I don't know if this even belongs on this forum, but it's something I believe is a threat to us all. I don't mean buffbots, or AFKers, or JTL.

I believe Jedi are the single biggest danger to this game.

[I don't think it's the Jedi, it's how they've been integrated into the game as a whole and the unlocking methods which have, for the most part, favored the worst possible playstyles you'd want in that role.]

In a week or so, the final Jedi publish will happen. This publish will make the path to Jedi more understandable and more rewarding. I expect to see many many more Jedi in the coming months, and I don't know about your server, but I already see Jedi everywhere. On my server, I'm more likely to run into a Jedi in the world than a master dancer.

[If you call grinding 155 million weapons xpand then setting off to kill a laundry list of large beasties with a training saber, no specials and no armor rewarding...The quests are kind of neat, but it's more of a time-consuming, mindless grind than it ever was. The only differencesare there's no need for profession hopping but the actual grind has increased.There may be an initial jump in numbers depending on how much the post publish 9/pre publish 10 unlockers are compensated, but other than that I expect there will be fewer and fewer new jedi. Older jedi have been quitting in disgust so the actual numbers may well drop.

You've probably always been running into these same jedi, except after publish 9 the high ranking are permanently overt, and all are wearing those sackcloth pajamas that pass for robes for the force pool and regeneration bonuses since they can't wear armor anymore. The unrobed who are trying to keep a low profile will still be carrying a saber because they can be jumped at any moment.There's alwaysthe folks who just can't help themselves from swinging the glowbat around starports, but these are actually a minority albeit a highly noticeable one.]

Originally, the concept was to keep Jedi rare. That is obviously now tossed out the window. Jedi no longer suffer any form of permadeath, just exp loss (which for a Jedi is probably easily recouped). In PvP there is no competing with a Jedi, so I expect everyone who enjoys that part of the game to aim at getting a Jedi first and foremost.

[200k per death may not be much for those at knight level, but it would take me five hours of grinding. It's NOT easily recouped for the great majority.(Oh, it would be if I chose to exploit at the squill or geo caves, and that should have been fixed a long time ago. Not everyone exploits, and jedi haven't been the only offenders at these locations.) Ranged professions are weak against high level jedi due to saber blocking, but there's no jedi template that can stand up well to melee, and jedi simply cannot compete with stacked melee templates. Until now force run hasbeen the "I win" card when a high level jedi with that skill could run at near the speed of a swoop while attacking, but publish 10 fixes that imbalance. Contrary to public opinion, Jedi are far from pvp gods.]

I fear the world will become stratified into "Jedi" and "Those who are Not Jedi". And about half the population will be a Jedi. Or more, over time. The fact is, there are no downsides to being a Jedi, and pretty much no risk left. The only thing holding back the tide was the frustration involved with becoming one, and now that too is being removed.

[See above. It's going to be even more frustrating.]

The fact that Jedi are not rare is kind of a bummer all on its own. The fact that all other combat classes will become obsolete in the new order is also a bummer. You can be a master fencer, but in a world where Jedi are around every corner waiting to kill you, you have no chance and the only option left is to become a Jedi yourself to compete in PvP.

[If you are a master TK/Master Fencer/Master Brawler you will have no trouble owning jedi, or at worst make them flee if they have force run 2 or 3. Again, you need to blame the system to get it changed -- not the players.]

The worst part, though, is the Jedi's independance from the rest of the game world. They don't need crafters, they don't need entertainers, they don't need healing. They are apparently self sufficient, and in a game world that promotes and requires a player-driven economy, when half the population no longer needs the rest of the population for anything, that economy will suffer a collapse.

[This was more true before publish 9. After it, jedi are far more dependent upon other players. Most jedi cannot heal battle fatigue as this is available at only the master healer box, and few will spend the points there since it's not a viable template for pvp. Most can't heal wounds at all for similar reasons. There is no innate buffing ability. Jedi still need clothing, foods, spices, mundane weapons and armor if they're not at the point wheremost of their normal skills have been released.]

I see a black storm on the horizon bigger and far more worse than the hologrinding. What once was the most mysterious and cool profession of the game will become the norm and, in the process, destroy the game itself.

[I don't think it will become the norm, it's still way too difficult and time consuming for that. The real black storm is the grind is far from over, and if anything it's being intensified. So what if you don't need to do the profession swap, players who want jedi will still be dead to the rest of their game while they grind.]

Why am I posting this? I'm kinda hoping someone here will say, "No, that's not the case and here's why." I'm sort of looking to my friends here to put my mind at ease. Please tell me I'm dead wrong.

Has anyone heard anything more about that supposed buff crystal on TC?

Was it a reward for one of the quests? Which one if so? I barely registered when I read it the first time. It can only be used like once a week or something, right?

I've just been reading the .TRE files for pub 10 and I found this...

buff_applied You feel infused with the crystal's energies.

have_buff This crystal is unable to enhance your abilities any more at this time.

reuse_time Time before next use

timer_not_up the crystal has not recharged yet.

use_special_effect Use Crystal

and from a guide

--- Phase 3 ---
Capture Enemy Leadership
Quest Giver: Captain Sarguillos
Task: For this quest you are asked to raid an enemy base and capture its commander. The base is defended by a strong shield, turrets, and a horde of enemy sith. In order to enter the base you must disable its shields. To do this you must go to the base and gank NPC's outside of it in order to obtain frequency codes for the bases shields. There are actually a number of bases and codes and you will have to find the right codes for the right base. The Captain will give you a remote device to turn off the shields when you hand him a frequency code. You can also locate waypoint datapads that will give you waypoints to the differen bases (again you must give these to the captain). After opening the shields you will need to kill 5 enemies in order to have the enemy commander spawn. You must then break your way into the base and "capture" the commander (he has a "capture" radial option). He will then follow you and you can take him back to Aurilia. It is not recommend that you leave him behind as this can cause a mission failure. The commander offers you the opportunity to do this as a partnership with one player lowering the shields and the other capturing the commander. If you do this you will get a bonus reward item. The following is a list of known waypoints to the enemy bases (from a post by meGunnett):
Alpha Base = -2932, 738
Delta Base = -1721 -4684
psi base = 1311 1219
nu base = -1017 -2873
theta = -1977 2234
eta = 4072 -1402
tao = -1680 1703
Kappa = 5315 -1145
Mu = -1092 2343
Lamda = 5315 -1145
Iota Base= 700 750 thanks to Aryeth Rahn
Kappa = 5315 -1145
Mu = -1092 2343

FS Branch Reward: This quest unlocks the Combat Prowess: Melee Accuracy branch.
Item Reward: If you do this quest all by yourself you will receive a uniquely colored crystal. If you do it with a partner you will receive the color and a tightly focused crystal. The latter gives a +900 mind buff that lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. It appears to be infinitely reusable and has a long reuse timer (due to timer bugs on TC we're not sure how long that timer is).
(another thread says that you can use it every 4 days.)

K, we wanna ask that this go away?

Scouts had one they got taken out (could creature harv w/o scout), so we might have a shot at getting it taken out if we want to. Do we want to? I don't usually ask to take stuff away from others... but, we kinda have a precedent here with the Scout thingy.

Do we care?

My personal opinion? If it really is a reuse time of only every 4 days or greater, and arguably, only a percentage of the population will have one, I don't have a problem with it. But, I'll go with what the majority goes with.

OH...with the caveat that each person can only get it one time. Even if some people buy it and end up with 10 crystals, if a character itself can only get one, that's fine. If people can do this over and over again, and everyone and their mother can get enough to supply themselves with buffs allatime...then, yes, take it out.

I don't know... I mean if it can be traded or given or sold or dropped... then yes I think we should make it go away. If no then I don't really have that much of a problem with it. But it could be a problem in the future aka toe in door for giving BF/buff stims or something to CMs ("See we have the crystal and it hasn't caused a problem I don't see what harm it could cause to help out our poor combat and pvpers by giving them some other way to get healed/buffed when they can't find those pesky entertainers.")

If it's limited to, say, a once a day use or less, then I suppose I don't care too much. I don't wanna take away people's interesting loot items that give them minor perks.

Slightly off topic but i have a question...

Apart from the names of places, alien species, a few npc's,and the few rp'ers trying to make the game "Star Warsy",what has SWG got to do with the movies?

I quit UO to play SWG because i love Star Wars, but tbh in the month that i've played there hasn't been one single moment that i've felt like i was in the Star Wars universe

Look at the chars around you. How many have stupid names? I can practically guarentee you that the nearest wookiee will be called FluffyBum or WookieeNookiee or something stupid like that.

I've even seen a wookiee with a female human sex slave....Yeah, very honourable...

I've walked into medical centers to see an overt imp saying to an overt reb "Okay, your turn to kill me".

Star Wars combat is mainly withranged weapons (in the movies), yet every person i've spoken to has told me "if you want to pvp then you have to have a melee skill, preferably two".

The sad truth about Online games is that as soon as you factor in "real players" then the intended feel or theme of the game is ruined...unless you have a shard/server/galaxy where every single player is a roleplayer (but that will never happen as there are people who would join a rp server just to "grief" rp'ers)

As of now i am seriously considering cancelling my SWG account and reopening my UO account. UO may be a crappy game, but i don't care...and i have friends there. I do care about Star Wars and hate to see other players ruining it. I will miss the few friends i have made in my short time playing though.

Useless bowcasters and professions that require specific weapon types make Wookiees sad.

maybe instead of having this(the crystal or whatever it is)go away, how about we try and negoiate a way to use this to enhance our buffs, wether it be us use it, and it adds an extra ammount to our buff, or the person holding it (or using it) gets the bonus.

it is another suggestion as opposed to getting rid of it. if that cant happen have it go away .

Not sure how I feel about this. On a gut level, it "feels" marginalizing especially if it's a mind pool buff only since that would preserve the value of musician-applied focus and willpower buffs but give a means of avoiding dancers.

I agree... there's not much actual Star Wars feel to the game, especially where PvP is concerned. I have hope that most of the game mechanics will be corrected in the combat revamp, though I might be too much of an optimist. Even then it won't make the players behave more "Star Warsy". My suggestion would be to find an RP guilds that seeks to make the game more "Star Warsy" and tryto immerse yourself into it.

I don't think you'll find an online game with atrue Star Wars feel, short of a text based MUSH that isn't afraid to ban those who can't follow theme. Even then you'd be lucky to come across one that really captures the feel of the universe portayed in the movies.

I'd rather wait until I hear more details. If you could get as many as possible, that'd be awesome.

I will say that I find the fact that any rewards, whether it be the scout survey device or this mind buff crystal, which provide the benefit of another player in-game to be a very disturbing trend to start. I question why anything that replaces another professions' function in the game was even allowed to get past the brainstorming sessions. That's just me with my finger over the panic button, though.
