This thread by Red-Dwarf pretty much is an "everything you ever wanted to know" about Inspirations.

There are two types of buffs:
1. General inspiration buff - gives bonus XP and faction points, works for anyone, happens automatically if they /watch or /listen. Novice entertainer allows this buff (more skill = longer duration, but no effect on buff quality).
2. Specific crafter buffs - give bonuses to crafting experimentation and resource quality, work only for one specific profession at a time, must be chosen by the dancer at the time of application (only after being watched/listened to), and cannot be AFKed except with a 3rd-party program (which is a violation of the EULA and can get you banned from the game). Novice dancer (or musician) allows you to do this (again, more skill = longer duration, but no effect on quality).
The specific buffs are divided between dancers and musicians. Dancers buff the more organic/stylistic profs such as chefs, BEs, tailors, musicians, IDs, and the like. Musicians buff the more "engineer" oriented profs such as WS, SW, AS, and so on (though they also buff dancers). You will need to be at the keys to do any of these profession-specific buffs, because the /inspire command takes no arguments, and so you have to use the popup window to choose one.
