Thread: A plea for civility

In general, the dancer forum has been one of high tolerance and civility. I'm seeing more arguments that dissolve into name calling and flames, and a general feeling that people are losing their temper a bit.

In a way this is a sign that people are very passionate about this profession, which is a good thing, but we need to learn to focus that passion in constructive ways rather than fighting amongst ourselves.

We're all on the same side here. We all want what's best for the dancer profession, and while we may disagree on what may be best or how to move forward, what's important to note is that we're all after the same goal.

The debates and the differences of opinions are not just beneficial, they're necessary. Out of those discussions come the important ideas and changes that will improve us all. I recognize that it's easy to get a bit heated in a discussion we feel strongly about, but we should remember that no opinions are ever wrong and the person on the other side probably wants the same thing we all do. Losing our civility with each other not only fails as a debating tactic, it makes our community appear to be fighting amongst ourselves rather than pushing as a collective whole for the changes we want to see.

I don't set myself on a pedestal here either, I'm just as guilty at times. For the most part, I think we're a very constructive and civil group and it's important that we stay that way going forward.

I look forward to many more interesting discussions with you all.

Cheers!

- J

Can't we all just get along?

Heh. Looks like the answer might be "NO."

Exactly pickles. It's completely unhelpful and useless to respond with arguments that say I don't like your opinion so quit talking. This forum is for presenting everyone's opinion, and just because you think you're right that doesn't mean the next person has to. You don't have to agree with your fellow dancers opinions, however you should respect them. Which means that there will probably be someone that doesn't agree with you on most every issue, that doesn't mean they're attacking you personally, they just feel a different way. After you feel you've expressed your opinion, just agree to disagree, message boards almost never change a person's feeling about something.

Guilty as charged... I can get a bit emotional *screams*, uh sorry, when I live myself into my character and when I see things happen that shouldn't be happening at all then I still try to be civil... If I'm successfull or not, I'll leave that upto you to decide. But unlike some other games this IS a Role Playing Game so why are so many people not even attempting that ?

.oO(Did that make any sense at all ?)

I agree with your post, Pickles, except for this part. I'm not so sure we all DO want the same goal. There are always those who see a game through the lens of their own convenience and others who try to see the good of the whole. I don't think you'll ever get those two groups to agree.

The ultimate outcome will, in fact, decide the future of this game for the Dancer: will the Devs alter the design so that Dancing is not only non-macroable but maybe even more fun so it's not an issue anymore? Or will they introduce half-measures and lose the more concientious and dedicated of our number? (Translation: will I keep my subscription if my profession becomes a breed of unintelligent droids?)

I do, however, agree that passionate debate is necessary, even if it means we lose our tempers sometimes. And trust me, this board is milquetoast compared to some of the political forums I participate in. You haven't seen blood and gore until you've seen right-wingers and left-wingers lock horns Some of those debates make Texas Chainsaw Massacre look like a Bambi re-run!

i think it could all be resolved if we all just remember that we all paid for this game and we can choose to play it the way we want. until the devs 'fix' the so called problem theres not a whole lot you or me or anyone else can do to change it, but believe me there are bigger better things the devs need to fix first and i hardly believe that the afk dancing is high up on there list. i know in my post i also started to lose my temper and i am sorry, but all i did was ask for help with something and though i finally got it, i had to put up with everyones two cents first. i feel thats uncalled for, i just asked a question, if you dont want to answer it for whatever reason, then please dont, but understand to that i just picked up the proffession and didnt realise there was a 'dancer war' going on. my point is, every post on this dancer forum looks like it turns into an attack on whichever side and its really irritating dont you think?

Sorry, Vanguard, this post was not specifically about the thread you started, nor was it about you personally. I apologize if it seems that way. Nor is it specifically about AFK dancing, though that does certainly seem to be a hot topic.
