Howdy all,
I would like to propose that the DEVs make vehicles safe zones where we can not be attacked. This would allow pure entertainers or pure crafters to explore SWG safely. At the moment we can not attack from a vehicle, so I don't see this as a ballance issue. It would be great to be able to explore in safety.
What do you guys think of this idea?

It would let people get too close to things that they shouldn't or stay protected from people in places they shouldn't...
e.g. A Light Jedi on a speeder /slapping Darth Vader in Theed...
A novel idea, but not practical in implementation.

I was thinking of it is a good way to have a safari type excursion...go see the wild life and scenery. In another instance of this thread was brought up how this could be used to grief others...so, would have to prevent the ability to get in your 'safe' vehicle if you get out and start combat.

I'd say just make it so that the vehicle state also works like Mask Scent... Once you're on your bike, most NPC's won't aggro on you but players can and high level NPC's (e.g. Leia's bodyguards) can.

SOE will never do this.
2 reasons:
1. We arent supposed to leave the cantina, duh.
2. We arent supposed to be at the keyboard to want to explore. Sorry.

Perhaps this could be the type of thing you'd have to initiate from a specific location (city), with the knowledge that if you ever 'got off' your bike, you'd be returned to that location. It'd also have to be the kind of thing that's strictly a visual exploration; no interacting with the world (and maybe when you're in your 'safe explorer' vehicle, you or your vehicle could have some kind of effect to indicate to any other people who happen to see you that you're not interacting with anything).
I dunno if the devs would go for it, as it at least *seems* to serve a niche market, and would require a decent amount of coding to do it right in terms of avoiding exploits. Pretty nifty idea though.

Ah...Aleyo,
I like that thought, how about a 'Safari' Mode that is activated at a garage from the vehicle radial menu. Once chosen the vehicle locks you aboard...so you can't get off...and the vehicle becomes a 'Safe Zone' for exploration.

yes, you would have to activate this mode on your own to enable it. if you did anything such as do an emote/exit the mount/whatever then the safari mode would end and you could be attacked by anything. i also like the idea of this having to be activated in a town near a garage...but what if you get pulled off your bike by a stormie patrol so they can search you? by the guidlines put forth you would go into normal mode and could be attacked by any mob. if this were to be implemented it would take awhile to test but it has ALOT of potential to be a great thing for ent's who would wanna explore so they could gain some badges.

I think this concept has merit.
I am very tired of the dogs chasing cars way that NPC's attack you while driving around.

One thing to think about is to improve the AI.
They did something very nice in COH, that could be translated into SWG in a number of ways. In COH, if you "con" red or higher to a mob, it won't attack you. You can stand right next to a "hostile" mob that would attack you if it was a white con, but now that it is below-green to you, it doesn't attack. The mobs thus evaluate you on-the-fly for whether you are a reasonable target or not.
Now, that doesn't help beecause we would con below-green to even a chuba, but, this could easily be converted to vehicles. For example, most creatures in the real world are either afraid of cars, or don't register them as potential prey in any case. When, for example, is the last time a bear attacked a car? Or a shark attacked a boat, rather than a swimmer? It doesn't happen too much. So they could reason (and in fact I would) that the smell, sight, and sound of something like a speeder bike would at least deter non-NPCs (creatures) from attacking you. So however they code the AI, they could "downgrade" the aggro you get from things based on bikes. That is, red dots become yellow dots if you are on a bike. Get off the bike, and immediately they become red dots -- that is, when you dismount all creatures within 64 m would do an instant re-evaluation of their aggro toward you, and it would bump back up to natural levels if you are not on a bike.
NPCs would work in a similar way. Oh they know it is a target, but they also (unless they are complete bone-heads) can't possibly fail to realize that you will be out of range so fast they can't possibly "get" you, and so they don't bother. Perhaps this could be related to their weapon... NPCs with melee weapons won't bother to chase you because they know they can't get you, but ones with rifles or nightsisters with lightning might set up for a shot.
This wouldn't be perfect but I think it would help a lot. And it would make sense. What kind of an idiot tries taking pot-shots at something that is clearly out of range?

Call me silly, but I *like* having to run for my life occasionally. It gives me a bit of a challenge in getting to the places I want to see. Since some of the dangerous POIs are things you have to do to unlock Jedi, I definately don't think we should be able to get to those areas with no risk.
I just see too many ways for hunters to use their safe zone to keep from getting incapped or killed. I would also think they'd have to make it so that bikes cannot be hit by NPCs as well. Nightsister jumps some guy, he tries to tank her, gets a bit low and jumps on his bike. Safe zone, so she can't hit him. She can't blow up the bike... he gets out of it way too cheaply.

"When, for example, is the last time a bear attacked a car?"
That quote screams Farside comic
I think this is a really neat idea. Afterall, you can now craft and survey resources while on a bike...so it would do far more good than just allow non-combatents to explore, but allow crafters to have a chance in the wild while they go out searching for resources.
Edit: To counter the idea of a get away free card - speeders would have to be attackable and destroyable if this came to be...so in theory that NS would be able to shoot away his safe zone - BUT it would afford him a precious few seconds to try and get away without being one shotted off his bike.
