Thread: Opinions about men dancing?

I once played a male Trandoshan that was 7'6" tall and as ugly as they come. I was going for brawler/medic, so I hung out in the cantina a lot healing the entertainers for medic experience. Sometimes there would be more medics trying to heal than there were wounds to heal. To help out my fellow medics, I trained novice entertainer and would macro dance all night after I went to bed, just so there would be someone else to heal.

Now I'm here to tell ya, there is absolutely NOTHING sexy about an overgrown lizard dancing. But, amazingly enough, I still got tips. Not many, but a few. So don't think that just because you play a male dancer, you'll never get tipped.

Also, don't think that just because a guy is dancing, he must be gay. There are many reasons why people do things, and not all of them meet the eye at first glance.

A small dent in the tips? I only made 300 credits up to master dancer as a male. As a master I made alot from buffs, but just for dancingI got squat.

Not sure what your doing wrong because a good male dancer can pull in just about as good of tips as a good female dancer.

A bad male dancer however gets pummled in the tip department compared to a bad female dancer.....

Raven, I love ya, but I hate blanket statements, and I'm not entirely sure where the basis for this comes from. It's a known fact that the largest demographic for online games is still young males. It stands to reason that a young male will usually prefer to watch and tip a female.

I know for a fact that I make far fewer tips than my female friends. I'm generally ok with this, as I like to believe that it's not because of lack of skill or lack of ability to socialize, and more about the way my sex is viewed in this profession. Your statement tells me it's because I'm a bad dancer. Maybe I am, but my gut (and the comments I do get from people who do actually interact with me and don't treat me like some kind of freak) tells me I'm not, and I'd like to believe them.

So. From the perspective of a male dancer who has walked the path...I will continue to warn people interested in being a male dancer that it can be a hard road paved with derision and lack of reward, but that it can be fun if you can find it in yourself to look above all that (and find a second career to support yourself).

On the other hand if you ever see a male walking around with the Master Dancer title, who is not an AFK Macro holocron grinder but an actual full-time professional dancer by choice... you have really found something. I've only ever seen ONE on my server. I have to tell you, I respect the guy. I know what he had to go through to get it and that it was much harder for him, playing a male PC who dances, than it is for me, playing (and roleplaying) a sexy blue twi'lek female. I sort of took the easy way out... "Dancer? OK, female character..." It's challenging in some ways to be a male playing a female in general, but I think it is way easier to play a female dancer than a male. Which is why I have tons of respect for people like Pickles and Taiga, who are skilled dancers of the male toon variety.

Stupid board ate my first reponse so let me try this again.. OI.

I guess our experience is different on this one Pickles, from my experience the guys can indeed make almost as much and in some cases even more then female dancers if they are really good. However one thing I should of included and didn't is that it really depends a lot on who your audience is. Each circumstance is different and on some servers its going to be a lot harder then others to find a venue that has enough people that can respect or appreciate a male dancer.

In general a guy is going to have to work a lot harder for his tips then a woman, I think thats a given. I still stand by my statement however that "a good male dancer can pull in just about as good of tips as a good female dancer." However I should of included, "given the right environement in which to perform."

I appologize for not making my first response more detailed and leaving something important like that out. I sure dont' think your a bad dancer Pickles.. I've never met you but someone as dedicated to dancing as you appear to be couldn't be a bad dancer by my estimation. I guess its all a matter of finding the right spot and on some servers that spot may not even exist for all I know. However, I will say this in reguards to the guy that said he only made 300 credits all the way to Master. If that really is the case I don't see how he couldn't of been doing something wrong or not trying very hard.

So basically, if a guy wants to make tips dancing he needs to shop around for a good spot and be ready to work really hard for them. Theres no easy tips in most cases for guys. Hopefully the female dancers where you dance will be as wonderfully supportive as most I've seen of their male counterparts that take dancing seriously, that certainly makes things a lot easier.

Your warning to male dancers seems a pretty good one tho Pickles.. it certainly is not an easy road but a very rewarding one I feel in the end.

It is not an easy road for males, but not really for females either. To be a good, at-keyboard, friendly, socializing, professional-quality (within the game environment) dancer takes WORK, regardless of the size, shape, color, or gender of your toon... Although it is fun work, it is not easy.

But then, who the heck wants easy? The fun of a game like this is the challenge of it. :-)

So I'm definitely in a poor position currently, which is why I'm so darn jealous of Tiaga and others on this forum that have found an excellent player-run place to perform.

Well I didn't exactly find it. I was given the deed to it. And I busted my ass the first few days to make sure there was always at least one person there (me) so when others showed up they would stay. Not to mention getting word out about the place. It's still not to where I want it, but it's still becoming quite the place to be. People come by because they are curious, and discover again what fun being an entertainer can be.

(On a side note I just found I was humming starwars1 as I was writing this. Anyone else do that?)

The most difficult part about getting the place going is that without people there, nobody stays. And if people don't stay, there aren't people there. You could have a steady stream of people in and out but until one of them stays, you won't have a crowd. Putting some effort into decorating can help with this. (I think some people think I'm rich now that I've added the small collection of force crystals I have to the decoration.)

Most of the female dancers are very supportive and make it fun. Some are not, and some even give negative comments. Most of the time, that exposes the sex of the player right there.

Sometimes when other guys call into question my masculinity for being a dancer, I'll just casually point out which one is surrounded by women. Occasionally the other guy will comment about how all the dancers are really men anyway. Well, perhaps the ones in fleshwraps and exotic leotards they are drooling over. But I know for a fact that almost every single one of the women that I hang out with really are women. (Not that I care one way or the other, I just found it an amusing tidbit.)

I don't mean to put a negative spin on things. Dancing can be very fun and rewarding for either sex, and I enjoy it a lot. Just don't expect it to be all roses.

One time I was comparing my experience dancing with another dancer, and we discovered that we both had our share of hardships, hers were just of a slightly different nature.

I looove the male dancers. If you wear a thin pleated skirt and nothing else - you will get tips from da girls. Maybe some pinches. I'm doing dance now myself, and I have sooo much more fun when I have boy dancers to chat with.

I am a male trandoshan dancer atm, but I really enjoy the footloose style and it looks really good when I do it, after I unlock this Jedi junk, I will surely come back to my favorite dance, now I only wear pants and not a shirt so the question of the day is:

Do you like scaley nipples?

The world may never know... Considering nipples are something mammals have (Does "mammary glands" ring any bells?) and trandoshans are reptilian.
