Thread: what will you be playing instead?

they take away the star system on the forums, they remove our professions viability (sure it gets rid of buffbots, but its getting rid of the rest of us as well it seems), they promise us a "revamp" but who the hell knows what that means. my question is; when you hit the cancel button, what game will you be hitting the "i accept" button on?

for me it was going to be Wish, but that project got canceled about 9 days into the second beta. EQ2, matrix online, guild wars, and lineage most likely won't be getting my money. leaving me with WoW and city of heros as all i can think of. decisions decisions.....

I'm not going anywhere in the forseeable future. (And I love the lack of star ratings here.) If I do leave, I'm probably going back to EQ2.

it was going to be Wish for me too. My friends were artists and storyline designers on that (RL friends too, not some nameless people online) Mutable Realms worked them into the ground (they basically had to SLEEP at the office to meet the deadlines) Then they just yoinked it and they were all laid off.

I have no idea where I'd go. But it's not looking to well for me to stick around here

For now I have no intention of leaving - although admittedly, since the CU details were announced, it's not as unthinkable to me as it used to be

And yes, I have even started to think about what other games I'd like to play instead. I tried EQ2 for a few months, but it just isn't my thing. I just don't like this rigid class and levelling system, I want the freedom to take my char where I want, and also to change my mind about it

For the same reason I can't see myself playing WoW, although maybe I will try that out some day, when I get REALLY bored (fat chance of that, hehe).

I took a look at the Middle Earth Online site on the weekend... not much is known about it yet, but they are targetting a 2005 release... that would be the one other fantasy world of my youth apart from Star Wars that I have always wanted to be a part of, so I will definitely keep an eye on that one.

Well, Iplay on the "game that shall not be named" (WoW) already with friends from SWG on two different servers. It's nothing like Galaxies, but the differences make it interesting in and of itself. Despite all the problems and neglect our profession experiences, I hate the idea of leaving SWG and the "grand experiment"so I'll probably hold out as long as I can (or until my closest friends here are ready to give up, too).

i've been dying to know more of why it got so abruptly canceled, the details on their site were more sketchy than information about the entertainer revamp. if you've got some info that can be shared, please pm me to let me know. it's been bugging me since january.

OHH! I didn't know Wish was dropped! I have periodically been watching Freeworld, Wish and Dark and Light. Guess I better keep a closer eye on them....

I played COH from beta until this month, when I cancelled my account. It is probably a viable short-term solution if you want to change games, but certainly not a long one, and definitely is not for a social gamer. The only thing there is to do in the game is combat, and combat is very 'arcade' like, meaning you can never take your hands off the keys to say anything in group chat other than to quickly type 'run!' or something (and most people just hotkey that). So if you liked Dancer for the social aspect COH will not fulfill that need.

I will say its combat system is pretty well done and the special effects are great. The lower to mid levels are fun enough. It just gets really, really repetitive after about level thirty. Still unless you use an exploit or are one of these people who plays 72 hours straight on a 3-day weekend or something, it may take you months to get to level 30 (took 3 or 4 months on my first character as I recall), and up to that point the game is still reasonably fun, and you haven't seen it all yet. After that the content is completely repetitive (they just re-name the villains and basically make you keep doing the same missions over and over). So COH is a viable solution short term but (IMO) not long-term. I played it from about November last year until now because my other friends (from RL) were in it and refused to quit. They still like it and would probably not agree that it is boring in the upper levels. On the other hand they are acheiver sorts who really love levelling and getting new powers and the like, and watching that XP bar move -- that's the sort that COH seems to attract and keep. People looking for any sort of social setting, variety, or anything other than combat and XP grinding, are not going to like it.

Can't say anything about WOW as I have not tried it, but I have heard mostly good things about it, and almost everyone in my COH guild who left COH, left for WOW because the game had more depth to it than COH, which is 1-dimensional.

The other game some of us are looking into is D and D online (DDO). I know, D and D... not a great game system as a basis (IMO, at least). However, at least so far, the devs seem to be insisting all XP will be quest (not killing) based, which means the game may be less "grindy" than most other sorts of games. It's due out in late summer or early fall, and you might want to check it out. At this point, a viable option might be, COH till you get sick of it, then switch to DDO just as you get bored.

Myself, I am likely not leaving SWG any time soon. I might drop one of my 2 accounts, and make my remaining character be the non-entertainer one (though that would be very hard to do, as I love Dejah, the entertainer toon). But I have too many friends in my guild to quit entirely. On the other hand if it starts getting like COH does (where I log in just for the guild and don't like any other elements of the game) I might leave... but somehow I doubt it will get like that, whatever happens.

C
