Although, now after Reachwind's response, I did realize I do have a real pet peeve word. That word is "hon." I clearly know that it's irrational to have irritation over that word. And, I know that most people who use that word don't mean anything bad by it. I can tell when it's meant as a way to be snarky, and I can tell when it's meant to be a true term of endearment. Nevertheless, I really hate being called hon. Despite the fact that I know it's not always meant to be so, it always sounds condescending to me. And, the odd thing is, I know there's a somewhat large population out there who also hates the word hon being directed at them by a random person.

It's sort of like when someone uses the word, "um" in a post where they're disagreeing with someone else. The word "um" can merely mean a pause in thought. Yet, at the same time it often automatically sounds like a word or phrase used with a condescending attitude.

So, if it were up to me, I wish people would stop calling me hon. It's just my peeve even though I know it's not meant how it sounds to me.

I totally agree. I have always been annoyed being called "hun" by people who don't know me. It does feel condescending. For example,

Unknown waitress talking to me at a restaurant: Hiya hun, what can I do for you?

Me: Um, I guess I will have the Diner Breakfast.

Her: No problem, hun, would you like bacon or sausage?

Me (getting annoyed): Bacon.

Her: And would you like white or wheat toast, hun?

Me (getting really annoyed and grinding my teeth): Wheat.

Her: And how would you like your eggs cooked, hun?

Me (screaming): I am NOT your child, stop calling me HUN!!!!

Ok, well, I don't actually scream, but I often get close. And by the way, the word "hun" always means a lower tip for any of you who wait tables.

I have to admit I am the worst when it comes to the "teh" typo. So that doesn't bother me as much - wasn't even aware it was part of the 1337 secret code until very recently. But I too hate when people can't be bothered to type full words or sentences. It's Role Play - hello, it's even in the name - and taking these short cuts just kills the whole moment.

Am I missing something? I thought that "leet" was just sloppy/quick writing. When you are actively converting words to numbers, what are you accomplishing?I feel so old!

When creating passwords it's better to use a combination of numbers, letters and characters. It was from this that the 1337isms reared their ugly head.

ex: p455w0rD instead of password.

Back in the earlist days of the internet a group of jovial sysadmins would post messages back and forth using p455w0rD talk.

Then a bunch ofscript kiddiesstarted using the language to look cool and very clever, too -like they all have super hacking skills, when in fact the last thing they hacked was a stubborn box of Cheerios.

And it all just caught on, because everyone wants to look cool and seem like they're Neo from The Matrix. Then it got carried away, and mixed with text message speak, and it just became a horrible representation of the English language.

Chyann, In my opinion the only thing they are accomplishing is leaving many of us scratching our heads. The term used to be Elite, but that was too complex and long so it became Leet (rather than Lite which would have been a lot funnier). Then someone decided it would be really cool to use computer "code" too so it became 1337. But I'm far too square/old to follow that jibberish. I usually just start speaking in French when they insist on talking to me in code.

hacking a box of cheerios..... Going to take a while to clean my computer screen after reading that one. My side still hurts from laughing.

When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.

Rest assured, you'll never hear Lilo or Tral referring to anyone as "hon."

I used to hate it when people used it, for exactly the same reason as Chyann, but I've gotten used to it over time. Now I find it...quaint. The one that really bothers me is "dear" the Walmart here recently hired on a cashier who consistantly calls everyone "dear." I can't help but think ofThe Wizard of Oz every time she says it. I'll get you, my dearie--and your little dog too! *shrugs* She's a nice old lady, but the thought still comes.

Here's an example of 1337 done up as a RP, I can't read his posts, because it gives me headaches just reading them.

I posted on this before but hehe, aww, hon, etc I use all the time in real life! Growing up in the south, it is very much ingrained in the culture here, so it translates over to the game. I do try to avoid over using them though. But, when I'm busy with a dance routine or something else in the game it is very easy to fall intousing them too much<.<

While swg has a huge range of emote options and the like, it still is hard to convey things like a simple smile. And, I try to avoid going into "emote mode" where I use so many emotes it starts to feel like spam...although I've been guilty of that too (usually when playing with the boy ).

But, meh, I use all those but mix them up with other stuff too. It is often pretty easy to tell when someone is forcing using those and when someone is just naturally using them. It is the forced use of them that can get annoying (at least to me).

Oh, and I positively hate leet speak too. I have done the "teh" thing more thana few times, but only because of an honest typo, not some intentional mangling of the language

I took have an irrational dislike of the word 'hon', I think one reason is because I have found in my experince its one of those words used by guys playing female toons in an attempt to sound convincing. As an actual real life girl I have never ever called anyone 'hon'... I hate 'hun' even more...

but dont get me wrong i use 'spazzy girl talk' (to quote panthu) all the time... i use hehe when i'm chatting in msn or email with my friends... i over use elipses too...but i pause when i think of what i'm gonna type so i put them in my messsages... probably drives people crazy

I could have written that story in five minutes, but it would have taken me five hours to translate it into that abomination of the language. I pray it was written as a joke and the poster doesn't actually write that way.
