And it still gets them in a cantina.
I have no issue with an entertainer needing to register in a public cantina. I think that is a very good idea actually. It can tell people if there are live players in the cantina first of all and its more realistic from a professional standpoint. While I really enjoy the fact that I can make dancing xp anywhere, while waiting at the starport or shuttle or in the wilderness, I would be willing to give that up. Limiting dancing xp to a cantina, hotel, house or campsite would not severely inconvenience any dancer or entertainer. Its probably 95-99% of the places we dance anyway, certainly for xp. I do not mind the idea that a new dancer or any dancer can walk into a cantina, register as a performer and earn their experience there perhaps for a small minimal fee from the cantina paid for by an npc manager or just given by the system after each hour or so.
If a dancer received 250 to 500 an hour it would be a huge bonus to a novice new person. The rest of us wouldn't blink an eye because we already know ways to make money, but again that isn't the intent. The intention is to encourage new entertainers and sustain them with performing LIVE in a cantina.
If you go afk or macro through long periods then you automatically unregister and do not get paid, nor are shown as live on the map. Not a big deal I would think for AFK macro people. They can still do what they do now. But they are not encouraged to do so and the game is set up to help and support those who are live.
Encouraging chefs and bartending. The main problem I see with this is a chef that comes in, uses the bars resources and makes drinks he then sells out of the cantina or keeps for himself.
I DO like the idea that food and drink give a bonus to healing inside cantinas and private buildings (that are also cantinas). I do like having gambling available for people but think that in and of themselve creatively done they can draw people inside.
I'll have to think more on the proposals Aartemis suggested there is a lot there.
For Private Cantinas:
Better floor plans to allow for stages, customizable bar setups
Ways to change the interiors with colors
Wallhangings, neon drink signs, art, rugs mirrors
zoned rooms for conversations so you can be in a room and not have the whole cantina hear you
Lighting options and mood for the cantina: Dark, Medium, Bright, Smokey, Candlelit etc
Bar furniture: taps, barstools, bars, booths, gambling equipment for pc use, stages, floor and track lighting, curtains, bandshell, lamps that work,
ability to see drinks and food and show emotes eating and drinking,
ability to lean against a wall or table or bar or piano
Ability to customize flooring
Allow more items for publicly declared buildings, trying to decorate a cantina with furniture AND stock a kitchen and bar is incredibly restrictive
Ability to post signs inside the place to serve as menu's, rules, warnings, certificates of health, message boards, etc.
more utility customizing the outside signs
Give us lockable doors so we can have real storage rooms and places closed up for RP reasons
Give us the ability to "tip" furniture and objects for rp bar fights, roleplay etc.
Give us the ability to stack things.
Give us more options for side rooms like the public cantinas have, in our private choices.
