Thread: how to stop a buff bot

now, don't most buff bots work by auto-joining? you send an invite to the bot and it'll join you, then remind you to disband when the buff is done? why not have a group leader camped out near the bot and invite him/her/robot into the group. most buff bots are master dancer/musician anyway so it's not like they'ed be hurting the groups xp any, they'd actually be helping it. the only problem i see with this if the bots macro auto-disbands aftera quickbuff is done. if it does then the group leader would HAVE to keep an eye on the bot to make sure it stays in the group.

does this make sense? by keeping the bot in your group, you gain extra xp (from it being master lvl) and then force other players to interact with at keyboard players and keep the entertainer economy afloat! it's a kind of underhanded and dirty tactic to use against afk toons, but what buff-bots do is just the same for the at keyboard players.

Sounds interesting, but as you mentioned more will start using an auto disband feature on a timer. Give it a try though, it may work on a lot of them for a while.

When I'm in Theed, I usually end up being the group leader in some fashion or another. I will in fact invite and keep inviting those advertising they are buffing for free. You get a message if that person leaves the group so you just send another invite. Its a fun little game I like to play And makes other live entertainerssnicker when the bot is screaming "Group with me for free mind buff" and I have her trapped in our big group.

I've seen this happen as well, and as long as the buff bot is AFK, it works really well.

Though, you need to be careful because the SOE CSRs appear to be fully in support of buff bots. They consider this griefing the buff bot. I don't think I've heard of a single instance where a situation with a buff bot didn't get out of hand, and the CSRs stepped firmly behind the buff bot, warned the live players, and gave the buff bot a badge for being such a wonderful addition to the game.

Okay, maybe a little exaggeration there, but the perception is firmly there for me and I know several others. Don't go against the buff bots because the CSRs are on their side.

If you ask me, someone needs to sit down with the CSRs and have a chat with them because their priorities appear to be all messed up.

But, it does work, but is considered griefing...so be careful.

I AM ATK DANCER AND I SHALL GRIEF ANY BUFFBOT I SEE!

If I am banned or suspended that is SOE hurting their own game more! If they want to do that, I shall simply take my cash elsewhere. I'm not married to SWG, I'm playing it for as long as it seems fun to me.

It was delightfully quiet in the Theed Cantina on Bria last night. None of the buff bots came out to play, so all we only had to worry about dancing. Too bad someone can't convince Sony to just remove /join from being macroable. I imagine they've tried, but the CSRs keep lobbying against them.

SWG CSRs: Fighting for Buff Bot Rights

I know there are lots of discussions going on behind the scenes...just hope something good comes out of them...like the end of all buff bots.

laf.
hate to break it to you, but CSRs don't make policy. nor do they lobby for policy. every faucet of afk that dancers hate is allowed and encouraged by the designers/developers.

removing /join would be an easy fix. why hasn't it gone through? what are the rammifications of only joining a group via a popup box? can you think of any? the *only* rammification would be the rare instances where you must type /join to get into a group, which is noteably fixed by restarting the game. so i ask again, why hasn't the change gone through?

clue: they want to give players the option to do this, despite the drone from the "community". you don't have to like it, but i bet my bottom dollar it is here to stay forever. this fight has been fought and won already guys. you should focus your boundless positive energy on something else already.

You may have given up, but a lot of us haven't yet. Just because it didn't happen in October doesn't mean it can't happen now.

I have an alt that's a Master Entertainer/Dancer 4-3-4-4/Musician 4-0-4-0. Buffbots hurt my ability to gather healing xp to make it to master. I'll admit, I've held buffbots "hostage" to fill my own evil designs of making master Dancer.

My favorite was this musician buff-bot who didn't have a macro to restart his music in case hes stopped playing (Whoops, the /stop command worked wonderfully on him, and I was able to release my hostage.)

Bestine really ticks me off because it's Buff-Bot Du Jour on my server with several buff-bots often times taking up residence at once. THe ones who really tick me off are the ones who spam "Please tip me for my time!." Dyargh.

I don't care if "this fight has been fought and won already." It seems that there are enough people here who are willing to continue that fight. If indeed our energy is truly "boundless" then we have more than enough reason to fight for this casue as well as others.

Perhaps the devs will see it our way, perhaps not. Why should that stop us from fighting for waht we believe is right for our profession?

A couple of points:

1) Pex came onto the entertainer forum and apologized and said it was not intended to reward players for afk play.

2) I was told of an instance where a CSR did come out and say it was griefing to do this to a buffbot, however, eventually let the entertainer off and suggested to the buffbot that if they didn't want to be grouped then they should remove the /join from their macro. (I know the person who told me this reads the boards, but I won't mention any names--but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on some of the details here)

3) The devs have time and time again, including in the most recent Stratics dev chat said they do not like what afk has done to the game.

What am I getting at here? First, CSR's don't know what they're doing half the time. Just because a CSR comes down on the side of a buffbot or even rewards them a badge, it has been clearly shown that a CSR's decisions are not always supported by the development or management staff. If a CSR gets on my case for griefing a buffbot, I will consider that to be the CSR's own personal bias in favor of buffbots. I will not consider it a rule unless a dev staff comes out and says that it is considered griefing. Secondly, it's fairly obvious that the devs do not like what is going on, they are just having a problem fixing it and still placating all of the people who use afk. And, finally, this issue is not over. And, I refuse to give up. I'm sure you'd love for us to believe this issue is over. But, I assure you, this "war" has finally gotten to a point where it's actually happening. It's only just begun. As long as I'm playing this game, and as long as many of the real entertainers are still playing this game, and as long as buffbots are still taking away all of our viability, we will continue to fight about it. So, if you're really tired of hearing about it, well, then I suggest that you help us get rid of the buffbots. Because, I assure you, that is the only way you will ever stop hearing about it.

PS. I have not personally done any of these things to a buffbot. However, I agree with Goldy. If I am ever banned because I do decide to "grief" a buffbot, Sony can kiss my money goodbye. That will be the last straw. If someone clearly states, by banning me, that a buffbot is more important than me? Bye bye. I'm outta here. Until then, I will continue to fight the good fight,.

Talk about a tempting idea! Shi is right though. They'll just start using the timer in their macro.

I have to be honest though, since I'm a combat prof too, I face the possiblity of being greifed myself. If I don't want it done to me then I can't do it to others. Not that I support buffbots at all. I don't.

The idea is very tempting but I can't do something to others that I don't want done to me. I'm sorry.
