Thread: Fighting Back Buff Bots Any Suggestions?

Devika I misunderstood... I so often see Dancer referring to other entertainers a Friends and the Customers as.... Well as Patrons.. like they are sheep lining up for their buffs and being good little sheep.

In some ways I look at Dancing as a challenge.. The social aspect if great and thats why I play in the first place. But theres also a challenge to making a living in the game world using your wits alone.

Obviously a Bot can buff. So buffing is not something that takes a great deal of thought of effort. but making a living as an entertianer Without buffing.. Thats a bit more of a challenge.

A lot of people get upset at me for rasing some of these issues.. And I guess we COULD all sit around in here and tell each other how wonderful we are and pat each other ont he back and raise our self-esteem.

But then. I've always been more interested in self-Respect than in self-Esteem. Even Murderers have self-esteem. And im sure the buffbots who make good money buffing have great self-esteem. But self-Resepct is based upon living UP TO the standards you set for yourself. Not in simply feeling good about whatever you do.

In the early days of SWG there WERE no buffs. We could only do ONE thing in terms of game mechancis...heal Battle Fatigue. Yet most of us made good livings. We did it by Entertaining people.

Somewhere along the line we seem to have forgotten that and a lot of the new people never knew it.

So I'll keep ON raising the issues. Not just to argue with people, but to get some few of them to see that being ATK buffbots is not our function in life. I dont buff or at leastI do very infrequently. Why should I when there is a buffbot standing across the room that will do it better, faster, cheaper, more reliably and be there 24/7.

What I do is entertain. Just as I did before there were any buffs. And in THAT area i dont fear buffbots at all since thats NOT an area in which they can compete with me.

People in here have gotten SO focussed on buffing that the forget that we're an ENTERTAINMENT Profession, not a Buff Profession. And if it takes rattling some cages and upsetting some apple carts to get people's eyes focussed on something other than buffing... Hey. I've got thick skin.

Here's an idea, albeit an expensive one. For those of you fortunate enough to have two computer systems and two accounts. Just post a spare character at the buffbot and set up a macro that continually invites the buffbot to her. You can shut the bot down that way. I know this isn't practical by any means, but if enough people can shut down some of the buff bots, it will make a dent that can only be fixed by seeking out live entertainers.

Unfortunately that would get construed as griefing at some point. Currently, afk macroing is completely legit and supported by SOE. (Do a search in your holocron for AFK macro or just search for article soe7030) Technically what the buffbots are doing are not against the EULA since they have found a way to use the ingame macro system to do it.

I was able to write the entire macro including drinking/eating to keep myself buffed so I was able to prove to myself first hand that what buffbots are doing are not againts any rules. **I'm not supporting them in anyway, in fact I think they cheapen our profession but that's not the point, the point is they are not using 3rd party system, they are using SOE's system**

Just like summoning driods or pets, or using any other tactic that negatively effects another persons gameplay, setting a character to continuously invite wouldget you reported forgriefing. It's not worth you getting into trouble.

"I don't charge for buffs. If you can afford to and want to, go for it! If you choose not to, that's ok too! My role is to be an entertainer and have fun, credits are the least of my concerns."

Devika, that was my point, too. If I choose to enjoy the experience of being a dancer and not focus all my time on getting credits, then it's a much more enjoyable game to me. But I most certainly don't critisize others for charging for buffs if that their gig. It just isn't mine.

As for buffbots, I said it before and I'll say it again - they are an exploited loophole that someone found and implemented. No harm in exploiting a loophole. I'd have done it too if I'd have thought of it. But I enjoy the atk experience too much so it's not for me.

I hope I didn't come across sounding like I critisize those who do charge for buffs, I was actually making a point that you don't even have to charge to make a lot, just be at the keyboard. Very sorry to those who may have misinterpreted what I wrote.

long time not talk. but...

You can't trap a buff bot that way. People report it and we just add you to our ignore list. Then you cant invite us any more.

/addignore playerName

I actually just ignore any entertainer that I see in the cantina. That just stops it ahead of time.

Not trying to get anything started here, but did I just read that correctly?

Wow! Actually discriminating against anyone who has an entertainer tag. I never thought I would hear something like that, especially since we can't buff ourselves.

Oh well, I would never miss the "service" anyhow seeing as how I have never used, let alone been a "Buffbot".

Other bots could learn so much from you...

My local buffbots were all offline the other day. I think they were attempting to prove that live entertainers couldn't keep up with the demand, or they were attempting to milk supportive emails from the playerbase. Either well, everybody in the cantina that wanted to make some cash that day pulled in quite a few tips and had a good time. Too bad they're back again. Guess how much our players are making now? And those ones that I'd never seen in the cantina who came back when they heard the word? Gone again.

I want to find a way to destroy these little things =/
