Thread: Who here actually enjoys the dancing part of being a dancer?

Personally I think our dance mechanics are pure garbage. They are basically a set of emotes, noting more. If I dance badly I heal just the same as if I dance wonderfully. The worst that can happen is that I run myself out of action.
I would *love* for what I am doing as a player to impact the results I get from my dancer (button presses).

Not liking the dance but doing it anyway is like saying I'm only a TK because I like looking at dead things, but I don't like actually killing them. But I do it anyway.
but...but...I like the dead things...
Ok, not really.
I love the dancing, I love the music (yeah, you read that right), and just the whole entertaining package. One of my all time favorite things to do is sit there with my playback droid going on Ceremonial or Virtuoso with bandfill and just boogie. I'll boogie in the cantinas...my house...the middle of nowhere...
I adore the social aspect (hehe, see my signature? actual in game quote), but I can have that with ANY profession. Heck, I have that as Derianadai and she can't dance a step or carry a tune in a bucket. I love the entertainment for the entertainment.
Oh...I will be changing that sig tomorrow I think...I have a neat idea...

I love dancing. Putting together flos in different ways and playing around is a fun thing to do if you are that way inclined

I think this is a point that is overlooked way too often -- what exactly is combat? Running up to a mob and pushing the special button a million times..
Only with combat you always get the same result. Push button -> dead rancor. Ta da!
Dancing... you can have anything you want happen.

I like animation a lot and even though I can do the same things in an animation/modeling program, I love that a game lets me do it where other people can see what my av is doing as a form of personal expression. It's the same reason that I'm an emote junky in all online games with emotes. I love that SWG picks up words in your chat and let's your toon automatically animate some kind of movement that expresses that word. It's still so cool to me!
My only complaint about the actual Dancing that we have is that it is too much button pushing and too canned. I would like to have much better control over the animations.
I mix because I have to if I want more options, but it is a poor substitute for the real animating tools we could be given to really create custom dance moves and routines. Even Sultrina, perhaps the best player at the work around, pined for real animation tools for Dancer.

I definitely enjoy the dancing, performing, etc. I've said it many times on these forums that the "social" aspects of this profession have maybe...oh 10% of the reason why I dance. As someone else said, you can be social doing any profession. I really enjoy dancing, especially having others watch me dancing. To me dancing is a performance profession, not a social one.

Ditto. I always thought the misnomer was an indication of misunderstanding.

Well that does depend on the mob, your combat mastery, and comp + buffs. Even in PvP it depends so much on your template. However I do agree that given the right mob or PvP contest it means a lot. In fact from an outcome point of view it means more because as else-whira said we can dance or play badly and have the same affects in healing or buffing.
The art in the entertainer professions is in finding those combinations that make what we do actually appealing to others and when you get it right it is so rewarding. A perfect example was 8 ladies doing formal together with one of the best timed flourish macros I've ever seen. It didn't just impress us in the band and the dancers we actually had people on the street stopping and commenting on how beautiful it was. That is what makes this so rewarding for me.

I know that the 8 dancers dancing with our band last night seemed to be enjoying it. Tuning their moves to not break the flow, picking the appropriate dance to match the song we played, working together to create a wave of effects across the line (i.e. successively do dazzle, smokebomb, etc down the line).
Hehe, and so did we as Musicians ![]()

Actually I love it - I am actively working on putting together some song lyrics and dances that go with them - and having a blast figuring out how aliases work etc. I love just picking a dance and going through 1 flourish at a time and figuring out the best way to arrange them into a routine.

I keep coming back to play SWG because when I listen to music, I feel the need to see my character dance to the music currently playing. I like to change dances when the theme of the music changes. I like to bop, I like to glide, I like to just flow.
What was the theory, in its entirety?

Yes, every prof in any game boils down to just a series of buttons being pushed (unless you are AFK camping).
Dance and music are different in that you can actually individualize your button pushing to project your own style. Sure, it's easy and acceptable to just macro flo 1-8 over and over, but for me as a dancerit's more fun to try andmatch my flourishes to the song and flos of themusician's music. My ingame husband, Roho (a Master Musician), has been working on ID and we enjoy performing for his customers while they wait for their changes. As that would be a pain to macro it's all button pushing - and it's fun!
