Thread: Giggle, Hehe and Aww (and Hon)

Although, now after Reachwind's response, I did realize I do have a real pet peeve word. That word is "hon." I clearly know that it's irrational to have irritation over that word. And, I know that most people who use that word don't mean anything bad by it. I can tell when it's meant as a way to be snarky, and I can tell when it's meant to be a true term of endearment. Nevertheless, I really hate being called hon. Despite the fact that I know it's not always meant to be so, it always sounds condescending to me. And, the odd thing is, I know there's a somewhat large population out there who also hates the word hon being directed at them by a random person.
It's sort of like when someone uses the word, "um" in a post where they're disagreeing with someone else. The word "um" can merely mean a pause in thought. Yet, at the same time it often automatically sounds like a word or phrase used with a condescending attitude.
So, if it were up to me, I wish people would stop calling me hon. It's just my peeve even though I know it's not meant how it sounds to me.

I have to admit I am the worst when it comes to the "teh" typo. So that doesn't bother me as much - wasn't even aware it was part of the 1337 secret code until very recently. But I too hate when people can't be bothered to type full words or sentences. It's Role Play - hello, it's even in the name - and taking these short cuts just kills the whole moment.

Then a bunch ofscript kiddiesstarted using the language to look cool and very clever, too -like they all have super hacking skills, when in fact the last thing they hacked was a stubborn box of Cheerios.
And it all just caught on, because everyone wants to look cool and seem like they're Neo from The Matrix. Then it got carried away, and mixed with text message speak, and it just became a horrible representation of the English language.

I totally agree. I have always been annoyed being called "hun" by people who don't know me. It does feel condescending. For example,
Unknown waitress talking to me at a restaurant: Hiya hun, what can I do for you?
Me: Um, I guess I will have the Diner Breakfast.
Her: No problem, hun, would you like bacon or sausage?
Me (getting annoyed): Bacon.
Her: And would you like white or wheat toast, hun?
Me (getting really annoyed and grinding my teeth): Wheat.
Her: And how would you like your eggs cooked, hun?
Me (screaming): I am NOT your child, stop calling me HUN!!!!
Ok, well, I don't actually scream, but I often get close. And by the way, the word "hun" always means a lower tip for any of you who wait tables.

If i could only go back in time to clobber the jovial sysadmins over the head with a dictionary, to stop the evil before it started.
Here's an example of 1337 done up as a RP, I can't read his posts, because it gives me headaches just reading them.

I took have an irrational dislike of the word 'hon', I think one reason is because I have found in my experince its one of those words used by guys playing female toons in an attempt to sound convincing. As an actual real life girl I have never ever called anyone 'hon'... I hate 'hun' even more...
but dont get me wrong i use 'spazzy girl talk' (to quote panthu) all the time... i use hehe when i'm chatting in msn or email with my friends... i over use elipses too...but i pause when i think of what i'm gonna type so i put them in my messsages... probably drives people crazy

I could have written that story in five minutes, but it would have taken me five hours to translate it into that abomination of the language. I pray it was written as a joke and the poster doesn't actually write that way.
