Thread: Can someone catch me up: Buff Bot vs Grinding

I started playing SWG again soI could play with some RL friends and, well, who wouldn't love to play in the world of Star Wars. The guild needed a dancer so...

I currently AFK dance in a dancer group to grind up to Master Dancer. I am doing this so that I can fill a need in a Guild. I do not plan on doing AFK dancing after hitting MD (well, maybe to get the mission dances...anyway...). I plan on doing live ATK, in-game, RP buffs for the guild and teams that I am on.

I don't do the Buff Bot thing to farm credits or xp - I don't do it at all! I have a light spam every 8 minutes asking to make sure I am in the Entertainer group when I AFK (Almost done BTW).

My question is - am I doing something wrong ot taboo?

First of all you should never have any repeating text in a macro. It's REALLY annoying to people that actually play the game. Also, why do you want this character if it isn't fun for you to play?

Just join a group once and check on it every now and then. An eight minute window is nice, but I always get annoyed by the "invite me please" spam, no matter how spaced because I then try to group those people, trying to be nice and I get squat in return.

Spam just gets annoying in anyplace where people aren't moving around.

Oh, she is so much fun to play. Dancer has turned out to be so much more fun than combat ever was.

Dancing and active buffing and social interaction is great. The only reason I currently AFK is so I can get up to max effectiveness for the Guild as soon as possible.

I can't wait to be a social butterfly as a cute lil Twi'lek dancer. It has already been so much fun in ATK mode!

So please, understand that I LOVE Sylke and the dancer profession.

One more thing... I am not in danger of getting banned for my AFK grind, right. That is still okay to do? Not violating and user agreement?

lol!

I wouldn't worry. The buffbots aren't banned for total AFK buffing.

but if you were banned I would hope the bots were too.

Just remember that AFK isn't liked much. But a silent AFK entertainer is better than a spamming one. And if at all possible do try to be there as much as you can. Get to know the people you group with so that when you do go AFK there will be fewer people getting mad at you and more saying things like "she's coming right back" or she's gone for the night.

Sylke, There is no current regulation prohibiting AFK animations of your character. But since you asked if this was taboo... my personal opinion is yes it it. When entertainers are performing as automatons it has many negative ramifications which I won't reiterate here - though you can feel free to pm me and I'll give you my whole novella of reasons

I can understand wanting to be the most help as quickly as possible for your guild. But I would ask that you think about this: how many other professions in your guild are grinding AFK? Is the TK artist, the rifleman, the swordsman? The guild is willing to wait for those professions and will hep them as they can. They are willing to help them and I'll bet they are willing to be patient and help you as well. Take the time to really learn your profession now and you'll be a much better asset for your guild.

Actualy i watched you one day in mos eisley and i poked you to see if you were live. You seemed confused and sent a tell in brackets so i assumed you are a roleplayer. I was going to join in on the fun but some guy came in and instructed you to come with him.

Do your self the satisfaction of not grinding afk or using invite spam macros. It's worth more in the end than helping out a guild. Guilds come and go but the satisfaction of being an AFK free entertainer lasts forever.

Thanks. The way I have it calculated I have two more overnights of AFK until I am done. Then it's off to find that Wookie who's Mr Right!

I find that there is so much to do and see and I haven't even left the cities yet. I can't imagine having a pesudo NPC buff bot. Interaction with people is what I am trying to get to. (I just didn't like the idea of wasting my teamies time to give them a dinky 10% buff for a week, then a 20% for another two weeks, then...)

PS: Another opinion question. I have made a couple of song macros for while I dance that "sing" songs I have written. It is a lot of text via /say - so I was thinking I would only do them on request while outside cities. Sound reasonable?

Performance songscan be a great addition and don't always have to be kept out of the cantinas. Just be aware of what's going on around you and how you are presenting the song. A performer on my server had a great song she wrote and occassionally performs but she didn't have enough pauses in her macro. So it seemed less like a song and more like spam.. even though we were all trying to listen to her sing. Song is hard to convey in text and the beat you hear in your head is not what we are reading unless you are careful. Also busy cantinas are probably not the best place for song. But when the conversation dies down it would be nice to have a few good songs to listen to.

Cheers,

Please spend enough time ATK to learn to use our tools. I see so many people play their dancer at the keyboard after master but never learn what dances/flos/effects work together. They don't do anything unique or particularly entertaining. Entertaining can be so much more. And there is nothing more frustrating to me than when a new master wants to dance or play with me and others and we have to explain to them what we're doing, in details they could have learned instead of grinding afk. Sure, it takes more time (I've mastered both dancer and entertainer twice and never a moment afk so I know about all the frustrations of it) but it really is worth it to take your time and learn the prof.
