If you guys don't think it's fun, you don't have to... I will do it myself. We need a proper one.

I think it will be more fun though if we can use real quotes from old posts and give people credit. We do all love the spotlight after all, hehe.

I thought Deila's recent bit on tipping was dead on:

Why am I not getting tipped?

...from the initial moment of contact you have to be a bit careful...

Learn to read your customers playing style. Some players come to the cantina for a break from being out in the wild hunting, and want some friendly conversation to take a break. Other players feel like they've been forced to the cantina to satisfy the BF game mechanic, and resent it a little (or a lot)... the last thing these people want is someone talking their ears off. Start slow... greet them, and maybe ask how life's treating them out there, or if business is going well... just one quick question. If you get a flat one word response ("fine."), chances are they're really not in the mood for you to fire off a tirade of chattiness - and tipping you would be the last thing on their minds. Just let them know you'll have them on their way in no time, and they like the sound of that. Ding! Tips. On the other hand, if the response to that first 'feeler' question is more openly inviting conversation, take the cue... as entertainers, our ability to converse intelligently on any subject is what makes us "marketable" for tips. Learn to feel what your customers want to talk about, and indulge them. Draw the line if they want to talk trash/sex, if you're not comfortable with that. Otherwise, remember that if you can figure out what someone else wants to talk about, and provide them a good friendly conversation on their subject of choice, you'll have made their stay in the cantina a lot of fun, and they'll almost always show appreciation for it.

-Deila

Something like that! We're dancers... we can get away with flashy!

Please leave your quotes and/or questions that you think need to make it on the FAQ here. I'll leave this up for about a week.

1. Don't play for cash in Coronet.

It's where afk macroers live.. I made 10k in coronet... that was the money that Panthu gave me to hire a combat medic which... um.... *runs away!*

Set your chat colors (under ctrl+O) to hightlight key words and phrases you want to be sure to catch. My chat box highlights my character name, and the words 'tips,' heals,' and the phrase 'at you,' among others. That way I know when someone has called my name, tipped me, healed me, etc. Also, you can have the chat box color system messages to a dim grey color, to make all of those 'you have received XX points of healing XP' messages easier to ignore.

A few simple greeting macros, such as "Welcome %NT," "Hi, %NT" etc., makes a huge difference, if you're conscientious about using them the moment a patron enters the cantina. Just target the character, and hit the macro, and you've greeted your new customer by name (and it's always spelled correctly) before the other entertainers know he's there. Guess who will get the tip.

Heh. I finally got tired of having to answer in Game about how mind buffs work... so finally I snapped and made an e-mail to myself to forward to players. I added some notes on things I'd learned. Like I note how "it doesn't matter who is leading the group" because one guy swore himself blue that HE had to be leader or MY buff would not work on him. Dunno what he was smoking....

Guide to a mind buff for Musicians and Dancers...

Active Mind Buff: You focus on the client and type /setperform. The client begins to watch. You begin to flourish. I recommend using a macro just so that your hands are freed up for chatting. It will take about 10 minutes of constant watching for a full 2 hour buff to set in. And your client will not see a change in their stats until they actually /stop watching you.

Passive Mind Buff: You group with some people. If these people are watching you and your are flourishing, then when the 10 minutes are up, and they stop watching, they will have been buffed. This does not require the /setperform command. Allows you to buff more than one person at a time. And also it does not matter if you are leader or not.

The buff WILL NOT take effect until the client stops watching.

Notes: Buff time seems to be dependant on the amount of action spent. Experiement. A buff can be dropped from 10 to 5 minutes if done right. (there are faster ones but the verdict on if it is an exploit or not has not been determined. but it's better safe than sorry. Use the 30 second buff macro at your own risk.) Doing a buff faster than 10 minutes will generally require a devoted healer or a very good Action and secondaries buff.

If a person goes Link Dead while you are buffing, you will have to start over.

The command /pause 600; /tell (my name) The buff is done; will time 10 minutes and then send a tell to yourself. 600 is 10 minutes. 300 is 5.

Be careful of the /setperform command. Sometimes if a person is watching you and you type it while focused on them is has been known to make them stop watching. Also if you accidentally put a space between set and perform (i.e. /set perform ) it will reset your Bio with only the word "Perform" in it.

There are bank tips that are going about that can be forged. If the person has a first and last name- a valid bank tip will have both names in the "from" section. If the person only has one name it is nearly impossible to tell. Accept Bank Tips at your own risk.

If a person had a Mind buff... then died... the mind buff may not be effective but the buff timer is. This is aknown bug, and it is being worked on. do a /bug report ot tell a CSR- make sure they don't forget. The victim will not be able to be mind buffed again until the timer runs out.

Practical matters (mechanics)

  • Use /changedance to switch your dance if you don't want to stop moving. That can be useful for swapping between exotics

  • You can't move in the middle of a flourish. You gotta wait until it finishes before running off

  • "Drift": evil and complicated. Sultrina has the best description of how it works (basically, if you're "off center" in the base dance when you start your flourish, when your flourish ends your "base dance" is now recentered)

  • You may think that you look cool when you're doing formal or lyrical base dance, but you look like a drunkard. The flourishes always look fine. Either chain-flourish, or avoid altogether.

  • As you go higher on the dance tech tree, you get more effects, and they overwrite. If you do /dazzle, for example, it will do the highest level dazzle you have (i.e. /dazzle 3). But there are some cool effects at /dazzle 1 and /dazzle 2 that you may never see if you don't write custom macros for them. Be sure to experiment and see which effects you like - the highest ones may not always be the coolest.

  • If you want to accept bandflourishes do /bandflo on. If not /bandflo off. You don't get exp if someone else is flourishing you. You will flourish when someone does a /bandflo even if you are not doing the same dance as they are. As an etiquette matter, always ask your group whether they want to do bandflourishes if you are performing.

And that's all I can think of for now. Tiaga has the uber macro thingys for compositions and routines that I can't wrap my brain around.

And a note about buffing - you want to use the highest dance you have, but that's an exotic, and the flourishes take a ridiculously long time (like 35 seconds) and the buff will never take. Flourishing affects buff speed even if you don't perform the flourishes. So even if you feel like a dork, hit a flourish key every 10-15 seconds even if you're not done with your current flourish and the new flourish won't affect your performance in any way. (I learned this one the hard way after giving some substandard buffs).

Q: I see some dancer's and entertainers that keep flourishing but never need action heals, how can I do this?

A: More than likely they had increased thier secondary action stats to allow them to flourish more with less need to be healed. A couple of ways to accomplish this are: 1) Use a food that buffs secondary action stats, 2) Use spice (Drugs are bad mmmkay) 3) Get your secondary action stats buffed by a doctor.

Q: Even though I worked my butt off to be a Master Dancer I still fall frequently when I dance. This sucks, what can I do to be more graceful.

A: For some reason if you are holding something in your hands (which basically requires you to equip a weapon at this point) you don't fall as a Master Dancer. [not sure if this is true for novices]

Q: My inventory is always too full and I can't hold all my clothes. I like to change outfits regularly though, and my house is on the other side of the planet.

A: If there is a planet you dance on more than other planets, I highly recommend using the bank safety deposit box on that planet. It holds several more items and you can access your outfits at any bank terminal on that planet. Note that you can only have a safety deposit box on one planet at a time.

Q: How can I change out of my exotic leotard into a two-piece outfit without everyone seeing my panties?

A: Make macros for changing outfits. You can put your clothing items on hotkey buttons and then use a macro to switch between outfits faster than equipping them one at a time manually. If you have the smokebomb effect, you can use this to make the transition even more modest.

Q: I smiled at Some-Pervert-Player while I was performing in the cantina and now they're sending me graphic lewd tells. I asked them to stop several times but they won't. I'm horribly offended, what do I do?

A: /Report them, and then add them to your ignore list.

Q: Last night I saw some dancers dancing in unison, they were flourishing at the same time and it looked so cool. How can I be uber like that?

A: Dancers that are grouped together and performing the same dance can flourish in sync with each other using the /bandflourish command.

Q: I want to make sure to thank all my customers so how can I avoid missing a tip message in all the macro spam when the cantina is busy?

A: Try setting text coloration to display all text with the word "tip" to some bright color to make it stand out amongst all the spam.

Q: I heard that people are faking bank tips and ripping off dancers, what can I do to avoid this?

A: ???? [someone help me here...I'm not convinced this is the best answer at all] One suggestion is that if you are peforming a mind buff require a small retainer, like 1k, up front and make it clear that you don't accept bank tips for that.

Q: I heard that some dancers can more than double primary mind when they perform enhancements. How is this possible?

A:

Q: One of my guild-mates gave me a clothing attachment for dancing mind enhancement. How do I use it and what does it do?

A:

More to come soon...feel free to make suggestions to my answers too, I don't know it all and I don't claim to! I didn't have time to fill in all the answers yet.

there's some nice post about fake bank tip somewhere, i either saw it here or on the tailor borad. i think it was something like this: the name appears differently on a player email (first name only, lower case) vs. a system email (full name, with caps), so if you got a "bank tip" and isn't sure if it's real, check the name part of the email.

Some basic stuff I hav'nt seen in this thread before.

Q. Can we buff ourselves?

A. No, currently we are unable to do this, maybe in a future publish.

Q. Do the "flashy bits" (Roho's term for FX ) do anything?

A. No, they just look cool. (. . . oops Kirah is keeping me honest (see below) . . .they do burn the action!)

Q. Which tree is the best to start with.

A. Most people choose Dance Knowledge 1st as the higher the dance the greater the XP. The tech. tree deals with the mind buffing aspect.

Q. Should I do wound or fatigue tree first.

A. Either or, many people split them.

More as they come to me.....

A. They actually do something - they take large chunks of action away with each pretty littlebit of flash! They have also been know to temporarily blind patrons!

How about this one...

Q: I've taken an entertainer mission from the mission terminal, but I can't figure out how to complete it. What am I supposed to do?

A: When you take an entertainer mission, you'll get a waypoint outside the front door of the venue for your "gig". Go *inside* the building, and to the stage or main floor and begin dancing. Perform flourishes, and use the time to practice your dances. After about 10 minutes of performing, you'll get a system message that notifies you that the mission is complete, and that your payment has been deposited in your bank account.
