I am just as pro ATK as the next guy. I am ATK quite a bit. But, there are times during our stints n Theed cantina where I have to g to the bathroom. 3 minutes at the most. What I hate is coming back and being badmouthed by another dancer saying in spacial, mind you, that I was another group leader gone afk and was useless.
So please listen if this is happening to you, or your doing this to others.
We dancers and musicians have certain bodily functions called going to the bathroom. If you try to get an invite and I don't respond in the first minute you asked, it's not that I'm afk. I'm on the crapper!
Maybe it's just me but lately at my cantina, there are some ATK nazi's out who do role call constantly to see who is up and those that arn't get the sharp end of her tongue. God forbid if we are slow in response.
Enough blathering....leave the afk'ers alone. Becuase your crusade against afk'er is now taking over into the players who are atk but with lives to lead. Leaving the keyboard for five minutes to get a drink, answer a door, hug their kid. No, AFK over and over again is too far. But please, for some of you, give is poor working Joe's a break. We're ATK as much as humanely possible.
Love you all!

Sadly this happens a lot. There really is a difference between afk and "afk". What you did is what afk was originally intended for...when you have to step away for whatever reason. The problem is it can be hard to tell sometimes and sadly some people have become bitter enough over the afk macrotainer situation(and justifiably so) that they no longer give people the benefit of the doubt.
Some might argue that you could just stop dancing and sit down when you have to go afk. I do that if I know I'm going to be gone for awhile. But, Ipersonally have never seen any harm in someone going afk for 10ish minutes or so. I just give them the benefit of the doubt, send them a *wave* via tell. Then just wait and see if they respond after a bit.
Unfortunately this is something that has become a regular aspect of entertainer, and I'm sad that AFKing has become so abused that this happens.

/kudos!
If it's an anticipated 5 minute break, I issue a /group statement to let 'em know I'm going to be away for x amount of time. If it's an emergency break (ie doorbell, monsoon, flash flood, volcano, etc.) I expect everyone to just sit tight for a couple seconds.
I have quite a few friends who cannot type to save their lives! So I usually give people awhile to respond to my request.

I've had people start talking about me while I was ATK, had seen their request, and was working on inviting them. O.o
People just want to be invited to groups, like, instantly... plenty of AFKers throw these tantrums too. It always cracks me up when someone freaks out thinking I might be AFK and won't invite them and then when I do, they go AFK two secs after joining group. People are silly.

Of course we all have to step away at times, it’s only natural.
And I do agree if someone says “afk a sec” or whatever they should be given the benefit of the doubt and not automatically be accused of zombie-doom (is that a word?:-p). That's just plain wrong.
Usually if I need to go afk I do /sit down unless I’m /bandflowing and don’t want to spoil the fun for others /flowing with me but then I run like hell to get back:-p
I also find it helpful when I /sit down for afk to modify my afk message to “afk-grabbing a snack” or something like that, so if someone does send me a /tell during that time they kind of get the idea of the expected length of my afk.
But then, it’s just my opinion

If I have to step away for even just a minute, I sit down. It eliminates so many problems. If I'm the leader, I get someone else to take leader while I run to the bathroom or to kill the kitten. I never come back to find any unpleasant surprises and my clients never feel like they're being ignored.

With the new Jedi system, there will always be afk entertainers. I am guilty of this however, I do place my toon away from the center of the cantina. I do put afk over my head. I have an afk message that lets people know what I am doing. If I do not have afk over my head....I'm there.
My only real complaint is when players demand my attention. Instant gratification...bah. Like most other entertainers, I am lining up a buff que, saying thanks in tells, trying to keep up with group and any questions/training they may have, Peeking at system messages (which I take out of spatial and drag in it's own chat block to another location) to see if a buff has finished, running real entertainer macro's such as singing, keeping tabs on guild chat, chatting to my friends AND entertaining the room in spatial.
Paitence padawans.....

Well, I usually just sit down myself... my point was though, this doesn't really have anything to do with the person who is freaking out about waiting being an anti-AFK person or not.

... oh, and uh, poor kitty! Isn't it bad enough that you scare her and make her run out of the room half the time? heh

Part of the problem is you just get jaded and tired of asking over and over for an invite.
You go into Theed and ask, and ask, and ask... nothing after aseveral mintues. No sign of life anywhere. So you go to Coronet and ask and ask and ask... nothing... no sign of life. So you try Bestine, 3 AFKers. Back to Theed to ask and ask some more? No, now I'm ready to kill something.
All I have left to get is healing xp, and I need to get into those big groups (unless someone has a better suggestion). My tolerance level for asking for an invite and getting SOME kind of response has greatly dwindled. It gets hard to not shout out "if there's anyone actually alive in here, can they tell me if there's a hope of getting an invite?"
And even worse, it has me to the point where I don't even feel likedancing most nights on Eclipse and getting my last box for Master, because I just don't feel like fighting to try and get an invite to dance with the zombies. (Fortunately, Sunrunner is a much better entertainer experience than Eclipse.)
Sorry about the vent, but I'm just so frustrated with trying to be a dancer on Eclipse, that I'm ready to give up (again... I dropped it once already when the AFKing went nova) with only one box to go.
Perhaps I should post only after I've got coffee in my system. lol

Not to turn this into a thread that should go int he All Purpose Sticky or anything (and not to direct any angst at the poster I'm quoting, this isn't a comment directed at you) but..
This line amuses me greatly. Wasn't the end of the hologrind supposed to end all the problems we have with AFKers?
And the subject on hand is, IMO, just one more thing that ticks me off about the situation. I'm like Esharra -- I sit down if I know I'm gonna be away for more than a minute or two...but I hate the fact that the lines are drawn so sharply now that we can't go pee without being suspicious. 5 minutes? 10 minutes? Maybe even a half hour to eat a quick dinner? In a "normal" world without long-term AFK I wouldn't begrudge that at all. But once you get up to over an hour and into overnight that just ruins it for all the normal sensible people.
What is also rather amusing is that the people who I usually see getting so angry over stuff like the original topic are the ones who are going to go AFK themselves. Those just want to get AFK ASAP and resent that you're not there to get them in the group so they can leave. I've seen live ents get frustrated over AFK leaders (and "AFK" leaders) as well but I haven't seen them get nearly as nasty over it.
Ah well,
