Today I managed to tame my first Rancor, whom I have named Janet Reno. ... Yeah, anyways, I go to Theed Cantina to hang out with my new pet, a thing that normally isn't too uncommon for me, I usually pull out my newest tame at the Cantina to show it off. Anyways, I go there and have this little CL 5 Rancor standing there inside, and after awhile, I suddenly get some guy complaining about it, saying its going to lag the cantina. Well, me and my friends try explaining to the guy how little the pet takes up of memory, seeing as how its just sitting there. Those AFK Entertainers right next to you are more Lag causers that this little guy. Well, the guy gets his fellow ents to remove me from their service lists. Now, you think thats going to make me store the pet? Hell no. I had him sit there and just piss them off as I tried explaining how their AFK Ents and action performing droids were much greater lag causers.

I mentioned to them that "Hey, its just a little rancor. Imagine if I had brought in my Ravenous Torton in and sat him in here" (whcih I might add that on several slow nights I have done, I'll pet it into laying down in back serving as an attraction, a thing I do with my pets alot.)

One guy jokes "We dont' care if you bring a Torton in here, just the Ranc". Just to piss the obviously joking guy off, I pulled the Torton in and parked him in back like I usualyl do, to the complaints of the peanut gallery again. I stored it of course because it was just to make the guy's sarcastic point, but I come back in with the small man-sized Rancor again and park him in there with me while I fool around in GU.

Does a pet, especially a small one, cause so much lag? In Coronet I got complaints about having my Ravenous Torton out, to which I replied "When your in the wild, do you suddenly bug up and crash because you get surrounded and attacked by much more active creatures this big in groups of 16? DOes your system even slow down?" To which one person agreed that its probabally right (and laughed at my following remark of "Hey, at least it blocks out the spam baloons a bit whcih I might add cause a hella more lag) and one mentioning how they follow different systems (true, but a large creature in the wild is alot more active then an occasionally moving up and down pet thats standing in place on stay).

Man, I hate people like that . . . the only pets I have found that actively cause noticable lag is groundshakers, and only when they are actively shaking the ground (like when people set five fambaas to patrol Coronet and such). Actually, effects cause much more lag than any pets do. For example, if you have five flaming speeders out, it will cause more lag then 20 of any pets due to the smoke effect.

Do pets cause lag? No. Here is my response from another post concerning that:

Oh, yes. Creatures causing lag is a horrible misconception. (The noise and screen shaking are valid complaints.)

A creature has: 1) Variable Size 2) Pre-Defined Type 3) Alpha Texture to apply color.

A player has: 1) Species 2) Hair 3) Hair Color 4) Skin Color 5) Multiple Facial Features 6) Body Type 7) Height 8) Clothing (Hat, Chest, Upper Arm, Lower Arm, Hands, Pants, Boots, and necklace) in hundreds of combinations 9) Clothing color 10) Weapon

I could have my entire datapad out and not cause the 'lag' that one other player does.

I might be preaching to the choir but the next time our friend encounters an ignorant person he can now inform them otherwise.

You're probably preaching to the choir here... for the longest time I couldn't figure why people thought my pets would cause lag in a quick trip to a sparsely populated bank but they never once bitched about my pets in combat with 15 other people and 10 NPCs.

... lol, anyways, I come back today and go into the CAntina wiht my Ranc again. After a bit, the same trouble causing people come abck and keep complaining. Finally, they decide to, get this, STOP ENTERTAINING TIL THE PETS ARE GONE. By now however, other people had came and brought out their own pets adn were supporting my cause, adn part of the Ent group had split off to continue enting. But by the largest group getting stopped since the leader was in charge, it got people into yelling at both sides, me adn the ents. I couldn'tjust leave with the pet since it would totally invalidate my point. They change their "Lag" point of view into "Its an eyesore" view. They say "Cantinas are for Entertainers not pets. This isn't a petting zoo". The Ranc is small and sits in a corner, it shouldn't be a problem right? Wrong. They keep denying to play or give buffs. Finally the leader of the group logs and gives lead to someone else. I at this time (having been fihgting this fight for hours) find this as a good time to go do other things (namely track down some BEs to possibly work on buying some pets from).

Bleahhhh. Whiners. Parts of my guidl came in and supported me and called them whiners, hehe. Damn Ents.

Good for you. Have them bring in a CSR and see what they say. They can only do something if it is actively disturbing gameplay; for example, if you dropped a full-sized kimo on the ent group so no one could target them. If the pet is in the back, there's nothing wrong with it.

Greetings noble Creature Handlers. I am the one to blame. Yes, I finally came to add my point of view.

As a former Handler, myself, I know the joy of showing off a new, freshly tamed pet. I was even a Bio-Engineer at the same time (still have pets available for sale if you're interested, Raw), so I was enjoying all kinds of fun with my freshly created monsters. However, if at anytime, having my pets with me was an inconvenience to others, I would store it, or command it to stay elsewhere (for growth).

I would like to make one point very clear. We were not asking for the pet to be stored. We just asked that it wait outside for it's master. Heh, at one point, I even offered to organize a pet show and combat tournament for him, if only he would display his prize outside.

You made a very good point as far as lag. The pet (when sitting as it was most of the time) does not create more lag than the average AFK entertainer (another thing we're trying to discourage from Theed), or the new, novelty effects droids. However, both of these have a place in the cantina, while the pets do not. You may find, however, that most entertainers are quickly getting over the novelty of the droids, and not using them. And they will always store it, if causing problems for somebody else. It's just courtesy.

Yes, we as entertainers, decided to strike. We are striving to clean up the image of the cantinas that has suffered horribly since the hologrind started. We decided, that if you could not do us the courtesy, the favor, to have your pet wait outside, then we simply would not play. Yes, this angered many patrons. Some, who thought we were being stuck up and stubborn, some who thought the pet had no place inside. But, just as you have the right to do what you want to do ingame (within reason), so do we. You choose to ignore our pleas to take the pet out, and we choose not to perform or buff for that duration.

Before the hologrind, the cantina was a great place to have fun. There were real people there. You got to know everyone who came through. There were certain things that were just understood about cantina ettiquite: no pets, no blaster use, no harrassment of the performers. Unfortunately, since the grind, the cantinas have become a chaotic free-for-all, which drove most professional entertainers out to private cantinas. With the approaching end of grinding, more and more professionals are moving back to the cities, and trying to restore the quality of the cantina. We're striving to make themplaces where you can always find a live healer, a buffer (both sets), a friend, an enjoyable time. We just ask for your cooperation, so that we may continue to provide this service to YOU, our patrons.

Thank you for your time.

Well - here's my knowledge of lag.

Its the structures and only the structures, that is the buildings in the Cities that causes the lag. It takes so long to draw the stupid muti-story buildings inthe cities, most of which I might add are useless as they have no function. Players of course add to it because of the numbers, but you only lag while they are being drawn, a once only process, and once drawn no longer cause lag.

In cantinas, especially in coronet walking through the door causes lots of lag, but once all the players are drawn you can move freely again, also when leaving there is lag as the surrounding buildings are redrawn.

I hope this helps in the anti-ch bickering arguement.

Look, as I said in here, there is no rule (or even ettiquette) that I have heard stating "Thou shalt not bringeth yon pet(eth) into yon said staticeth cantina, for(eth) is noteth in the right."

You act as if you are in charge of the cantina, a STATIC cantina at that. I had heard not a person complain before you guys. You claim you are "bringing up standards", but the thing is, standards don't always hold the same. I plan on bringing a pet with me every time I go into a Cantina, and will do so despite if a few people complain. In fact, I've had more people support my stance that I have of people complaining. You say "Just keep it outside! Cantinas are no place for Pets!" characterizing it to real life. How many people do you see in real life walking into a cantina wearing a suit of armor or carrying a huge gawking blaster rifle. In fact, I've seen more people bring pets into drinking establishments than i have seen people bring in suits of armor or blaster rifles. I havent' exactly seen that many exotic dancers in my local bars either, not in any of the non grunge ones at least.

Fact of the matter is, this is the Star Wars universe. If you really wanted to keep things in character, you wouldn't even be complaining about the Rancor, in fear that it'd start mauling you on command, if you wanted to keep it COMPLETELY in character. I think if the game physics were to follow Star Wars more, no one would really be messing with a person badass enough to tame a pet rancor and tote it round with him. Some people wouldn't pay it no mind I bet after time, just like a person would pay no mind to a dog after a time if its well behaved.

When I think of Cantinas in Star Wars, since we only really saw a few in the movies and some others in novelia, we have seen that in many of the cantinas people had certain "protection", such as some people had escorts of say Gammorean bodyguards. Many people get tired however of the Gamorreans' blind stupidity, and could consider having a pet capable of some of the same and having a greater fear-inducing factor a good thing.

And if you think my Rancor is too impossing to you and your entertainers, I can name him Fluffy or a more pet-ish name than "Janet Reno".

Day three... lol. I wasn't going to come back to the Cantina. Was tired of it. However, one of the supporters of the opposing ents came to the city I lived in (a faction farming city) and killed an overt noob guildy of mine over it. Now, that kinda got me to go back into it. So I just ended another hour or two of their arguements and their refusing to play, saying it messes up the "atmosphere of the Cantina" and characterized it "bringing a horse into a bar". Perhaps that last anology is true, but whatever. Many people bring pets to eating establishments that have no rules against it, and if its sitting out the way (was in the back of the Cantina now), why complain? Many of them claimed that I was griefing and that I was the problem. But its a matter of a few Ent's preference versus the preference of other people (guildlies and other people liking pets). And I side with the latter.\

Some threatened to report to me, though they are technically griefing just as much as I. I also offered them to go onto the forums and deal with it in this thread, but they refused to that. I left there today, but I plan on coming back until my Rancor is full grown.
