Thread: Is this feasible?

I did some testing:

I set auto-afk to kick in after 1 minute.

I set up a macro to flourish... with no mouse movement nor keyboard use, I went afk. However, any mouse movement or use of the keyboard and I ceased to be marked as afk.

I set up a second macro to test various things that are macroed:

  • /mood (some mood)

  • /say (something)

  • Emotes

  • /tell (some message)

  • /join

  • Selecting a target

  • /follow

  • /attack

None of these prevented me from going afk with auto-afk enabled. Can anyone else think of anything else that gets macroed that we can test to see if they stop auto-afk from kicking in? It seems to me that simply eliminating the ability to disable auto-afk would be a major step in combatting the problem... combine that with an automatic /dump after 5 minutes of afk and the afk problem will be reduced to people using 3rd party apps (thus clearly breaking the EULA).

I will test further and post my results... if anyone knows of any other macroed commands, please post them so they too can be tested.

P.S. I found it annoyingthat you can go auto-afk even while macroing things that will prevent you from being disconnected, but that you can be disconnected for "inactivity" while performing activities that will prevent you from going auto-afk.

And one of the major road blocks I believe that they have to changing their macro system. Is that if they change their system to where only 3rd party programs could be used to afk for long periods of time. CSRs then will be spending a LARGE amount of time policing that sort of thing. And what happens if SOE finds someone that does it and they get warned, and then temp banned... If they perma ban them they lose that money.

Where as currently while they don't want people using 3rd party programs their very own macro system is enough that CSRs have to spend very little time if ANY trying to find 3rd party users.

As long as they have a commitment to make it a rule, they will have to make the commitment to enforce it. They are not afraid of banning people for breaking the rules. They've done it before with the credit duping exploit, and probably other exploits as well. Other games do police for breaking rules on unattended play. Surely you saw the newsclip about the 1000 players banned from "the game that shall not be named" for using 3rd party macros for unattended play, and if not, ask Javy about it. It can be done if they decide to do it. That's not to say that they can catch everyone all the time, but they can probably catch the worst offenders.

That is the exact same thing I was saying, and have been fighting for for since august.

There are some more complicated issues there, and ways around it to stay buff-boting, but it CAN be done!!

Now I have to wonder if you'll get flamed like I do for taking the unpopular stance...

That goes along with the "An AFK player can make no actions after 20 minuites".

yes but isnt that just another bug that should be fixed? Still... /decline should work and can be reinvited again.

My testing has so far indicated that auto-afk is unaffected by anything BUT keyboard and mouse use. This says to me that if they made it so that:

  1. Auto-afk can't be disabled

  2. No /command works while afk

  3. Change auto-disconnect to work from keyboard/mouse use instead of whatever causes it to happen now (it seems stupid to me that I can go auto-afk while my macro does things that keep me online but I can get disconnected for "inactivity" while doing things that keep me from going auto-afk)

That would be all that would be neccessary to solve the problem... this would allow us to still have recursive macros. In fact, all they really need to do is the 3rd thing on that list.

One problem with this is that people have gone LD immediately after getting a group invite (this has happened to me) and when they come back, the invite is still there, but the pop-up is gone. It is my custom to click on the pop-up to accept or decline an invitation to group, but if I have gone LD and still have an open invite, it's nice to still be able to accept or decline.

I think the one unsurmountable obstacle is the inability to detect and control the use of third party applications. Yes..they have stated that these are against the rules. However, they are not detectable. Depending upon a player answering a question presented by a CSR (in order to determine if it's live or memorex)is not only costly but unreliable, especially in a multi-language environment.Depending upon player reports of unattended play only opens things up to a lot of griefing. We tried this on a MMOG I used to work on and it was not a very manageable solution.

To some extent yes 3rd party apps ARE detectable. How? By their consistancy. They will type the same things in, click at the same spot on the screen etc. All stuff that can be pattern matched. It's not easy but I know of at least one MMPORPG that does this fairly successfully.

I always have to be odd... I am used to it.

First of all before removing the afk thingy, we need a privacy feature!!!

I often go into hidingby going /afk, so I can get some work done, or when I just don't want to deal with tells.

Privacy feature first, then the rest would be fine.

That's why in my proposal I made a distinct deliniation between regular AFK and forced AFK.

Forced AFK being when a body times out for inactivity.
