Thread: Red Light Districts in Player Cities
We already have red light districts -- that's those private cantinas that dot every server calling themselves "Gentlemen's Clubs" and such. I'm fully confident that when player cities go in, we're going to see several who dedicate the whole city to the arts of pleasure. Fine.
I don't like the fact that the Devs are sticking that name on the option arbitrarily, though. They can call it an "Entertainment District" if they want and then the players can determine the real tone of activities there without having a seedy label stuck on them if they don't want it. Leave the final decision to the players instead of giving the impression that only brothels will work for this bonus.
In Anarchy Online, the Entertainment District included a couple of bars with lurid neon signs outside depicting half-dressed female body parts, but of course they were empty inside and it was all for atmosphere. If they can do it, so can SOE.
As a male dancer, I would be interested to see the sort of treatment male dancers would get for dancing in a "Red Light District" - *yuck* I hate that name too... says interesting about the Devs.
Hey, since TC went back up, I've been in there a bit more and SlickRiptide had his info right on part of his post. A 'part' of a city doesn't get zoned, actually. It's an all-or-nothing for the whole city. They're called "City Specializations". The entertainer cities happen to be called "red light districts".
I do think it's probably not visible to other players (except those who actually bother to read the politician skill tree). Also, my half-baked memory served me incorrectly on the entertainment bonus, it is 10%, not 20% as I previously reported.
I still hope the name gets changed, though...

Update on this one, we got them to change the name. Don't ya'll fret none. No way me or Slick would of let them put something like this into the game.
Thank you to both of you for getting this changed!
I can't tell you how much something so little would have impacted many of us so greatly in the game because I'm sure you are already aware.
You two get the cookie of the day award for this, to each your very own cookie! *laughs*
As a note to everybody else: what I've seen suggests that the various "bonus skills" are city-wide. I don't know if they're exclusive or not. From the sound of it, they are. So a city can be *one* of:
Manufacturing Center: -10% crafting assembly failure rate
Research Structure: +15% crafting experimentation
Clone Lab: -20% cloning cost
Stronghold: +50% defense bonus to militia members
Improved Job Market: +20% mission payout
Medical Center: +10% medical healing effectiveness
(Arts District?): +10% entertainment healing effectiveness
So each player city can possibly be *one* of these things. Based on that, a skilled mayor is going to try to find the task that's right for the local city. Research Structure is a no-brainer, but if the whole world is full of those, it's not a very exciting world. I could see improved job market, clone lab and the healing arts being popular on the tougher worlds (especially if clone labs reduces insurance costs), and stronghold being popular in the high PvP areas.
Depending on how city growth and the like works, I suspect that we may end up with clusters of "cities", rather than solitary large cities. You need a large one for shuttle services from all accounts, but if you can have smaller cities around the edges providing various specializations, well, that's interesting. We'll see what happens.
Oh, and of course the specialization could change as time goes on. Need more crafters? Specialize in crafting to entice them to the area. etc. etc.
Just wanted to point that out so people would understand that it's unlikely that a city will *have* an arts district and more likely that it will *be* an arts district. (Or whatever they change the name to.)
And thanks again, Ravenmist! Red Light District was... way way too much.
You know, it's people like you who make me think maybe I should drop all my dancing skills and never look back. Gee, thanks.
Ummm why do I make you think that. Because I don't have a squeaky clean image of the Star Wars universe? Because I preferdark and grittyness?
