Elegance, style, and good defensive abilities. Fencer, all the way.

I'd go with Fencer because of the dodge ability, which makes it harder for things to hit you.

The swordsman counterattack is better than the fencer dodge, because you counterattack just as often as you dodge, but with counterattack your next hit is almost undefendable.
The thing with swordsman, and the same with pikeman, is they have very low melee/ranged defenses. Counterattack, block, and dodge are all secondary defenses. TKA and Fencer both have very high Melee and Ranged defense, and also have high secondaries. Defensive Accuity for TKA, which will either dodge, block, or counterattack when you are hit, or Fencer which has dodge.
Pikeman and Swordsman are arguably the best PvE professions, commando *might* be slightly better simply for it's pure damage output, but Pikes and Swords come close, and have better defenses than commando.
Fencer is a very solid PvP profession if you get a good stun baton, and TKA is your all around awsome profession.
Look at my template, it is mostly a PvE template but it also makes me more solid in PvP than I otherwise would be (I still get wasted by TKA and Fencer but otherwise I pwn all
).
Masterswordsman, because I simply love swords so much, and TKA 0/0/0/4, which gives me a combined melee/ranged defense of something like 94/70, which is pretty good. And if I get some stun armor only TKA will be a problem for me.
So just go with what you like, and be sure you have fun with it. TKA right now is the most solid combat profession, having the second best defenses by only a very small margine, and having one of the top damage outputs of any profession. Also it is the most versitile melee profession, with pleanty of very good special attacks. It is a good choice.

My character travels light, so TKA was the way for me. Also you can hide a VK in the stuff you wear better than a pike or Sword. I use Novice Brawler certed "Dancing" Dagger to hold in my dances, as it simply looks nice.
