Entertainers entertain. If someone entertains you, tip. If they don't, don't.

Nobody HAS to tip. Period.

It's nice, I appreciate it, but I don't ask for it. I do all right. Enough to buy clothes and whatever.

Sure, I'm providing a service to pretty much anybody who cares to watch me, I don't get to really pick and choose and sometimes I sure wish I could. But ya know, a tip is just that. It's tacky to ask for 'em, tackier still to beg for 'em and most tacky and to *demand* them. If you insist on tips, you shouldn't dance/play until they've paid you up front.

So no, Original Poster, you really don't have to tip anybody you don't want to.

TIPS, stands for To Insure Proper Service. If someone is not giving good service why would you tip them? No one is ever obilgated to tip anyone, unless they feel the service deserves it.

Rortt, he was a jerk and does NOT represent the majority of Dancers. I wouldn't have tipped him either, except perhaps some advice to "get some clothing".

I had to laugh that he actually tried to tell you going naked helped his regen. What a crock Selfish, juvenile, moronic ... sounds like this guy had it all going for him.

You did the right thing.

I try to tip the "professional" entertainers as much as I can afford, since they really are not doing great money-wise. I usually do not tip the people not really trying (players in their underwear, afk players macroing, etc...). Yes, entertainers often get shafted with funds, but if they're not working hard at their profession, like everyone else does with theirs, then they can't really complain about not getting rich.

If the guy you were talking about was wearing armor, then he was obviously a fighter character, and could go get as much money as he wanted doing missions. I usually don't tip the fighter-characters who only picked up entertainer "on the side"

Just out of curiosity how do you determine who is an entertainer "on the side?" S'Man'ta has a number of title opertunities, just one of which is "Novice Entertainer". It just happens to be how she got her start. As a roll player, I try to remember to remove my title when I log in, but that doesn't always work, especally if I've had to restart for some reason or other.

When I dance, I dance. I try to greet every one that comes in, if that's where I'm dancing, or interact with those that have chosen to sit at the table I'm dancing "on" (Okay in. It would be on, if I could stand on it.) I try to remember everyone I've met before and try to entertain the regulars as best I can.

Does that mean that if you've seen me at mission terminal in my Chitlin finding someone stupid enough to pay me to kill gnorts (S'Man'ta has incredibly expensive taste in clothes, and tips being what they are these days, has had to take a second job)in my off time that you're not going to tip me when you next see me working my grove at the cantina?

To answer your question, I distinguish between who is taking their entertainer role seriously and who is just passing time while they heal up between fights by using common sense. I know, I know, its not a very popular method in the online gaming community, but it's still the way I prefer.

If someone runs into a cantina with a drained HAM bar, has a title like bountyhunter, pistoleer, or Teras Kasi Artist, pulls out a slitherhorn, and plays that damnable Starwars 1 until they're healed, then runs back out to fight some more without so much as saying a single word to anyone, then yes, I will make the assumption that entertaining is not their main passion, even without "proof".

If like your saying you yourself make an effort to greet players as patrons, interact with them, and dress in appropriate clothes to really play out the part, then I applaud you. In my opinion you are a great Entertainer and you could expect a hefty tip when I visited you. Whatever you do outside the cantina is your business. I play both entertainers and medics on other servers and I am not naive enough to think that any player could support themself on the generosity of players in general. Clothes, instruments, and especially housing do cost quite a bit of money and very rarely have I ever received enough from tips to live by.

Mainly what I was referring to in my previous post was the way the one player in question was begging for tips as if he needed it. When I entertain I never ask/beg/mention tips, yet I always do my best to thank individuals who do tip me. I would also readily guess that you do not beg for tips when you are dancing, as doing so is not in very good taste in any situation.

BTW, I also have that same problem with my titles that you have. I alway try to set mine to No Title, but everytime I log in, I always have the title Novice Musician above my character.

bah i only tip those who actually greet or say something nice to me. that's what i think the entertainer's supposed to do rather than simply staying quiet and play his/her instrument or dance the whole time without saying a single word. no AFK's or nekkid dancers on my tiplist. it's nice to see a thank you message after i tipped em. this ensures they get more tips in the future... oh yeah, i really hate dancers who punch me when i /wink or /smile at em

After 3 days I already have a reputation for dropping my clothes and dancing semi-naked. If you don't want to tip naked dancers, don't. I don't dance semi-naked for tips. I just do it 'cos it's fun. Those who are bothered by nudity (or even semi-nudity) are the ones with the problem. They need to grow up and join the adult population.

It's undies night at the cantina tonight!

Oh, and just because I dance semi-naked, it doesn't mean I don't take my job seriously. What has clothing (or lack of it) got to do with making people feel good. Some folks like fully-clothed dancers, others like 'em half naked. I do my healing just as fast naked as dressed, so deal with it. Takethe heals I give you <FOR FREE>, don't tip me, but for heaven's sake stop whining about how I choose (not)to dress.

The reactionary nature of some of these posts is incredible. Semi-nudity is NOT bad, and anyone who says otherwise is immature at best. Grow up folks!

Theres nothing wrong with using clothing creatively.

Wearing underwear is not using clothing creatively. It is a shortcut. You want the fancy revealing clothes, but you don't want to work your way up to be able to afford them, or to get on the good graces of a tailor. It's unimaginitive and overused. If you really want the half naked look, there are much more exotic, creative, and even more revealing clothes out there.

Thats whats wrong with underwear. When I was experimenting with tailoring, I made a pair of white shorts to try on. I destroyed them because they looked too much like underwear.
