Thread: The Tipless Dance

I've been mastered since August, so EXP no longer applies, and hasn't for a very long time. Usually, if it's simply a cantina situation where they come in and watch, I get miffed if I'm the only one there and try to strike up a conversation but they ignore me. I get more irritated if they just leave without so much as a thank you.

Typically I allow the people I am buffing to name their own price and usually that works really well. However, lately I've had a string of people who ask if I can buff them so I do so and they won't say anything to me except "how much longer". Then leave without so much as a thank you. That annoys me.

However, if I had traveled 5k or had helped someone in the middle of nowhere I don't think a mere thank you would have been enough. I'm another one who won't let themselves be taken advantage of, so I suppose I'll have to re-think my policies as well.

"I simply tell them not to /tell me again for the purpose of dragging me away from all the other people who need me andnot being fully apreciative."

They get the point from that. I then go on...

"Thank you for thinking of me, I just can not perform the service again"

If they then try to tip me, I say

"This gesture is appreciated, but it doesn't seem that it came from the heart. I am going to return you this money with one charge. Next time you see an entertainer that really does a good job. Tip them to show them and tip them huge. Then add this money on top of it"

That tends to solve it for me and others from those players

I never travel unless there is an agreed to fee for my performance ahead of time. Just like aother professions in the gamewould do. If I am dancing for the fun of it and somebody, where I am, want's a buff, that's different, heck I was there anyway, they can tip or not tip. If somebody asks me for a buff when I am not dancing and not in a cantina then I will charge them and tell them how much up front. I also gurantee how much of a buff they will get and if they don't get it, I refund money.

I got nothing for a long time from a lot of customers, till I realized, geeze, I didn't ask and now I am upset they didn't read my mind. There are noob's and deadbeats in the game. Sorting them out from the other folks, well that's a bigger pain to me than just being honest with people up front of what I expect in return for performing for them.

I guess since I made master I have become a real prima donna but its made the game more enjoyable for me by cutting down on the old I was not tipped situation.

Another thing I just wanted to chime in on was that since I have made master I have had more fun playing the game compared to all my time spent doing other things. Dancing definitely Rocks!

What I like to do in situations like that is joke around a bit in the tell, for example...... If you are going to use your speeder to get there, tell them they will have to pay shipping and handling of the merchandise (yourself). Let the individual know that fuel for your speeder is included in the S&H fee...... worse comes to worse you could always do a bit of roleplaying about them putting credits in your outfit (ie. /emote motions that it's ok to slip credits in her waistband; /wink ).

When I was a Chef I told one person that wanted their crate of food delivered that I would have to charge extra for shipping, and then inform them that it would be there within one business day. 2 minutes later I sent them a mail letting them know their shipment was on the delivery speeder and on the way. When I got there I got one heck of a tip, and I think it was all due to the roleplay aspect and the fact that I just didn't bluntly ask for more credits. Sure it's more work then just run to a cantina and dance for a few people and then leave, but it's really fun.

PS: I can't tell you how many times I was all ready to give someone a tip just because of the way they roleplayed what they were doing and then had them TELL me that they wanted a specific amount of credits (Doctor Buffs just to name one), and I gave them exactly how much they wanted, instead of the amount I was going to give that was more.

Hi all!

first off let me say that I honestly had no idea how much fun dancing would be and I intend to keep it regardless of what ever I decide to do in the future. Awesome profession!!

I have been struggling with how to approach tips and mind buffs. I recently had a situation happen to me that left me shaking my head. What happened was this. I am dancing in a cantina with some friends when I get a tell. It is from a rebel that is at city that is only about 5k from where I am at on Tattoine. I tell him that I would be more then happy to help him and that I'll be there in about 10 minutes.

OOF hit port before I was done.

I wrapped up things where I was at (BTW it was the Unchained Cantina In SandStorm City, Tattoine, Startsider. Place is always busy) jumped on my speeder and headed over. When I got there it was a group of say 5-6. I got an invite and proceeded to dance for them. I buffed all of them and after about 15 minutes they all got up said thanks and walked out. For my efforts I got no tip. I was really upset that for my work they would not have the courtesy to tip me.

I dont want to be percieved as money grubbing by asking for a tip. I am more a dancer for the social part and not the money but when I dont get tipped it makes me feel taken advantage of. Like I said I dont want to sound like a whiner be asking for a tip but I also want to allow people to be there own judge of what they feel is an appropriate sum. Even if they are poor and can only affor 1000 credits at least they acknowledged the service rendered.

How has everyone else handled this?

The best way is to take down their PA tags and send a /tell or E-Mail to their leaders. If that doesn't work, next time someone from one of those PAs asks a request, tell them about the last one you serviced. Those solutions will work a lot better than anything else. A PA's greatest need is for new members, and often times the smart PAs know to have a good rep with the socials. You see, dancers run into a LOT of people: like those who are disgruntled with their PA, or novices, and the smart PAs know not to tick off the observant entertainers, or else they risk getting a bad rep.

Well yeah. Plus you're a master, which means you can charge a little more.

If someone asks me to come to them and buff or heal, and they aren't in my PA, I negotiate a price before I head over. My price includes round trip travel over and above whatever they're going to pay for my services. It sounds a little harsh, but the people who are serious will work with you, and those who aren't are weeded out by that step. I'm in business, and treating my dancing that way gets me better clientele, in my experience.

Or, if you can hunt on Dantooine, you can pay me the additional 2500 credits to get there and home. I haven't ever had to ask for payment in advance, though. The people I've negotiated with have routinely paid in full with no problem.

While I have been stiffed before, it never included not being compensated for my travel - becauseI don't travel. I get quite enough buff requests locally. Sometimes more than I want . . . Besides, I've found that most people are more than willing to come to me for a buff. I had one client come from Corellia to Bria just to have me buff him before he took missions on Dantooine. (Like my buffs are any better than anyone elses . . . . go figure.)

I, too, believe you handled it in the best possible manner - and that your clients were cads. You have learned a valuable lesson from it if nothing else. What you do with the knowledge is your decision. I don't think it is wrong to negotiate a fee up front. It lets the client know that you place a value on your time and abilities. I don't have a problem with entertainers being paid for their craft - that's how its done in RL. Its not how I do it, however, as both my musician husband and I have a policy that we do not set a fee for buffs and weallow the client to decide what amount they want to give (and only mention that if they ask). But, then again - we've never traveled. And we make most of our money other ways, as well. Which is a wise thing for an entertainer, I think. The general populace tends to take us for granted.

____________________________________________________________________________

This is exactly the reason I never sent a fee, but ask that the client pay me what they feel is a fair price for the buff. I did a couple of buffs yesterday and one client paid me 2k,the other disappeared, but laterhe returnedand paid me 20k. I thought I had been stiffed but just shrugged it off. I can do this because I supplement my income by doing missions as a pistoleer. I love dancing and have been a dancer since I began, but I have also tried 11 other professions without sacrificing master dancer. My suggestion would be to choose a secondary profession to earn a living and dance for the pure enjoyment. This way, when you are stiffed, it doesn't hurt so much.

When you buff groups sometimes they become confused and think someone in the group has already covered your tip. Speak to the person who sent you the tell (or group)and say that you travelled because you really need the cash. That usually works as a reminder that youshould to be tipped.

There really is no excuse for someone to call you have you provide services and then leave with only a thanks. That is a sorry set of players. Personally i do what i can for my entertainers, i might not be the richest man in the world but i make sure they get something.

As a Master squad leader i went out of my way to try and find dancers to heal mind wounds of my group. Its very hard to convince dancers to leave the clubs and cantinas. But you better believe that when i find one that will we group with them and they get all the benefits of being in my group plus i typically pay them about 50k for buffing everyone and then another amount depending on how many times we have to use the services. I hope that in the future they will work for less but for one trip i am out of my pocket spending 75k for dancer for my group. And no one lays a hand on them, licks, or harasses them. You all deserve the respect my groups owe you. Otherwise they would all have to be flying back to a cantina and sitting around missing out on xp or the rest of us waiting on them.

Anyways its so much funner having a dancer with the group the guys always tend to protect her even if as a tkm she could kick everyone elses butt.

Delsa,

Let me say you handled it perfectly. While I agre they certainly shoudl of tiped you since you were asked to travel. I'm fairly confident you won't have to deal with it on a regular basis and treating your next request any differently then you treated this one will only put a bad vibe in the air. My rule of thumb has allways been the dancing is free and so are the buffs (they don't cost me anythign to deliver) and I would rather treat all my customers well and colect tips from the willing rather then squeeze someone for a tip and make someone watching think badly of me. The majority of cutomers are very willing tippers and they more then make up for situatiosn liek this where you certainly should of been tipped but wern't.

I know this is OT, but I have to say I've had great fun being a party toseveral hunting/mission groups (mostly with my former PA). I've learned so much from all of the other players and gained a lot of scout, carbine and combat xp! Its especially funwhen mymusician husband and I go together with the group (we did this a few weeks ago and was part of a krayt hunting team with a different guild) - you can't forget those secondary stats, you know!

I just made master dancer today, and the tips for actual healing were non-existent in the last week. The buffing was going fairly well with the "tip what you think is fair bit," but today maybe 50% of 25 people I buffed didn't tip a cent. Keep in mind I do 4 minute buffs at max duration, which some people have never had before. I even got in a few 30 second "exploit?" buffs, which didn't seem to increase the tips. It might have been the newer characters that didn't know much about mind buffs, but it seems that I'd be better off just setting a fixed rate like doctors do. Atleast I wouldn't have to suck itup when I getno tip for the best buff I can give, just because I said "tip what you think is fair."

Tomorrow will be a better day, that's the end of my rant.
